Chapter 8: My Mother’s Final Warning
I read the letter alone.
At least, that was what I wanted.
But my brothers stayed nearby.
My father waited in silence.
And Adrian stood across the room like a man watching a storm approach.
The letter was only three pages.
Three pages that changed everything.
My mother’s handwriting was neat.
Careful.
The handwriting of someone who knew every word might be their last.
Emily,
If you are reading this, I need you to understand one thing.
I never wanted to leave you.
I stopped.
My vision blurred.
For years, I had imagined my mother’s final moments.
I imagined fear.
Pain.
Regret.
But I never imagined she was thinking about me.
I continued.
Your father will tell you he tried to protect us. Your brothers will tell you they tried to protect you. They will all be telling the truth.
But the truth is not the same as forgiveness.
My breathing slowed.
Because my mother understood.
She knew.
There is a family that will try to control your life. They believe money gives them ownership over people.
Do not let them convince you that your kindness is weakness.
I looked at Adrian.
He looked away.
The man named Adrian Vale entered our lives for a reason.
My heart stopped.
At first, I believed he was only following his family’s orders.
Then I discovered something worse.
I turned the page.
He started believing in them.
I swallowed.
That was somehow worse.
Because monsters who know they are monsters are easier to fight.
The dangerous ones believe they are right.
Emily, if Adrian ever tells you he loved you, remember this: love does not require you to disappear.
A tear fell onto the paper.
Because those words hurt.
Because they were true.
My mother had seen everything.
Even before I did.
The letter continued.
The final evidence is hidden where your father first taught you to dream.
I frowned.
Where my father first taught me to dream?
A memory surfaced.
The old greenhouse.
Behind our childhood home.
My father used to take me there when I was little.
He taught me the names of flowers.
He told me every plant needed patience.
Care.
Time.
“That’s where it is,” I whispered.
Everyone looked at me.
“What?”” Caleb asked.
I folded the letter.
“The evidence.””
Thomas stood.
“You’re sure?””
I nodded.
“My mother wouldn’t write something like that randomly.””
Marcus looked concerned.
“We can’t just walk into that property.””
“Why?””
“Because Adrian knows.””
I looked at him.
“Then we move before he does.””
Julian smiled slightly.
“That’s my sister.””
But before we could leave, Adrian spoke.
“You really think you’ve won?””
I turned.
He looked different.
The perfect businessman was gone.
The charming husband was gone.
All that remained was a desperate man.
“You’re still missing something.””
I narrowed my eyes.
“What?””
He smiled.
A small, cold smile.
“The evidence your mother left doesn’t prove what you think.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“Stop.””
Adrian ignored him.
“Your mother was investigating my family.””
“Yes.””
“She was also investigating yours.””
The room froze.
I stared.
“What?””
Adrian looked at Marcus.
Then Julian.
Then Caleb.
“Your brothers know.””
I turned slowly.
“Know what?””
Marcus looked devastated.
“Emily.””
“No.””
My voice became quiet.
“No. I’m done with that word.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“The night Mom died…”
I waited.
“She wasn’t alone.””
My stomach dropped.
“Who was with her?””
Nobody answered.
Then Caleb whispered:
“Dad.””
I felt like the floor disappeared.
“My father?””
Marcus nodded.
“Your father was there.””
I looked at Thomas.
He didn’t deny it.
My entire body went cold.
“You told me she died before you arrived.””
Thomas looked broken.
“I lied.””
The pain was immediate.
Almost physical.
“Why?””
Thomas stepped closer.
“Because your mother made me promise.””
“Promise what?””
His voice cracked.
“To keep you away from the truth until you were strong enough.””
I laughed.
A painful laugh.
“Strong enough?””
I looked around the room.
“My whole life, everyone has decided what I can survive.””
Nobody spoke.
Then my phone buzzed.
A security alert.
Julian grabbed it.
His face changed.
“What?””
“What happened?””
He looked at me.
“The old Valez property.””
My heart sank.
“What about it?””
“Someone is there.””
I stood.
“Who?””
Julian turned the screen toward me.
A live camera feed appeared.
The greenhouse.
The place my mother mentioned.
A figure walked inside.
A figure carrying a flashlight.
Then the camera zoomed in.
I stopped breathing.

Because the person searching through my mother’s hidden files…
was my mother.
