Chapter 6: The Truth Rachel Left Behind

Daniel didn’t read the letter immediately.

He couldn’t.

The words on the page felt like they belonged to another life.

A life before the wedding.

Before Claire.

Before the ballroom.

Before he discovered that every person he trusted had been carrying pieces of a story he was never allowed to hear.

He walked out.

Nobody stopped him.

For the first time that night, nobody told him what to do.

Outside the venue, rain fell softly.

The same rain that had covered his mother when she arrived.

Daniel stood beneath the entrance lights.

A few minutes later, Ethan stepped outside.

“I thought you might need air.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“Is that what brothers do?””

Ethan looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

The honesty surprised Daniel.

“Neither do I.””

They stood there silently.

Two strangers connected by a woman who was gone.

Finally, Daniel spoke.

“Did you hate me?””

Ethan looked shocked.

“What?””

“When Rachel chose me.””

Ethan shook his head.

“No.””

“Why not?””

“Because you were a child.””

Daniel looked away.

“I still got the mother.””

Ethan’s expression softened.

“You got someone who loved you.””

Daniel swallowed.

“And you didn’t?””

Ethan looked toward the rain.

“I got Rachel.””

The sadness in his voice was obvious.

“She wasn’t perfect.””

Daniel listened.

“But she loved us both.””

The door opened.

Daniel’s mother stepped outside.

She held a coat around her shoulders.

“Can I talk to you?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

But he didn’t leave.

She stood in front of him.

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

“I was afraid.””

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“I know that doesn’t fix anything.””

“No.””

Her eyes filled.

“But I need you to know something.””

Daniel waited.

“I never once thought you weren’t my son.””

The sentence broke something inside him.

Because that was the question he hadn’t wanted to admit he had.

If the truth changed everything.

If blood mattered more.

If the woman who raised him was suddenly a stranger.

His mother touched her chest.

“You were mine from the moment I held you.””

Daniel looked down.

“Then why hide it?””

“Because Rachel came back.””

He looked up.

“She came back angry.””

“Because of you?””

“Because of what happened.””

His mother took a breath.

“She believed someone had kept her away from you.””

Daniel looked toward the building.

“Evelyn.””

She nodded.

“She thought Evelyn had poisoned everyone against her.””

“Was she right?””

His mother didn’t answer immediately.

That was enough.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Inside the venue, his entire life was being rearranged.

His mother continued.

“Rachel wanted to tell you herself.””

“When?””

“Ten years ago.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Why didn’t she?””

His mother’s voice became quieter.

“Because she died before she could.””

The rain seemed louder.

Daniel stared.

“What happened?””

His mother looked toward Ethan.

Then back at him.

“Rachel was on her way to meet you.””

Daniel felt his stomach drop.

“She knew where I lived?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t she come?””

His mother looked devastated.

“Because someone stopped her.””

The answer came before the name.

But Daniel needed to hear it.

“Who?””

His mother looked toward the ballroom.

“Evelyn.””

Daniel walked back inside.

Not running.

Not angry.

Calm.

The kind of calm that came when someone finally stopped being confused.

Everyone was still there.

Claire.

Evelyn.

The guests who had stayed.

Daniel approached Evelyn.

She looked at him.

“I can explain.””

“No.””

Her mouth closed.

“No more explanations.””

Daniel held up Rachel’s letter.

“Did you know about this?””

Evelyn looked at it.

Her face changed.

Just slightly.

But Daniel saw.

“You knew.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“From losing your mother.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You already made sure I lost her.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

His voice echoed.

“You didn’t protect me.””

He stepped closer.

“You controlled me.””

Evelyn started crying.

“I loved you.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“And that’s why this hurts.””

The room was silent.

He looked at Claire.

Then at his mother.

Then at Ethan.

Everyone had hurt him differently.

But only one person had spent years deciding what truth he was allowed to have.

Daniel opened Rachel’s letter.

Finally.

The first paragraph was short.

Daniel,

I need you to know something before you hear anything else.

I never left because I didn’t love you.

Daniel’s vision blurred.

He kept reading.

I left because someone convinced me that the people protecting you believed I was dangerous. I believed them. I thought staying would destroy your life.

His hands trembled.

Then came the line that made him stop.

The person who kept me away from you wasn’t your adoptive mother.

It wasn’t your father.

It was someone who wanted you to belong to her.

Daniel slowly lifted his eyes.

Evelyn looked terrified.

Because she knew.

The letter continued.

And if you are reading this, then you need to know the final truth.

The truth about why she did it.

Daniel turned the page.

But there was no next sentence.

Only a torn edge.

A missing piece.

He looked at his mother.

“What happened to the rest?””

She looked horrified.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

And for the first time, she looked like someone who had nowhere left to hide.

Then Ethan’s phone rang.

He checked the screen.

His face changed.

“Daniel.””

“What?””

Ethan slowly turned the phone around.

A message appeared.

From an unknown number.

May you like

One sentence.

*Stop looking for the missing page, or you’ll learn why Rachel really died.*
