Chapter 2: The Friend Who Knew Too Much
The ballroom suddenly felt smaller.
Daniel had known Evelyn Brooks since he was six years old.
She was the woman who brought him birthday cakes when his mother worked double shifts.
The woman who sat beside his mother during every family emergency.
The woman who called him “her second son.””
And now her name was glowing on Claire’s phone.
Claire immediately turned the screen facedown.
A mistake.
A tiny mistake.
But Daniel saw it.
“You knew she was involved,” he said.
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
“Then why did you hide the phone?””
“Because everyone is looking at me like I’m guilty.””
Daniel laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“Claire, my mother is standing in a ruined dress because someone convinced her own son didn’t want her at his wedding.””
“I didn’t do that.””
“Then who did?””
Claire looked around.
For a moment, Daniel saw something he had never seen before.
A crack.
The perfect woman he thought he knew suddenly looked exhausted.
“Can we talk somewhere private?””
Daniel stared at her.
“Private?””
“Yes.””
“You wanted my mother to stay away privately too?””
The guests looked uncomfortable.
The photographer lowered his camera.
The musicians stopped pretending they were waiting.
Claire’s father stepped forward.
“Daniel, you’re emotional.””
Daniel looked at him.
“My mother was emotionally destroyed.””
“That’s not what happened.””
“Then tell me what happened.””
Nobody answered.
Daniel walked toward his mother.
She looked terrified.
“Mom.””
She wiped her face.
“I’m sorry.””
He shook his head.
“Stop apologizing.””
“I should have fought harder.””
“For what?””
“For you.””
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
“You thought I would believe those messages?””
She didn’t answer.
And that silence hurt.
Because deep down, she had.
His mother had spent three weeks believing her son hated having her around.
Daniel turned back toward Claire.
“When did you start talking to Evelyn?””
Claire crossed her arms.
“I didn’t.””
“Your phone says otherwise.””
“She called me.””
“Why?””
Claire looked away.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Why?””
Before she could answer, Evelyn’s voice came from behind the crowd.
“I think I should explain.””
Everyone turned.
Evelyn stood near the entrance.
She wasn’t wearing a coat despite the cold.
Her face was pale.
Daniel felt something inside him collapse.
Because for one second, he hoped she would laugh.
He hoped she would say this was a misunderstanding.
But Evelyn didn’t look surprised.
She looked caught.
“Evelyn,” Daniel said quietly.
She walked forward.
“Daniel, I never wanted it to become this.””
His father stared at her.
“You never wanted him to find out.””
“That’s not fair.””
Michael stepped closer.
“Fair?””
His voice shook.
“You destroyed my wife.””
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
“I was trying to protect someone.””
Daniel looked at Claire.
The answer was obvious.
But he needed to hear it.
“Protect who?””
Evelyn looked at Claire.
Then back at him.
“Your future.””
Daniel felt a chill.
“What does that mean?””
Claire interrupted.
“Evelyn, stop.””
That was the first time Daniel heard panic in Claire’s voice.
Not sadness.
Not confusion.
Panic.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“She was afraid your mother would ruin everything.””
Daniel stared.
“My mother?””
“She thought your mother would always come first.””
The words hit him.
Daniel turned slowly toward Claire.
“Is that true?””
Claire didn’t answer.
And that was enough.
“You were jealous of my mother?””
“No.””
“You pushed her away because you thought she was a problem?””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
“That I would never be enough.””
For a moment, Daniel saw the woman he had fallen in love with.
The insecure girl who told him she was afraid of losing him.
The woman who cried during their first anniversary because she thought she wasn’t special enough.
But then he remembered the messages.
The lies.
The pain.
“You could have told me that.””
“I tried.””
“No, you didn’t.””
Claire looked at him.
“You always chose her.””
Daniel froze.
The sentence revealed more than she intended.
Because Daniel realized something.
This was never about the wedding.
It started long before.
Evelyn walked closer.
“There’s something else you need to know.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
She hesitated.
Then she reached into her bag.
She pulled out an old photograph.
A photograph of Daniel as a child.
With his mother.
And another woman standing beside them.
A woman Daniel didn’t recognize.
Evelyn handed it to him.
“Your mother never told you about her.””
Daniel looked at the picture.
“Who is she?””
Evelyn’s face changed.
“She’s the reason your mother spent twenty-five years afraid of losing you.””
Daniel stared at the photograph.
The woman in it looked familiar.
Too familiar.
Then his mother gasped.
“Where did you get that?””
Everyone turned.
May you like
Daniel looked at his mother.
And for the first time that night, his mother looked afraid of something bigger than the wedding.
