Chapter 7: The Daughter Who Came Back
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
The woman standing on my porch looked like someone who had spent years preparing for this exact moment.
Not because she was angry.
Because she was afraid.
Her eyes moved from Daniel to Ryan.
Then back to Lily.
And when Lily hid her face against my shoulder, the woman’s expression broke.
“She’s scared,” she whispered.
I tightened my arms around my daughter.
“Who are you?””
The woman swallowed.
“My name is Claire Carter.””
Ryan took a step backward.
“No.””
Claire looked at him.
“I know.””
His face lost all color.
“You’re dead.””
The words hung in the air.
Lily looked up.
“Mommy?””
I immediately turned away from the adults.
“It’s okay, baby.””
But it wasn’t.
Nothing about my house felt okay anymore.
Claire slowly raised her hands.
“I’m not here to hurt anyone.””
Daniel moved closer.
“Claire.””
She looked at him.
And for a moment, neither of them spoke.
A father seeing the child he thought he lost.
A daughter seeing the father she thought abandoned her.
Then Claire whispered:
“You really believed I was gone?””
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.
“I searched for you.””
“I know.””
“You were alive?””
Claire nodded.
“I was alive.””
Ryan looked between them.
“I don’t understand.””
Claire laughed softly.
A sad sound.
“You never did.””
I stepped outside.
“Someone needs to explain what is happening.””
Claire looked at me.
“You’re right.””
She glanced at Lily.
“But not in front of her.””
I nodded.
We moved into the living room.
Lily sat beside me while Claire sat across from us.
Ryan stayed standing.
Like he didn’t deserve to sit.
Maybe he knew that.
Claire opened a folder.
Inside were photographs.
Letters.
Documents.
“I was seventeen when Diane convinced everyone I was unstable.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“She said you were lying.””
Claire nodded.
“She told people I was angry because I wanted attention.””
My stomach turned.
The same words.
The same method.
“Then what happened?””
Claire looked at Ryan.
“I found out Diane had been taking money from Dad.””
Daniel looked shocked.
“What?””
“She had been hiding accounts for years.””
Ryan stared.
“My mother?””
Claire nodded.
“She didn’t want me to tell anyone.””
“What did she do?”” I asked.
Claire looked down.
“She locked me in my room.””
The room went silent.
“I was seventeen,” she continued.
“She said if I admitted what I knew, she would make sure nobody believed me.””
Ryan’s jaw tightened.
“But you disappeared.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Claire looked at him.
“Because I realized nobody was coming.””
Ryan looked devastated.
“You could have called me.””
“I did.””
His face changed.
“What?””
“I called you three times.””
Silence.
“I left messages.””
Ryan shook his head.
“No.””
Claire reached into the folder.
She pulled out an old phone.
A phone that looked almost exactly like Lily’s.
“I saved them.””
Ryan stared.
Claire pressed a button.
A recording played.
A younger voice.
A frightened teenage girl.
“Ryan, please answer. Mom is lying. She’s not letting me leave. Please.””
The message ended.
Ryan looked like someone had punched him.
“I never got those.””
Claire looked at him.
“Because Diane deleted them.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Claire turned to me.
“That’s why she’s afraid of Lily.””
I frowned.
“What does Lily have to do with you?””
Claire looked at my daughter.
“Diane believes children inherit things.””
“Things?””
“Traits. Blood. Secrets.””
My skin prickled.
“She thinks Lily is connected to me.””
I looked at Ryan.
“What does that mean?””
Ryan looked away.
Claire answered.
“It means Diane believes Lily carries proof of what she did.””
“What proof?””
Claire opened another document.
A DNA report.
My breath caught.
“What is that?””
Ryan closed his eyes.
“The truth.””
I stared at him.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
The anger came instantly.
“You knew and said nothing?””
“I was trying to protect Lily.””
“No.””
My voice was sharp.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Ryan didn’t argue.
Because he knew.
Claire pointed at the report.
“Diane believed Lily was biologically connected to me.””
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.””
Claire looked at me.
“Is it?””
I looked at Ryan.
He couldn’t meet my eyes.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
Ryan whispered:
“Emily…”
“What aren’t you telling me?””
He took a breath.
“Before Lily was born, Diane ordered a private test.””
My stomach dropped.
“Without my permission?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
Ryan looked at Lily.
“The results showed something unexpected.””
I waited.
“She wasn’t trying to prove Lily wasn’t mine.””
A horrible feeling formed in my chest.
“She was trying to prove something else.””
Claire finished:
“She was trying to prove Lily was connected to me.””
I stared.
“That makes no sense.””
Claire looked down.
“It does if you know what Diane did.””
Nobody moved.
Then my phone rang.
I looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A familiar voice spoke.
Diane.
“You found Claire.””
I froze.
“How do you know?””
She laughed.
“Because I know everything that happens in that house.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“You’ve been watching us?””
“Emily, you still don’t understand.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You don’t understand.””
A pause.
Then Diane said:
“You think I’m the villain because I corrected a child.””
I looked at Lily.
“No.””
“I think you’re the villain because you convinced everyone your cruelty was love.””
Silence.
Then Diane whispered:
“Ask Claire why she really came back.””
The call ended.
Claire looked at me.
May you like
And for the first time...
She looked afraid.
