Chapter 7: The Contract Beneath The Love Story

I read the message again.

Then again.

Not because I didn’t understand it.

Because I refused to.

For seven years, I had built a marriage around a simple belief.

That Daniel chose me.

That after losing his first family, he found something real with me.

But now I was staring at proof that maybe I wasn’t a person he fell in love with.

Maybe I was an opportunity.

The acquisition agreement sat on my kitchen table.

A document I had never seen.

A plan I was never supposed to discover.

I called Robert immediately.

He answered after one ring.

“Sarah?””

“I need you to find something.””

“What?””

“Every document Daniel signed before we met.””

There was a pause.

“Are you sure?””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“But I need the truth.””

Two hours later, Robert arrived.

He carried a box.

Not a folder.

A box.

That scared me.

“I contacted an old legal archive,” he said.

I stared at it.

“What is this?””

“Everything Daniel and Vanessa created before your marriage.””

I opened the box.

The first papers were harmless.

Divorce agreements.

Financial statements.

Custody arrangements.

Then I found it.

A proposal.

Not romantic.

Not personal.

Business.

The title was printed across the top.

“Bennett Strategic Acquisition Plan.””

My hands went cold.

“Bennett.””

Robert nodded.

“Your company.””

I turned the page.

The first paragraph made my stomach twist.

“Target acquisition through marital partnership.””

I stopped reading.

I couldn’t breathe.

“Target?””

Robert looked away.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I pushed the paper toward him.

“Say it.””

He stayed quiet.

“Say what they called me.””

Robert swallowed.

“The target.””

The word felt like a knife.

I closed the file.

For a moment, I was back in the ballroom.

The slap.

The laughter.

Olivia saying I tried to buy my way into the family.

The irony almost made me sick.

They accused me of using money to earn love.

While they were using love to steal money.

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I stared at his name.

Then answered.

“Why?””

He didn’t speak immediately.

“Sarah.””

“Why did you marry me?””

Silence.

A long one.

“Who showed you?””

“That’s not an answer.””

“Sarah, please let me explain.””

“No.””

My voice became stronger.

“You had years to explain.””

Daniel sighed.

“It wasn’t supposed to become this.””

I closed my eyes.

“That sentence again.””

“I meant it.””

“You always mean it after you get caught.””

“Sarah—”

“Did you marry me because of my company?””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Too desperately.

“Then why was there an acquisition plan?””

Nothing.

I looked at Robert.

He lowered his eyes.

Daniel finally spoke.

“Because I was trying to protect Olivia.””

I laughed.

“You used me to protect her?””

“No.””

“You built a fake marriage.””

“No.””

“You hid contracts.””

“Sarah, listen.””

“I listened for seven years.””

The silence on the phone was unbearable.

Then Daniel whispered:

“I loved you.””

A part of me wanted to believe him.

The woman I was before all of this wanted to believe him.

But she wasn’t in control anymore.

“Did you love me before or after you saw my company’s numbers?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

And that was the answer.

I ended the call.

That night, I barely slept.

At 3:17 a.m., I heard footsteps downstairs.

I grabbed my phone and walked carefully toward the living room.

Someone was inside.

My heart raced.

“Who’s there?””

The lights turned on.

Olivia stood near the doorway.

Her face was pale.

“What are you doing here?””

She held something in her hand.

“Sarah, I found something.””

I almost laughed.

“Another secret?””

“No.””

Her voice trembled.

“Something about my father.””

She handed me a small envelope.

“What is it?””

“I found it hidden in Dad’s office.””

I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

From Daniel.

To Vanessa.

My eyes moved across the page.

And every sentence made my hands shake.

“Vanessa,

I know you’re angry, but this was the only way.

Sarah trusts me completely.

Once the company transfer is complete, Olivia will never have to worry again.

I promised you I would fix what happened eight years ago.

I’m keeping my promise.””

I stopped.

Eight years ago.

The same words again.

I looked at Olivia.

“What happened eight years ago?””

She looked terrified.

“I don’t know.””

I turned the letter over.

There was one final line.

A line written beneath Daniel’s signature.

“If Sarah ever discovers the truth about her father, everything falls apart.””

I froze.

“My father?””

Olivia whispered:

“Sarah…”

I looked at her.

“My father died when I was twelve.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“Then why would Daniel mention him?””

Neither of us spoke.

Because suddenly, the story wasn’t just about money.

May you like

It was about something that happened before I ever met Daniel.

Something he had been hiding from the beginning.
