Chapter 7: The Dead Men Who Were Still Alive

Nathan held the photograph so tightly that the edges bent under his fingers.

He couldn’t look away.

Three people.

Emily.

Michael.

His father.

And the date on the back.

Six weeks after his father was supposed to have died.

The world Nathan knew began falling apart piece by piece.

“My father was dead,” he whispered.

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could.

Not Claire.

Not Michael.

Not even Lily.

Nathan turned the photograph over again, hoping somehow he had read it wrong.

But the date remained.

Clear.

Impossible.

“Where did you find this?”” Nathan asked.

Lily pointed toward the old storage box.

“It was inside Mommy’s things.””

Nathan looked at Claire.

“You knew about this?””

Claire shook her head quickly.

“No.””

“Then why did you look scared when you saw it?””

Claire opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That silence told Nathan more than an answer.

“You knew something.””

Claire looked away.

“I knew Emily was hiding things.””

“Everyone knew something.””

Nathan’s voice was filled with exhaustion.

“Everyone except me.””

Lily looked between them.

“Dad…”

Nathan immediately softened.

He knelt beside her.

“I’m okay, sweetheart.””

“You’re not.””

The honesty of a child hurt more than any lie.

Nathan touched her hand.

“You did the right thing showing me.””

Lily nodded.

“Mommy said I should give you everything.””

Nathan froze.

“Everything?””

Lily reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a small folded piece of paper.

Nathan stared.

“Where did you get that?””

“Mommy hid it in my old music box.””

Claire stepped forward.

“Lily, why didn’t you tell me?””

The little girl looked afraid.

“Because Mommy said not to.””

Nathan stood immediately.

“Enough.””

Claire stopped.

His voice wasn’t loud.

It didn’t need to be.

“I’m done watching my daughter be scared of telling the truth.””

Claire looked down.

Nathan took the paper.

His fingers shook as he unfolded it.

Emily’s handwriting.

Again.

But this time, the words were different.

Not a warning.

Not fear.

A confession.

Nathan,

If you are reading this, I failed to explain everything before I ran out of time.

Nathan swallowed.

The account in your name was created to protect us.

He stopped.

Protect us.

He continued.

I found out your father and Michael were fighting over something bigger than money. They were both hiding information from each other. I created the account because I discovered someone was moving money using your identity.

Nathan looked up.

The pieces were starting to connect.

I knew you would be angry that I kept this from you. But I was afraid. Not of you. Of what would happen if the wrong person found out.

His eyes moved faster.

Claire is not the only person involved.

Nathan’s chest tightened.

But she is not the person who started this.

He stopped.

The words didn’t make sense.

Claire saw his expression.

“What does it say?””

Nathan ignored her.

He kept reading.

The person controlling everything is someone we never suspected.

The final line made his heart pound.

Nathan, trust your instincts. If someone tells you your memories are wrong, ask yourself who taught you those memories.

The note ended there.

No name.

No explanation.

Just another question.

Nathan lowered the paper.

“She knew.””

Michael, who had been silent near the doorway, spoke.

“Yes.””

Nathan looked at him.

“You knew she wrote this?””

Michael nodded.

“She gave it to someone before she died.””

“Who?””

Michael looked at Claire.

Nathan followed his eyes.

“No.””

Claire shook her head.

“I didn’t have it.””

“Then who?””

Nobody answered.

The silence became unbearable.

Nathan turned to Michael.

“You said you were protecting me.””

“I was.””

“Then tell me everything.””

Michael looked at him.

“Not everything can be explained in one conversation.””

Nathan stepped closer.

“I’m not asking for a conversation.””

His voice hardened.

“I’m asking why my wife died.””

Michael looked away.

And Nathan saw something.

Pain.

Real pain.

“I loved Emily.””

Nathan’s expression changed.

“What?””

Michael continued.

“Not the way you did.””

A cold feeling moved through Nathan.

“She trusted me.””

Nathan laughed bitterly.

“She trusted you?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did she fear you?””

“Because she was afraid of what I was becoming.””

That answer caught Nathan off guard.

Michael sat down.

“For years, I wanted revenge. Your father destroyed my childhood. He erased me from his life. He built a perfect family and pretended I never existed.””

Nathan listened.

“Then Emily found me.””

“How?””

“She was investigating your father’s accounts.””

Michael looked at the photograph.

“She thought I was the enemy.””

“Weren’t you?””

Michael didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

“She discovered the truth,” he continued.

“Your father wasn’t just hiding money. He was hiding a crime.””

Nathan felt a chill.

“What crime?””

Michael looked at him.

“The accident.””

The room went silent.

Nathan’s voice lowered.

“Explain.””

“Your father arranged it.””

Nathan shook his head.

“No.””

Michael didn’t stop.

“He wanted Emily gone.””

“Why?””

“Because Emily found proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Michael looked at Claire.

Claire’s face turned pale.

“What?”” Nathan demanded.

Michael said:

“Your father wasn’t working alone.””

Nathan felt his stomach tighten.

“Who helped him?””

Michael looked directly at Claire.

Nathan’s anger exploded.

“Claire?””

Claire immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Michael continued.

“Not Claire.””

Nathan stopped.

“Then who?””

Michael looked at the photograph again.

“Someone who was closer to Emily than anyone realized.””

Nathan felt confused.

“Who?””

Before Michael could answer, the front door opened.

A man’s voice echoed through the house.

“Nathan.””

Everyone turned.

A tall man stood in the doorway.

Older.

Gray hair.

Familiar.

Nathan’s heart stopped.

Because he knew that voice.

He had heard it thousands of times.

The man stepped inside slowly.

“You’ve been asking a lot of questions.””

Nathan stared.

“No.””

The man smiled sadly.

“Yes.””

Nathan looked at Claire.

Then Michael.

Then back at the man.

Because the impossible had happened again.

Another person who was supposed to be gone forever had returned.

“Dad?”” Nathan whispered.

His father smiled.

“Hello, son.””

Nathan couldn’t breathe.

“My father died.””

The man tilted his head.

“That’s what everyone believed.””

Nathan backed away.

“What is happening?””

His father looked around the room.

At Michael.

At Claire.

At the photograph.

Then he said something that made Nathan’s blood run cold.

“Michael told you about me.””

Nathan stared.

“How are you alive?””

His father walked closer.

“Because, Nathan…”

He paused.

“I was never the one who died.””

The room went silent.

And then his father added:

“The man buried six years ago was the person who knew the truth about what happened to Emily.””

Nathan felt the ground disappear beneath him.

May you like

Because if his father was alive…

then whose body had been buried in his grave?
