Chapter 5: The Woman They Tried to Destroy
By sunrise, my face was everywhere.
Not because I was a victim.
Not because my husband had assaulted me in front of two hundred witnesses.
Because someone had rewritten the story.
The headlines didn’t say:
*Woman Exposes Husband’s Charity Fraud.*
They said:
*Emily Valez Accused of Financial Manipulation Behind Rosewood Foundation Scandal.*
I stared at the screen in disbelief.
“They made me the villain.””
Julian stood beside me in his apartment overlooking the city.
“They were prepared.””
“Prepared?””
He nodded.
“Too prepared.””
The television continued playing.
A reporter stood outside the Rosewood Foundation building.
“Sources close to the investigation claim Emily Valez had unauthorized access to financial records and may have attempted to frame her husband.””
I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
“He’s using my own evidence against me.””
Caleb walked into the room.
“He’s not working alone.””
I looked at him.
“You found something?””
He placed a tablet on the table.
“We traced the leak.””
“And?””
“It came from inside the foundation.””
I waited.
Caleb looked uncomfortable.
“Vanessa.””
Of course.
The woman wearing my necklace.
The woman standing beside my husband while he destroyed me.
I wasn’t surprised.
But I was disappointed.
There was a difference.
“Why would she do this?””
Julian answered.
“Because Adrian promised her something.””
“What?””
“Control.””
I looked at him.
“She thinks she’s going to replace me.””
Julian nodded.
“That was probably the plan.””
I sat down.
For years, I had wondered why Vanessa never seemed jealous of me.
Why she acted so confident.
Why she looked at me like I was temporary.
Now I understood.
She wasn’t trying to steal my husband.
She was waiting for my husband to finish destroying me.
My phone rang.
Adrian.
Everyone looked at me.
I answered.
“Hello.””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Emily.””
The way he said my name used to make me feel loved.
Now it made my skin crawl.
“What do you want?””
A pause.
“I want to fix this.””
I almost smiled.
“Fix what?””
“Your mistake.””
My expression hardened.
“My mistake?””
“Emily, you don’t understand what’s happening.””
“I understand perfectly.””
“No, you don’t.””
His voice lowered.
“Someone is using you.””
I walked toward the window.
“You mean someone other than you?””
Silence.
For the first time, I heard uncertainty.
“You’re angry.””
“I should be.””
“You need to come home.””
I looked around Julian’s apartment.
Home.
That word felt strange.
Because the house I shared with Adrian wasn’t a home anymore.
It was a crime scene filled with memories.
“I’m not coming back.””
“Emily.””
“No.””
My voice became steady.
“I’m done asking permission to exist.””
Another silence.
Then Adrian said something that made me freeze.
“You should ask your brothers why they never told you what happened after your mother died.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“You know about that?””
A small pause.
Too small.
But I noticed.
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Because I was there.””
The room went silent.
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
“I didn’t want to tell you this way.””
My heart raced.
“What are you talking about?””
“Emily, your mother’s death wasn’t just connected to my family.””
My voice dropped.
“Say that again.””
“She knew me.””
“No.””
“She knew who I was.””
“No.””
“She knew what my father had done.””
I felt dizzy.
“You were a child.””
“I was nineteen.””
The world shifted.
Adrian’s voice continued.
“I saw your mother the night she died.””
I couldn’t speak.
“You’re lying.””
“Am I?””
I hung up.
Immediately.
My hands shook.
Nobody moved.
Finally, Caleb spoke.
“Emily.””
I looked at him.
“He knew.””
My brother’s expression told me everything.
“You knew he knew.””
Caleb looked away.
That was enough.
I felt betrayed all over again.
“How long?””
“Emily—”
“How long did you know Adrian was connected to Mom’s death?””
Marcus entered the room.
His face was serious.
“Since before your wedding.””
The words destroyed whatever hope I had left.
Before my wedding.
Before I promised forever.
Before I gave Adrian my trust.
They knew.
They knew and let me walk down the aisle.
“Why?””
Marcus looked devastated.
“Because we were trying to protect you.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were trying to control what I knew.””
Nobody argued.
Because they knew I was right.
A knock interrupted us.
Caleb immediately reached for his weapon.
Everyone froze.
Another knock.
Then a voice from outside.
“Emily?””
I knew that voice.
Vanessa.
Julian moved toward the door.
“Don’t open it.””
But Vanessa spoke again.
“I know you’re inside.””
My blood ran cold.
“How?””
Julian looked at the security monitor.
His face changed.
“She’s not alone.””
I walked toward the screen.
Outside the building entrance stood Vanessa.
And beside her…
Was Adrian.
But that wasn’t what shocked me.
It was the man standing behind them.
The man I had never seen before.
May you like
The man holding a folder.
The man who looked exactly like my father.
