Chapter 9: The Truth Ryan Never Told Me

I spent the entire night thinking about Diane’s words.

The reason Lily was born.

Not why she was born.

Not what happened during the pregnancy.

The reason.

Like Lily was a plan.

A purpose.

A weapon.

I hated that thought.

Because Lily was not a secret.

She was not evidence.

She was my daughter.

The next morning, Ryan came to my house.

Alone.

No Diane.

No excuses.

Just him.

“I need to tell you everything.””

I almost closed the door.

Then I looked at him.

“Talk.””

He nodded.

“I met Diane before you knew me.””

“I know.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You don’t.””

He looked exhausted.

“She found out she was sick.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She thought she didn’t have much time.””

I waited.

“She became obsessed with leaving something behind.””

I crossed my arms.

“Lily?””

“Yes.””

I felt sick.

“She wanted a granddaughter she could control.””

Ryan nodded.

“But that wasn’t the beginning.””

“What was?””

He looked at the floor.

“You.””

I froze.

“What?””

Ryan swallowed.

“My mother chose you.””

The words didn’t make sense.

“What do you mean?””

“She watched you before we met.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“She knew about me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Ryan took a breath.

“Because of your family history.””

I stared.

“My family?””

He nodded.

“Your father.””

I went completely still.

“My father died when I was nineteen.””

“I know.””

“How would you know?””

Ryan looked away.

“Because Diane researched you.””

The room felt smaller.

“Why?””

He whispered:

“Because your father was the doctor who treated Claire after she disappeared.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Ryan nodded.

“He helped her.””

I sat down.

Suddenly memories I had ignored came back.

My father.

The locked office drawer.

The old files he refused to discuss.

The way he reacted whenever Diane’s name was mentioned.

“My father knew.””

“Yes.””

“And he never told me.””

“Because he promised Claire.””

I covered my face.

All these years.

All these secrets.

And everyone thought silence was protection.

“It wasn’t an accident,” Ryan said.

“What?””

“Meeting you.””

I looked at him.

“My mother pushed me toward you.””

The betrayal was different now.

Not just from him.

From my entire history.

“Did you know?””

“No.””

“Not at first?””

“No.””

I believed him.

And somehow that hurt more.

Because he had been manipulated too.

But he had still chosen to continue it.

“Then why stay?””

Ryan looked at me.

“Because I fell in love with you.””

I looked away.

“Love doesn’t mean much when you don’t protect someone.””

“I know.””

He placed an envelope on the table.

“What is this?””

“The final document Diane was hiding.””

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Written by my father.

My hands shook.

*If anything happens to me, Diane Carter cannot be allowed near my granddaughter.*

I stopped breathing.

Granddaughter.

Not daughter.

Granddaughter.

My father knew.

He knew before Lily was even born.

I kept reading.

*She believes children can replace the people she lost. She does not love them. She collects them.*

Tears filled my eyes.

Then I saw the date.

Three days before my father died.

I looked at Ryan.

“Why do you have this?””

“Because my mother kept everything.””

“Why?””

“Because she believed one day she would need leverage.””

I folded the letter carefully.

“She planned this for years.””

Ryan nodded.

“Yes.””

My phone rang.

Sarah.

I answered.

“Emily, you need to come to the courthouse.””

“What happened?””

Her voice was urgent.

“Diane filed new evidence.””

My stomach dropped.

“What evidence?””

A pause.

Then:

“Your father’s medical records.””

I felt cold.

“What?””

“She’s claiming your father was mentally unstable and fabricated accusations against her.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Diane was attacking the dead man who couldn’t defend himself.

“Can she do that?””

Sarah hesitated.

“She can try.””

I looked at Ryan.

Then at Lily’s bedroom.

“I’m coming.””

When I arrived at court, Diane was already there.

She looked calm.

Too calm.

She held a folder.

The same kind she carried the night Lily was born.

She smiled at me.

“You finally found the truth.””

I walked closer.

“No.””

I looked at the folder.

“You just finally ran out of lies.””

For the first time, Diane looked angry.

Then the judge entered.

Everyone stood.

The hearing began.

And just as Sarah prepared to present my father’s letter…

The courtroom doors opened.

A police officer walked in.

“Your Honor.””

Everyone turned.

The officer looked at Diane.

“We need to speak with Ms. Carter.””

Diane’s face changed.

“About what?””

The officer held up a document.

“A reopened investigation.””

The room went silent.

Diane stared.

“Investigation into what?””

The officer looked at Claire.

Then at me.

May you like

Then said:

“The disappearance of Claire Carter.””
