Chapter 9: The Woman Who Wanted Everything

I spent the next hour sitting in silence.

Not because I had nothing to say.

Because I had too much.

Vanessa.

The woman who smiled at my wedding.

The woman who sat in my chair.

The woman who told Olivia I didn’t belong.

She wasn’t just jealous.

She was protecting something.

Something she had stolen.

Robert spread the documents across my dining table.

“Your father’s company was divided after the investigation.””

I stared at the papers.

“How?””

“One portion went into a trust.””

“For me?””

He nodded.

“The other portion went to a temporary manager.””

“Who?””

Robert looked at me.

“You already know.””

I whispered:

“Vanessa.””

He nodded.

I felt sick.

“She managed my family’s company?””

“Yes.””

“And no one told me?””

“Because the records were buried.””

I looked at the documents.

Years.

Decades.

Of secrets.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Vanessa.

I almost laughed.

She knew.

Of course she knew.

The message was simple.

“We need to talk.””

I stared at it.

Then replied.

“Come over.””

Robert looked surprised.

“Are you sure?””

“No.””

I looked toward the window.

“But I’m tired of people hiding behind doors.””

An hour later, Vanessa arrived.

She walked into my house like she owned it.

Maybe because part of her believed she did.

She looked at the papers on the table.

Then at me.

“So you found out.””

No apology.

No surprise.

Just acceptance.

I stared.

“How long were you going to keep this from me?””

Vanessa removed her coat.

“You always were more like your father than I expected.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

“You ask questions too late.””

The arrogance in her voice shocked me.

“You destroyed my family.””

She smiled faintly.

“No.””

“You manipulated Olivia.””

“No.””

“You tried to steal my company.””

Her expression changed slightly.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“The thing you always believed.””

I frowned.

“You think everything is about money.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You think I wanted your money?””

I stayed silent.

She laughed.

“I wanted what your father took from me.””

I stared.

“My father stole from you?””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“That’s a lie.””

“You never knew him.””

The words hit hard.

Because they were cruel.

Because there was a small part of me that wondered.

Vanessa noticed.

“You spent your whole life believing your father was perfect.””

“He wasn’t perfect.””

“No.””

She looked at the documents.

“But he was better at hiding his mistakes.””

I stepped closer.

“What happened?””

For the first time, Vanessa looked angry.

Not fake anger.

Real anger.

“Your father promised my family everything.””

“What?””

“He promised partnership.””

She pointed at the papers.

“Then when the company grew, he pushed us out.””

“That’s not true.””

“You weren’t there.””

“No.””

My voice became colder.

“But you were.””

Silence.

Vanessa looked away.

That was the first crack.

“Why Daniel?””

I asked.

She looked back.

“What?””

“Why involve my husband?””

Her face hardened.

“Because Daniel owed me.””

“Owed you what?””

She didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Tell me.””

Vanessa smiled.

A strange, tired smile.

“Because Daniel wasn’t the only one who lost something.””

“What does that mean?””

Before she could answer, the front door opened.

Daniel walked in.

His face was pale.

“Mom.””

Vanessa turned.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“She needs to know.””

My heart tightened.

“Know what?””

Daniel walked toward the table.

Then placed a folder down.

“I lied about one thing.””

I stared.

“One thing?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I didn’t marry you because of your company.””

I almost laughed.

“Then why?””

He looked at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“Because I was trying to fix what my father did.””

I froze.

“What did your father do?””

Daniel opened the folder.

Inside was one final document.

A confession.

Signed by Daniel’s father.

My hands shook as I read the first sentence.

“I was responsible for the fraud committed against Sarah Bennett’s father.””

I stopped.

Everything went quiet.

Daniel whispered:

“My father framed yours.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

Then Daniel said the words that changed everything.

“But he didn’t do it alone.””

I looked up.

“Who helped him?””

Daniel’s face collapsed.

And Vanessa closed her eyes.

Because the answer was already in the room.

“Mom.””

The silence afterward was unbearable.

I stared at Vanessa.

The woman who had spent years teaching her daughter to hate me.

The woman who sat in my seat at my wedding.

The woman who wanted me gone.

She wasn’t trying to take my place.

She was trying to erase the evidence of what she had done.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Your father ruined my life.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

My voice was calm.

“He survived yours.””

And for the first time, Vanessa looked afraid.

Because she knew.

May you like

The truth was no longer buried.

And now everyone was going to see it.
