Chapter 2: The Documents They Hid
I left the wedding reception without saying goodbye.
Nobody stopped me.
That hurt more than I expected.
For seven years, I had believed I was part of Daniel’s family.
But as I walked through the hotel lobby alone, carrying the pain in my cheek and the weight in my chest, I realized I had been standing outside a door they never planned to open.
Rain tapped against the windshield as I drove home.
The house was dark.
The same house where Olivia had painted her bedroom walls purple at sixteen.
The same house where she cried after her first breakup.
The same house where she once hugged me and whispered, “I’m lucky you married Dad.””
I sat in the driveway for ten minutes before going inside.
My phone rang.
Robert.
I answered immediately.
“What did you find?””
His voice was careful.
“Sarah, I need you to come to my office.””
“Robert.””
A pause.
“Please.””
That scared me.
Robert had handled my company contracts for twelve years.
I had seen him negotiate million-dollar deals without changing his expression.
But tonight, he sounded afraid.
The next morning, I walked into his office.
A folder was waiting on the table.
Thick.
Heavy.
My name was written across the front.
I sat down.
“What is this?””
Robert folded his hands.
“These are copies of documents connected to the property transfer.””
“The transfer I approved?””
He looked away.
“No.””
My stomach tightened.
“What do you mean, no?””
Robert opened the folder.
“Someone attempted to transfer ownership of several assets yesterday.””
I stared at the papers.
“The condo?””
“Yes.””
“The car?””
“Yes.””
“The investment account?””
He nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
My fingers went cold.
“But those require my signature.””
“They do.””
“Then how?””
Robert slid a document toward me.
I looked at the signature.
My signature.
Except it wasn’t mine.
The room became completely silent.
“That’s impossible.””
“I thought so too.””
I looked up.
“Who did this?””
Robert hesitated.
That hesitation answered the question before his words did.
“Someone inside your family.””
I felt my heartbeat in my ears.
“No.””
“Sarah—”
“No.””
Because there were only three people who knew enough about my accounts.
Daniel.
Olivia.
And Vanessa.
I stood up.
“Daniel would never.””
Robert didn’t argue.
He didn’t defend him either.
That was worse.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Daniel.
Sarah, please come home. We need to talk.
I stared at the screen.
Seven years of memories flashed through my mind.
Our first dinner.
Olivia’s graduation.
Daniel promising me, “You’re not replacing anyone. You’re becoming someone new in our lives.””
I wanted to believe that man still existed.
But then I saw another notification.
An email.
From the bank.
Subject: Emergency Verification Required.
My hands shook as I opened it.
There was one sentence.
A sentence that made the room disappear around me.
“Mrs. Sarah Bennett, we have received a request to remove you as the primary beneficiary of your husband’s estate.””
I looked at Robert.
“Beneficiary?””
He slowly nodded.
“Sarah…”
“What?””
He pushed another document toward me.
“This is why I needed you here.””
I looked down.
At the bottom of the page was a name.
May you like
A name I never expected to see.
My husband’s.
