Chapter 3: The Secret My Mother Buried

The photograph felt heavier than paper.

Daniel stared at the woman standing beside his younger self.

She had one hand on his shoulder.

A smile on her face.

A smile that looked natural.

Like someone who belonged there.

“Mom,” Daniel whispered.

His mother looked away.

That was the answer.

Not the kind he wanted.

The kind that opened a door he didn’t know existed.

“Who is she?””

Nobody moved.

The entire ballroom waited.

His mother took a shaky breath.

“Her name was Rachel.””

Daniel frowned.

“Was?””

His mother nodded.

“She passed away.””

“When?””

“Years ago.””

“Why have I never heard of her?””

His mother looked at the floor.

“Because I never wanted you to.””

The words cut through him.

Daniel stepped back.

“You never wanted me to know someone existed?””

“It wasn’t like that.””

“Then what was it like?””

His mother’s eyes filled.

“I was scared.””

“Everyone keeps saying that tonight.””

He looked around.

Everyone had an excuse.

Everyone had fear.

Everyone had a reason.

But somehow, Daniel was the one standing in the middle of the damage.

His father moved beside his mother.

“Daniel, your mother made mistakes.””

Daniel looked at him.

“But she wasn’t the one who sent those messages.””

Silence.

A painful silence.

His father was right.

Daniel looked back at Claire.

“Did you know about Rachel?””

Claire hesitated.

Only for a second.

But Daniel noticed.

“You did.””

Claire’s voice was quiet.

“I knew there was something your mother wasn’t telling you.””

“How?””

“Evelyn told me.””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

The woman who had spent years sitting at his family’s dinner table.

The woman who knew every secret.

“Why?””

Evelyn looked exhausted.

“Because your mother wasn’t honest with you.””

Daniel shook his head.

“So you decided to destroy her relationship with me?””

“No.””

“You made me believe my own mother didn’t care about me.””

“I was trying to stop you from making a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Marrying someone without knowing the truth.””

Daniel felt cold.

The room disappeared.

All he could hear was his heartbeat.

“What truth?””

His mother stepped forward.

“Daniel, please.””

“No.””

He looked at her.

“Not anymore.””

The woman who had raised him.

The woman who had protected him.

The woman he had always believed had no secrets.

“Tell me.””

She closed her eyes.

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

“Rachel was your biological mother.””

The room went silent.

Daniel couldn’t understand the words.

They reached his ears.

But they didn’t make sense.

“No.””

His mother cried.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

Michael grabbed his shoulder.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

He stepped away.

“My mother is standing right there.””

His mother covered her mouth.

“I am your mother.””

“Then why did you say she was?””

Nobody answered.

Because the truth was worse than the lie.

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

The woman’s face.

The resemblance.

The reason everyone looked terrified.

His mother spoke through tears.

“Rachel gave birth to you.””

Daniel’s hands trembled.

“She couldn’t raise you.””

“Why?””

“She was sick.””

“What kind of sick?””

His mother looked at Evelyn.

And Daniel noticed the anger between them.

A history.

A war that had existed before he ever knew there was a battle.

“She struggled with addiction,” his mother finally said.

Daniel looked down.

“And you adopted me?””

“Yes.””

“Then why hide it?””

His mother cried harder.

“Because when I held you for the first time, you were just a baby. You needed someone. Rachel needed help. I thought I could give you both a better life.””

Daniel swallowed.

“But you lied.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

More than denial would have.

Claire stepped forward.

“Daniel…”

He looked at her.

“You knew my entire life was built on a secret.””

“I knew something was wrong.””

“And you used it.””

Her face changed.

“I didn’t mean to hurt you.””

“But you did.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“There’s more.””

Daniel turned.

“Of course there is.””

She looked at Claire.

Then at his mother.

“Rachel didn’t just disappear.””

His mother went pale.

“Evelyn.””

“What?””

Daniel looked between them.

“What happened to her?””

Nobody spoke.

Then his mother whispered:

“She came back.””

The room seemed to freeze.

“When?””

“Ten years ago.””

Daniel stared.

“Ten years ago?””

His mother nodded.

“She wanted to see you.””

“And you stopped her?””

His mother began crying.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

Daniel looked at her.

“How?””

His mother’s voice broke.

“Because she didn’t come alone.””

A cold silence filled the ballroom.

Daniel felt every person waiting.

Every person knowing something he didn’t.

“Who was with her?””

His mother looked toward the entrance.

At the doors where she had arrived only minutes earlier.

Then she whispered:

“Your brother.””

Daniel stopped breathing.

“My what?””

Before anyone could answer, the ballroom doors opened.

A man stood outside.

Older than Daniel.

Same eyes.

Same expression.

Holding an envelope.

He looked directly at Daniel.

“I think it’s time you knew why your mother tried so hard to erase me.””

And on the front of the envelope was a name Daniel had never seen before.

May you like

His own last name.

But with a different first name written beside it.
