Chapter 7: The Child Who Was Never Found
The photograph felt heavier than it should have.
A small piece of paper.
A frozen moment.
A truth that had been hidden from me for seven years.
Two babies.
Two lives.
One fire.
I stared at the picture until the edges blurred.
“Who took this?”” I asked.
The woman standing in front of me did not answer immediately.
Her eyes moved toward Lily.
Then toward Sarah.
Like she was measuring how much damage the truth would cause.
“Her name was Emma,” the woman finally said.
Sarah covered her mouth.
“No.””
The woman nodded slowly.
“Emma was born twelve minutes before Lily.””
My heart stopped.
Twelve minutes.
A lifetime separated by twelve minutes.
“You’re saying Sarah had twins?””
Sarah looked away.
And that was my answer.
I turned toward her.
“Sarah?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I wanted to tell you.””
The words came out broken.
“But I couldn’t.””
“Why?””
She looked at Lily.
“Because the moment I found out there were two babies, someone was already trying to take one.””
The room became silent.
The storm outside had weakened, but inside that farmhouse, everything felt like it was collapsing.
I looked at the photograph again.
The second baby was wrapped in a white blanket.
Lily was beside her.
Both tiny.
Both innocent.
“Where is Emma now?””
Nobody answered.
That frightened me more than anything.
The woman lowered her eyes.
“That is the question everyone has been trying to answer.””
I stepped closer.
“Everyone?””
She nodded.
“My name is Claire.””
I waited.
“I worked at Saint Aurelia Hospital.””
Sarah’s face changed.
“You were the nurse.””
Claire looked at her.
“Yes.””
“You disappeared.””
“I had to.””
My eyes narrowed.
“You knew?””
Claire looked at me.
“I knew enough.””
The anger rising inside me was almost impossible to control.
“Enough to let me believe my wife and child were dead?””
Claire accepted the accusation.
“I failed you.””
The honesty caught me off guard.
“But I spent seven years trying to fix what happened.””
I looked toward Lily.
“And now?””
Claire’s expression became serious.
“Now they know Lily is alive.””
“Who?””
She hesitated.
“The Blackwell Foundation.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But Sarah reacted immediately.
Her face lost all color.
“No.””
I turned.
“What is it?””
Sarah whispered:
“They were the people asking about Lily.””
Claire nodded.
“They have been searching for her since the night of the fire.””
I looked back at the photograph.
“Why?””
Claire took a breath.
“Because Emma and Lily were not ordinary children.””
I felt my patience disappear.
“Don’t tell me some mysterious story. Tell me the truth.””
Claire nodded.
“When the twins were born, doctors discovered something rare in their genetics. Something that could change medical research forever.””
Sarah closed her eyes.
“I hated that moment.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because the second people realized what they carried, they stopped seeing them as babies.””
Her voice trembled.
“They became valuable.””
I looked at Lily.
My daughter.
A child who had spent years afraid of speaking.
Afraid of being loved.
Because adults had turned her into something they could own.
I knelt beside her.
“Lily.””
She looked at me.
“Do you remember Emma?””
Her expression changed.
A small flicker of sadness appeared.
“Yes.””
Sarah froze.
“You do?””
Lily nodded.
“She was my sister.””
Nobody spoke.
My heart cracked.
“How?””
Lily looked down.
“Nora showed me pictures.””
“Pictures?””
“She said Emma was the lucky one.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Lily’s hands shook.
“She said Emma got the life I was supposed to have.””
Sarah stepped back.
“No…”
Claire whispered:
“Nora knew.””
I looked at her.
“Knew what?””
“That Lily survived.””
A terrible silence followed.
“Then why did she keep Lily?””
Claire looked toward the window.
“Because Nora wasn’t trying to destroy your family.””
She paused.
“She was trying to replace it.””
The words hit like a physical blow.
I thought about every year.
Every dinner.
Every birthday.
Every moment Nora had stood beside me pretending to care.
“She wanted Sarah’s place.””
Claire nodded.
“But she couldn’t have you while Sarah existed.””
My hands clenched.
“So she created a world where Sarah died.””
“Yes.””
“And Emma?””
Claire looked at the photograph.
“She was taken.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“By who?””
Before Claire could answer, a sound came from downstairs.
Glass breaking.
Everyone froze.
I immediately moved toward the door.
“Stay here.””
Sarah grabbed my arm.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“I lost seven years with you because people decided what I was allowed to know.””
Her eyes hardened.
“I’m not losing you again.””
For a moment, I saw the woman I married.
Not the ghost.
Not the memory.
Sarah.
Alive.
I nodded.
“Stay behind me.””
We moved downstairs.
The farmhouse was dark.
Too dark.
The front door was still locked.
The windows were closed.
But on the kitchen floor was a broken glass.
Beside it…
Was a small pink bracelet.
Lily gasped.
“That’s Emma’s.””
I looked at her.
“You’re sure?””
She nodded.
“Nora gave it to her.””
My blood ran cold.
A voice came from the hallway.
“You should stop looking for things that were buried.””
We turned.
A man stepped from the shadows.
Older.
Thin.
Wearing a black coat.
Sarah immediately recognized him.
“Dr. Caldwell.””
Claire’s face went pale.
“No.””
The man smiled.
“Hello, Claire.””
I raised my weapon.
“Who are you?””
The man looked at Lily.
Then smiled.
“I’m the reason your daughter survived.””
I tightened my grip.
“And I’m the reason you’re going to tell me everything.””
He laughed softly.
“Everything?””
His eyes moved toward the upstairs window.
“You still don’t know the worst part.””
I stared at him.
“What worst part?””
His smile disappeared.
“The child you’ve been protecting…”
May you like
He pointed toward Lily.
“…might not be the child you think she is.””
