Chapter 9: The Woman Behind Every Lie

Nora looked different.

Not physically.

Her clothes were the same.

Her face was the same.

But the mask was gone.

For seven years, I had seen a woman who acted like she belonged in my home.

Now I saw someone who believed she owned it.

“You.””

Sarah’s voice shook with rage.

Nora smiled.

“Hello, Sarah.””

Emma stood frozen beside her.

I noticed something immediately.

The girl wasn’t afraid of Nora.

She was afraid of what would happen if she left.

That was different.

“Nora,” I said.

She looked at me.

“Yes, Ethan?””

“Let her go.””

She tilted her head.

“You think this is simple?””

“She’s a child.””

“So is Lily.””

My expression hardened.

“Don’t compare them.””

Nora laughed.

“You still don’t understand.””

She looked at the two girls.

“I saved them.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“You destroyed them.””

“No.””

Nora’s voice sharpened.

“I protected them from a world that wanted to use them.””

The irony was almost unbearable.

“You kidnapped them.””

“I kept them alive.””

“You poisoned me.””

A pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

Sarah looked horrified.

Nora didn’t deny it.

“I needed time.””

“You tried to kill him,” Sarah whispered.

Nora looked at me.

“I needed Ethan gone.””

Lily moved closer to me.

Nora noticed.

And for a second, sadness crossed her face.

“I loved you.””

I almost laughed.

“No.””

“I did.””

“You loved what I represented.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You don’t know anything about me.””

“You spent seven years lying.””

“And you spent seven years replacing me.””

The words surprised me.

“What?””

Nora’s voice broke.

“Every day I was there.””

“I was there when Sarah died.””

“She didn’t die.””

“I didn’t know that!””

The scream echoed through the room.

For the first time, Nora looked human.

“I was alone too.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Emma whispered:

“Nora.””

Everyone looked at her.

The girl stepped forward.

“She told me Mommy was coming back.””

Sarah started crying.

“She used you.””

Emma nodded.

“She said if I was good, she would bring you home.””

Nora’s face changed.

“Emma.””

The girl shook her head.

“No.””

A small word.

But powerful.

“No more.””

Nora stared at her.

The child she had controlled for years had finally spoken.

I moved toward Emma.

“She won’t hurt you.””

Nora suddenly pulled something from her pocket.

A small device.

Everyone froze.

“What is that?”” Sarah asked.

Nora smiled.

“The reason you all came here.””

The mansion lights flickered.

Then screens across the room turned on.

A video appeared.

My father.

Older.

Sitting in an office.

I stopped breathing.

“Ethan.””

My father’s voice filled the room.

“If you are seeing this, then something went wrong.””

I stared.

Impossible.

The recording continued.

“I made mistakes.””

The video showed files.

Medical reports.

Photographs.

Children’s records.

“My research was meant to protect our family.””

I felt sick.

“Protect?””

My father looked directly into the camera.

“But people always corrupt what they cannot control.””

The screen changed.

A document appeared.

A name.

A signature.

My father’s.

And underneath it…

A second signature.

Nora’s.

Sarah whispered:

“No.””

Nora smiled.

“You wanted the truth?””

She looked at me.

“Your family started this.””

I stared at the screen.

At my father’s signature.

At the evidence.

At the impossible reality.

Then the video reached the final line.

My father’s voice became quiet.

“The child who carries the Blackwood bloodline must never know the truth.””

The screen went black.

Nobody moved.

Then Nora whispered:

“Now you understand.””

I looked at my daughters.

At Sarah.

At the family I had lost and somehow found again.

And I realized the final secret wasn’t who had betrayed me.

It was why.

Because my father hadn’t been trying to protect the family.

He had been protecting a crime.

And somewhere inside that mansion…

The last piece of the truth was waiting.
