Chapter 2: The Woman Who Knew Before Me

Rachel didn’t step inside until I asked her to.

That was the first thing I noticed about her.

She waited.

She didn’t push.

She didn’t act like she owned the room.

Diane always walked into my house like every chair belonged to her.

Rachel stood by the doorway holding a folder like she was afraid the truth inside it might hurt me.

“Who are you?”” I asked again.

She took a breath.

“I was married to Ryan’s older brother.””

I froze.

“Ryan has a brother?””

Her eyes lowered.

“Had.””

The word sat between us.

“What happened?””

Rachel looked toward the stairs.

“Can Lily hear us?””

I glanced upstairs.

“She’s watching cartoons.””

Rachel nodded.

Then she opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Court papers.

Medical records.

Photographs.

I didn’t want to look.

But I did.

And I immediately regretted it.

The first picture showed a little boy.

A child with the same terrified eyes Lily had when Diane entered a room.

“That’s Noah,” Rachel said softly.

“Ryan’s nephew.””

I swallowed.

“What happened to him?””

Rachel’s fingers tightened around the folder.

“My son was six when Diane started watching him after school.””

I already knew where this was going.

“No.””

Rachel looked at me sadly.

“Yes.””

The word came out barely above a whisper.

“She said he was disrespectful. She said he needed structure.””

My stomach turned.

“The same words.””

Rachel nodded.

“The exact same words.””

I sat down.

Suddenly my legs didn’t feel strong enough to hold me.

“Why didn’t Ryan tell me?””

Rachel looked away.

“Because Ryan helped cover it up.””

The room became painfully quiet.

“No.””

“I know that’s hard to hear.””

“No.””

I stood.

“You don’t know my husband.””

Rachel didn’t argue.

She simply placed a document on the table.

A statement.

Signed by Ryan.

My hands trembled as I read it.

It was a statement saying Diane was a loving grandmother.

That Noah was difficult.

That Rachel was overreacting.

My vision blurred.

“That was ten years ago,” Rachel said.

“Ryan was younger.””

“He was an adult.””

I looked at her.

“Why are you showing me this now?””

“Because when I saw the news last night, I recognized the names.””

The police report.

The incident at my house.

Diane.

Ryan.

Lily.

Rachel leaned forward.

“I knew if Diane was back in a child’s life, someone needed to know the truth.””

I heard footsteps.

We both turned.

Lily stood at the bottom of the stairs.

“Mommy?””

I immediately moved toward her.

“Baby, why are you awake?””

She looked at Rachel.

Then whispered:

“Is she here to take me away?””

My heart broke.

I crouched down.

“No one is taking you anywhere.””

Lily looked at Rachel.

“Are you like Grandma?””

Rachel’s face changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

“No,” she said softly.

“I’m someone who wishes I had protected someone sooner.””

Lily didn’t understand.

But I did.

That night, after Lily fell asleep, I went through every video again.

I noticed something I had missed.

A pattern.

The camera wasn’t hidden randomly.

The phone had been placed carefully.

Someone wanted proof.

Someone had planned for the day when nobody would believe Lily.

At 2:03 a.m., I found the final video.

The newest one.

The one after Ryan told Lily to obey Diane.

This time, the camera angle was different.

It showed the hallway.

Diane walked into view.

She was talking to someone.

Ryan.

“You’re getting soft,” Diane said.

Ryan rubbed his face.

“She’s my daughter.””

“And I’m your mother.””

“That doesn’t mean—”

“It means you remember who was there before Emily.””

Ryan looked away.

Then Diane said the sentence that made my blood freeze.

“You know what happens if Emily finds out.””

Ryan didn’t answer.

Diane smiled.

Because she already knew the answer.

“You lose everything.””

The video ended.

I stared at the black screen.

Not because I was confused.

Because I finally understood.

Ryan wasn’t protecting his mother.

He was afraid of her.

And somehow, that made everything worse.

The next morning, I packed a bag for Lily and me.

I was halfway to the door when my phone rang.

A number I didn’t recognize.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice spoke quietly.

“Emily, my name is Daniel Carter.””

My hand froze.

“Carter?””

“Yes.””

My heartbeat changed.

Because I knew that name.

It was Ryan’s father’s name.

The man everyone said had disappeared years ago.

“I need you to listen carefully,” he said.

“Your husband and his mother have been lying to you.””

I looked at Lily.

“About what?””

A long silence.

May you like

Then the man said:

“About who really owns your house.””
