Chapter 5: The Brother Who Never Died
Nathan couldn’t move.
The man standing in his hallway looked like a ghost.
Not because he was terrifying.
Because he was impossible.
Six years of grief.
Six years of unanswered questions.
Six years of believing certain people were gone forever.
And now one of them was standing ten feet away.
Alive.
Michael Whitmore looked older than the photograph.
His hair was darker around the sides, his face harder, his eyes carrying years Nathan couldn’t understand.
But there was no denying it.
The resemblance was there.
The same eyes Nathan saw every morning in the mirror.
The same eyes his father had passed down to both sons.
Michael looked at the phone in Nathan’s hand.
Then he looked at Claire.
“You told him.””
It wasn’t a question.
Claire lowered her head.
“He already knew too much.””
Michael sighed.
“That’s exactly why you were never supposed to say anything.””
Nathan finally found his voice.
“You walked into my house.””
Michael looked at him calmly.
“Yes.””
“After hiding from me for six years.””
Michael’s expression changed slightly.
“After protecting you for six years.””
Nathan almost laughed.
“Protecting me?””
“Yes.””
“You destroyed my family.””
Michael stepped closer.
Nathan immediately moved between him and the stairs.
Between him and his children.
Michael noticed.
A small smile appeared.
“You’re exactly like your father.””
Nathan’s anger rose.
“Don’t compare me to him.””
“Why?””
“Because I’m nothing like him.””
Michael studied him.
“You don’t even know who he was.””
“I know enough.””
“No,” Michael said quietly.
“You know what he wanted you to know.””
The words bothered Nathan because they sounded familiar.
Too familiar.
Everyone in his life had been telling him versions of the same thing.
You don’t know the truth.
You don’t understand.
You weren’t told everything.
Nathan was tired of being the last person to know about his own life.
“Start talking,” Nathan said.
Michael looked at Claire.
Then back at him.
“Not here.””
“This is my house.””
“No.””
Michael’s voice hardened.
“This is the house you built on top of a grave.””
Nathan froze.
Claire immediately stepped forward.
“Michael.””
But Michael didn’t stop.
“You think Emily was the only person your father destroyed?””
Nathan’s jaw tightened.
“Leave Emily out of this.””
“Why?””
“Because she’s dead.””
Michael’s expression softened for a moment.
A strange sadness crossed his face.
“She died because she got too close.””
Nathan felt his anger shift into fear.
“What does that mean?””
Michael didn’t answer.
Instead, he walked toward the living room.
Nathan followed.
Every instinct told him this was dangerous.
But every unanswered question pulled him forward.
Michael sat down.
Like he belonged there.
Like he had done it before.
Nathan noticed.
That bothered him more than anything.
“How long have you been watching us?””
Michael looked up.
“Watching?””
“You knew where I lived. You knew Claire told me. You knew about the notebook.””
Michael was silent.
That silence was an answer.
Nathan’s hands tightened.
“You’ve been around.””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
Michael looked toward the family photos on the wall.
“Since before Emily died.””
The room became still.
Nathan felt a sharp pain in his chest.
“Why?””
“Because your father left me with nothing.””
“My father was dead.””
“Before he died.””
Nathan stared.
Michael continued.
“Your father spent years building an empire. He took credit for other people’s work. He ruined lives and paid people to stay quiet.””
“That doesn’t explain Emily.””
“No.””
Michael’s voice lowered.
“It explains why Emily started searching.””
Nathan looked at Claire.
“She knew?””
Michael nodded.
“Emily discovered your father had hidden accounts.””
The same accounts.
The same money.
Nathan remembered Mark’s findings.
“Why would my father hide money?””
“Because he knew someone would eventually come looking.””
“Who?””
Michael looked directly at him.
“Me.””
Nathan felt a strange mixture of anger and confusion.
“So this was revenge.””
Michael didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised Nathan.
“You admit it?””
“I wanted him exposed.””
“But he was already dead.””
Michael’s face became cold.
“That didn’t mean his secrets died with him.””
Nathan stood.
“You used Claire.””
Claire looked away.
Michael didn’t answer immediately.
That was enough.
Nathan saw it.
“You did.””
Michael finally spoke.
“I needed someone close.””
“And she was that person.””
“Yes.””
Nathan looked at Claire.
The woman who had been his wife.
The woman who had kissed him goodbye every morning.
The woman who had raised his children.
She wasn’t just hiding something.
She had been placed into his life.
“Was any of it real?”” Nathan asked.
Claire looked at him.
“What?””
“Our marriage.””
The question seemed to hurt her.
More than any accusation.
“Nathan…”
“Answer me.””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
Nathan waited.
“Yes, it was real.””
“Then why?””
She looked down.
“Because at first, I was using you.””
The words hit harder because she said them herself.
Nathan turned away.
“But then?””
Claire swallowed.
“Then I fell in love with you.””
Nathan shook his head.
“That doesn’t fix anything.””
“I know.””
For the first time, Claire didn’t defend herself.
She just stood there.
Broken.
Michael watched them silently.
Nathan noticed.
“You don’t care.””
Michael looked at him.
“About what?””
“About what you did to her.””
Michael’s expression remained unreadable.
“She made her choice.””
Nathan looked at Claire.
“And you?””
Michael leaned forward.
“I made mine.””
The anger returned.
“You ruined my life.””
Michael’s eyes sharpened.
“No.””
Nathan stared.
“Excuse me?””
“I exposed the life that was already ruined.””
Nathan wanted to hit him.
Not because of what he said.
Because some part of him feared there was truth hidden inside it.
A sound came from upstairs.
A small floorboard creaking.
Nathan immediately turned.
“Lily?””
No answer.
He rushed toward the stairs.
Michael’s voice stopped him.
“Don’t.””
Nathan looked back.
“What?””
Michael stood.
“Your daughter has already been through enough.””
Nathan’s face hardened.
“You don’t get to talk about my daughter.””
Michael looked down.
“I know.””
For a second, Nathan saw something unexpected.
Regret.
Real regret.
Then Michael reached into his coat pocket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I came here because of this.””
Nathan didn’t take it.
“What is it?””
“The last page.””
Nathan’s heart stopped.
The missing page from Emily’s notebook.
Claire looked terrified.
“You found it?””
Michael nodded.
“She hid it somewhere I couldn’t find.””
Nathan stepped closer.
“Why give it to me?””
Michael looked at him.
“Because Emily didn’t trust me.””
That surprised Nathan.
Michael continued.
“She trusted you.””
Nathan took the envelope.
His fingers shook.
Before opening it, he asked:
“Did you kill my wife?””
Silence.
Michael looked away.
“No.””
Nathan watched him carefully.
“That’s not an answer.””
“It’s the truth.””
“Then who did?””
Michael’s expression changed.
A flicker of fear.
Not guilt.
Fear.
And that scared Nathan more.
Because Michael Whitmore was not afraid of many things.
“I think,” Michael said quietly, “the person who killed Emily is the same person who has been trying to destroy you.””
Nathan opened the envelope.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
Emily’s handwriting.
Only one sentence.
One sentence that made Nathan’s blood turn cold.
“Nathan, if you are reading this, do not trust the person who has been standing beside you all these years.””
Nathan slowly looked up.
At Claire.
At Michael.
At the two people connected to every secret in his life.
Then his phone rang.
Mark.
Nathan answered.
“Nathan,” Mark said urgently.
“What happened?””
“I found the original accident report.””
Nathan’s grip tightened.
“What about it?””
“There’s something you need to see.””
“What?””
Mark took a breath.
“The truck that hit Emily’s car wasn’t an accident.””
Nathan felt the room spinning.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying someone paid the driver.””
A long silence followed.
Then Mark said the words that changed everything.
“And Nathan…”
“What?””
“The person who paid him signed the transfer personally.””
Nathan looked at the paper in his hand.
At the hidden message Emily left behind.
May you like
Then Mark whispered:
“The payment came from an account under your name.””
