Chapter 9: The Last Person Emily Trusted
Nathan stared at the photograph on his phone.
The hospital room.
The white sheets.
Emily lying in the bed.
And beside her…
His father.
Alive.
Standing next to the woman Nathan had spent six years mourning.
His hands became numb.
“No.””
The word escaped his mouth before he could stop it.
Everyone looked at him.
His father’s face changed.
He knew.
He knew exactly what Nathan had seen.
“What is it?”” Claire asked.
Nathan didn’t answer.
He couldn’t.
Because the picture was impossible.
The accident had happened on a rainy night.
Emily had been taken to the hospital.
The doctors had told Nathan she never regained consciousness.
They told him she died before he arrived.
But this picture showed something different.
She was alive.
And his father was there.
Nathan slowly turned toward him.
“You were with her.””
His father said nothing.
“You were there.””
“Nathan—”
“No.””
His voice shook.
“You let me believe she died alone.””
His father closed his eyes.
“I didn’t know what else to do.””
Nathan felt anger burning through him.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
He threw the phone onto the table.
“Everyone has an excuse.””
His father looked down.
“I made mistakes.””
“Mistakes?””
Nathan laughed.
“You disappeared. You lied about being dead. You watched me bury you. You watched me bury my wife.””
His father accepted every word.
Maybe because he knew he deserved them.
“I was trying to keep you alive.””
Nathan froze.
“What does that mean?””
His father looked toward Michael.
Then Claire.
Then finally Nathan.
“It means Emily wasn’t the only target.””
The room became silent.
Nathan’s anger shifted into fear.
“Explain.””
His father sat down.
“After Emily discovered the financial records, she contacted me.””
Nathan stared.
“You?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because she found evidence connecting Mark to the accounts.””
Nathan’s chest tightened.
Mark.
Again.
“She knew?””
His father nodded.
“Emily was brilliant. She followed the money faster than anyone expected.””
Michael stepped forward.
“She realized the account in Nathan’s name was being used to move stolen funds.””
Nathan looked at him.
“And you knew?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Michael looked away.
“Because Emily asked us not to.””
Nathan froze.
“Emily asked?””
Michael nodded.
“She said if you knew too early, you would confront Mark.””
“And?””
“And Mark would know she had told you.””
Nathan looked back at the photograph.
“So Emily was planning something.””
“Yes.””
His father’s voice became quieter.
“She wanted to expose everyone involved.””
“Everyone?””
His father nodded.
“Your father’s old business partners. The people who helped hide the money. The people who were afraid Emily would reveal the truth.””
Nathan felt sick.
“And Mark?””
“Mark was one of them.””
Nathan shook his head.
“But Mark was my best friend.””
His father looked at him.
“That was why he was dangerous.””
The sentence hurt because Nathan knew it was true.
The closest people could hurt the most.
“What happened that night?””
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Michael answered.
“Emily called me first.””
Nathan looked at him.
“She was scared.””
“What did she say?””
Michael swallowed.
“She said someone had followed her.””
Nathan’s breathing changed.
“She knew?””
“Yes.””
Michael looked at the floor.
“She told me she was going to meet someone who could help her.””
“Who?””
Michael looked at Nathan.
“Mark.””
Nathan felt like he had been hit.
“No.””
“Emily thought he could be turned.””
“Turned?””
“Help her expose the truth.””
Nathan shook his head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Michael nodded.
“It didn’t to us either.””
“Then why?””
“Because Mark had been acting strange.””
Nathan remembered.
The late-night calls.
The questions.
The way Mark always seemed to appear at the right moment.
Nathan had trusted him because Mark had been there when nobody else was.
After Emily died, Mark was the person who helped him survive.
And now…
Nathan didn’t know if any of it was real.
“What happened when she met him?””
Michael looked at his father.
His father answered.
“She never made it to the meeting.””
Nathan’s face tightened.
“The accident.””
“Yes.””
“But Mark wasn’t there.””
His father looked at him.
“How do you know?””
Nathan stopped.
Because he didn’t.
He only knew the story he had been told.
The story everyone repeated.
His father continued.
“The truck driver was paid to hit Emily’s car.””
Nathan looked at the photograph again.
“And you were at the hospital.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His father’s expression broke.
“Because I arrived before the ambulance.””
Nathan went silent.
“What?””
“I found her.””
The words came slowly.
“She was alive.””
Nathan felt tears burning his eyes.
“She was alive?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you let me think she was dead?””
His father looked devastated.
“Because she asked me to.””
Nathan froze.
“Emily asked you?””
His father nodded.
“She knew someone was watching the hospital.””
“Who?””
“Mark.””
Nathan stepped back.
“Why?””
“Because Mark didn’t expect Emily to survive.””
A cold silence filled the room.
Nathan whispered:
“She knew.””
“Yes.””
His father looked at him.
“Emily knew Mark tried to kill her.””
Nathan covered his mouth.
Everything changed.
The accident.
The hospital.
The photograph.
The secrets.
But one question remained.
“If Emily survived…”
His voice broke.
“Where did she go?””
Nobody answered.
And that silence was worse.
Nathan looked at his father.
“Where is my wife?””
His father looked down.
“She died later.””
Nathan closed his eyes.
Pain hit him all over again.
“But not that night.””
“No.””
“Then when?””
His father hesitated.
“Three weeks later.””
Nathan felt the room spinning.
Three weeks.
Emily had been alive for three weeks.
And he never knew.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
His father’s voice cracked.
“Because Emily believed you were being watched.””
“By Mark?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did she trust you?””
His father looked at the photograph.
“Because she knew I had already lost one son.””
Michael looked away.
“And she didn’t want you to lose your father too.””
Nathan stared.
Emily had protected his family even while knowing she might not survive.
The thought broke something inside him.
Then Claire spoke.
“I need to tell you something.””
Everyone turned.
Claire looked terrified.
Nathan noticed immediately.
Not guilty.
Afraid.
“What?””
Claire swallowed.
“Mark isn’t the only person involved.””
Nathan stared.
“We know.””
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“You don’t understand.””
She looked at Michael.
Then Nathan.
“Mark was following orders.””
The room went silent.
“Whose orders?””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“The person who controlled everything.””
Nathan stepped closer.
“Who?””
Claire whispered:
“The person Emily called right before she died.””
Nathan felt his heart stop.
“Who did she call?””
Claire looked toward the hallway.
Toward Lily’s room.
Then she said:
“Your mother.””
Nobody moved.
Nathan stared at her.
“My mother has been dead for years.””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice became barely audible.
“She isn’t.””
Nathan felt the blood drain from his face.
“What?””
Claire took out her phone.
She opened a picture.
An address.
A recent photograph.
A woman standing outside a house.
Older.
But unmistakable.
Nathan knew that face.
He had seen it in childhood photos.
He had seen it in old memories.
His mother.
Alive.
Claire looked at him.
“The person who has been controlling this entire story…”
She paused.
“…is the woman who taught you your first lessons about trust.””
Nathan stared at the image.
Another dead person.
Another impossible truth.
Another piece of his life that had been stolen.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
Nathan answered.
A woman’s voice came through.
Soft.
Familiar.
A voice he had not heard in years.
“Nathan.””
He stopped breathing.
“Mom?””
A long silence followed.
Then the voice whispered:
“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””
Nathan gripped the phone.
“Where are you?””
The woman on the other end started crying.
“I’ve been waiting for you to learn the truth.””
Nathan’s voice shook.
“Why did you let me bury you?””
The answer came quietly.
“Because, Nathan…”
A pause.
“Your father wasn’t the only person who needed to disappear.””
Nathan froze.
“What does that mean?””
The woman whispered:
“It means Emily wasn’t killed because she discovered the truth.””
A pause.
“She was killed because she was about to reveal me.””
The call ended.
Nathan stared at the phone.
And for the first time in six years…
May you like
he realized the woman he had been searching for wasn’t Emily’s killer.
She was the person Emily was trying to expose.
