Chapter 4: The Daughter They Wanted To Erase
For three seconds, nobody moved.
The storm outside screamed against the windows, but inside the farmhouse, there was only silence.
Nora stood behind Lily with one hand resting lightly on the child’s shoulder.
A gesture that looked protective.
But I knew better now.
Everything about Nora was a performance.
“Move away from my daughter,” I said.
My voice was calm.
Too calm.
Daniel smiled from the staircase.
“There he is.””
I looked at him.
“The brother who spent seven years pretending to mourn with me.””
His smile faded slightly.
“You always were dramatic, Ethan.””
“Dramatic?””
I stepped forward.
“You helped erase my wife. You helped steal my child. You watched me bury an empty grave.””
Daniel sighed.
“You make it sound so cruel.””
My hands curled into fists.
“Because it was.””
He walked down the stairs slowly, completely relaxed.
That was the worst part.
He wasn’t afraid.
Not of me.
Not of the police.
Not of what he had done.
“You built Blackwood Industries because you thought you were smarter than everyone else,” Daniel said.
“You thought numbers and contracts made you untouchable.””
Sarah moved closer to me.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Daniel laughed.
“Still protecting him after everything?””
Sarah’s eyes hardened.
“You destroyed our family.””
“No,” Daniel replied.
“I saved myself.””
The words landed heavily.
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel stopped.
For the first time, something ugly appeared in his eyes.
Jealousy.
“You inherited everything.””
I almost laughed.
“That’s what this was about?””
“You had Dad’s approval. You had the company. You had Sarah. You had a child.””
He pointed toward Lily.
“Everything I ever wanted.””
A cold realization settled over me.
Daniel wasn’t angry because I had hurt him.
He was angry because I had something he believed belonged to him.
“You could have built your own life,” I said.
His face twisted.
“Easy for you to say.””
Nora finally spoke.
“Daniel, stop wasting time.””
I looked at her.
She sounded different.
No fear.
No panic.
Like she had been waiting for this moment.
“You always hated waiting,” I said.
She smiled.
“And you always trusted too easily.””
Lily suddenly pulled away from her.
“Daddy.””
My eyes immediately went to her.
“Are you hurt?””
She shook her head.
But she looked terrified.
“She has the letters.””
My stomach dropped.
“What letters?””
Nora’s expression changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Real fear.
Sarah saw it too.
“What letters?”” she demanded.
Lily looked between us.
“The letters Mommy wrote.””
The room became still.
Sarah whispered:
“What?””
Lily’s voice trembled.
“Nora kept them in the blue box. She said Daddy could never see them.””
I turned toward Nora.
“What letters?””
She didn’t answer.
Daniel’s face darkened.
“Nora.””
For the first time, he sounded worried.
That told me everything.
I moved toward her.
“Where are they?””
Nora stepped backward.
“You don’t understand what those letters contain.””
“Then explain.””
She laughed softly.
“They prove everything.””
Sarah went pale.
“What did you do?””
Nora looked at her.
“I protected myself.””
“You trapped me in that hospital.””
“I gave you a choice.””
Sarah’s voice broke.
“You threatened my daughter.””
Nora’s expression became cold.
“And you chose survival.””
The words cut through the room.
I looked at Sarah.
She was crying silently.
All these years.
She had been alive.
Alone.
Afraid.
While I buried her.
While Lily grew up believing she was unwanted.
A sound came from outside.
Car doors.
Multiple.
Daniel looked toward the window.
His confidence disappeared.
“What is that?””
I smiled slightly.
“Your worst mistake.””
Daniel turned.
“What did you do?””
“I knew walking into this house was a trap.””
I pulled my phone from my pocket.
The call was still connected.
Marcus had heard everything.
The police were coming.
For the first time, Daniel looked afraid.
But Nora didn’t.
She looked at Lily.
Then she whispered:
“You still don’t know why she survived.””
My blood froze.
“What did you say?””
Nora smiled.
“The fire was never supposed to kill Sarah.””
Sarah stepped back.
“What?””
Nora looked at her.
“It was supposed to kill the baby.””
My entire body went cold.
“No.””
Nora continued.
“And it almost did.””
Lily grabbed my hand.
I squeezed it.
But my eyes stayed on Nora.
“What are you talking about?””
She leaned closer.
“Ask Sarah why your daughter has no birth records.””
Sarah’s face drained of color.
I turned slowly.
“Sarah?””
She looked away.
May you like
And that scared me more than anything.
Because Sarah was hiding something too.
