Chapter 7: The Legacy of Lies

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Not a single person in the room moved.

My father’s words hung in the air like smoke.

*The person who destroyed our family was your own grandfather.*

I wanted to laugh.

I wanted to scream.

I wanted someone to tell me this was another cruel trick.

But nobody did.

Because the worst part about impossible truths is the moment when they start making sense.

Thomas Valez stood in front of me, alive after twelve years of being buried in my memory.

The man I had mourned.

The man I had hated for leaving me.

The man I had secretly wished would walk through the door every birthday and tell me there had been a mistake.

And now he was standing here.

With an explanation.

With more secrets.

I looked at him.

“Start from the beginning.””

My voice didn’t sound like mine.

Thomas nodded slowly.

“I will.””

He sat down.

For the first time, I noticed how tired he looked.

Not old.

Tired.

Like twelve years of running had taken something from him that he could never get back.

“My father,” Thomas said, “your grandfather, built the Valez empire.””

I frowned.

“I know.””

Everyone knew the story.

A wealthy businessman.

A powerful man.

A respected name.

The kind of person whose photograph hung in corporate offices and charity buildings.

Thomas continued.

“But what people didn’t know was how he built it.””

The room became quiet.

“He didn’t just make deals. He destroyed people.””

Julian’s expression darkened.

“What does Adrian’s family have to do with this?””

Thomas looked at him.

“Everything.””

He reached into his jacket and removed a small envelope.

Not old.

Not damaged.

Carefully preserved.

He placed it on the table.

“Your grandfather worked with Adrian’s grandfather.””

I stared.

“Worked with?””

Thomas nodded.

“They weren’t partners.””

A pause.

“They were enemies who needed each other.””

Inside the envelope were photographs.

Contracts.

Letters.

I picked up the first photograph.

Two men stood beside a company building.

One was my grandfather.

The other was Adrian’s grandfather.

The same man from the photograph my mother had discovered.

“They created a system,” Thomas said.

“A system?””

“They would buy struggling companies, move money through hidden accounts, and destroy anyone who tried to expose them.””

Caleb looked at the documents.

“This is organized financial crime.””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

My fingers tightened around the photograph.

“And my mother found out.””

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“Then why didn’t you stop it?””

The question came out sharper than I expected.

Thomas looked down.

“I tried.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to say that.””

His eyes met mine.

“You’re right.””

That answer surprised me.

He didn’t defend himself.

He didn’t make excuses.

“I failed your mother.””

The room became silent.

“My father was more powerful than I understood,” Thomas continued.

“When your mother found the evidence, she came to me.””

I swallowed.

“She trusted you.””

“Yes.””

“And then she died.””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The pain in his voice was real.

But pain wasn’t enough.

Not anymore.

“Why did you fake your death?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Because they came after me next.””

“Who?””

He looked at Adrian.

Nobody moved.

Adrian’s face changed slightly.

A tiny reaction.

But I saw it.

“You knew.””

Adrian looked away.

“Emily.””

“You knew my father was alive.””

Silence.

That was all the answer I needed.

My anger exploded.

“You knew!””

Adrian stepped forward.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed.

The sound was bitter.

“Protect me?””

“You have no idea what was happening.””

“No.””

I pointed at him.

“You don’t get to use that word.””

His expression hardened.

“I loved you.””

The room went still.

I stared at him.

“Did you?””

For the first time, Adrian looked hurt.

Good.

Because I had been hurt for years.

“You married me because of my family.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because there was no explanation that could fix eight years of lies.

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“Adrian never expected you to find the accounts.””

Everyone turned toward her.

I narrowed my eyes.

“You knew?””

She looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.””

“And you still helped him.””

Her face hardened.

“I helped myself.””

At least she was honest.

I almost respected that.

Almost.

Thomas looked at her.

“You were supposed to leave him.””

Vanessa looked away.

“What?””

I turned.

“What did you say?””

Thomas sighed.

“Vanessa was originally working with us.””

My head spun.

“Us?””

Thomas nodded.

“Your father. Your brothers. Me.””

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“I was supposed to collect evidence.””

“And instead?””

She looked at Adrian.

“He offered me more.””

Of course.

Money.

Power.

The same things that had destroyed everyone around Adrian.

I looked at Adrian.

“You built everything on betrayal.””

His face remained cold.

“You think you’re innocent?””

The question surprised me.

“What?””

“You think your family is better?””

Nobody moved.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Ask your father why he disappeared.””

Thomas looked away.

“Ask your brothers why they helped cover it up.””

My heart sank.

Again.

Another secret.

Another hidden truth.

I turned toward my family.

“What is he talking about?””

Nobody answered.

And that silence was becoming unbearable.

Marcus finally spoke.

“Emily…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“No more.””

My voice trembled.

“No more protecting me. No more deciding what I can handle.””

I looked at all of them.

“I spent my entire life being told I was loved.””

A tear slipped down my cheek.

“But everyone kept choosing lies over me.””

Nobody argued.

Because it was true.

Then Thomas stood.

“There is one final thing you need to know.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He reached into the envelope.

And pulled out a letter.

My mother’s handwriting.

My breath stopped.

“She wrote this the night she died.””

I couldn’t move.

“She wanted you to have it when you were ready.””

My hands shook as I took it.

The envelope had my name on it.

*Emily.*

I opened it.

Only one sentence was visible.

If you are reading this, it means the people you trusted have failed you.

I looked up.

My father’s face was filled with pain.

My brothers looked devastated.

And Adrian…

Adrian looked terrified.

May you like

Because he knew something was inside that letter.

Something that could destroy him.
