Chapter 9: The Truth About My Family

The sentence destroyed something inside me.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it was logical.

For years, I had wondered why Robert controlled every detail of Maya’s life.

Why he made decisions without me.

Why he guarded her history like it belonged to him.

I had thought it was about control.

But now I wondered if it was about fear.

Fear that someone would discover the truth.

“Maya…”

She looked at me.

Her eyes were full of pain.

“Is he my dad?””

I hated that she had to ask.

A child should never have to question who belongs to them.

I reached for her hand.

“He raised you.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

The honesty in her voice broke me.

“No.””

The word was barely audible.

“No, he is not your biological father.””

Maya looked away.

A tear fell.

But she didn’t cry.

She just stared at the window.

“I knew something was wrong.””

I moved closer.

“What do you mean?””

“Growing up, Dad always said I looked like him.””

She gave a small, broken laugh.

“But I never saw it.””

Elena started crying quietly.

Maya noticed.

“You knew.””

Elena shook her head.

“Not everything.””

“But you knew.””

Elena looked at her.

“I knew Robert wasn’t your biological father.””

The room became silent.

Maya looked hurt.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Elena closed her eyes.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of him?””

“Yes.””

That answer was honest.

And somehow, that made it worse.

Because everyone had been afraid of Robert.

Everyone except me.

I had just been the last person to realize why.

Dr. Lawson left us alone.

The three of us sat together.

Me.

Maya.

Elena.

Three people connected by a secret none of us created.

Finally, Maya asked:

“Who is my biological father?””

Elena looked down.

“I don’t know.””

Maya froze.

“What?””

Elena swallowed.

“When I was pregnant, I was told Robert was the father.””

“But he wasn’t?””

“No.””

“Then who was?””

Elena looked at me.

“I thought Robert knew.””

The room shifted.

“What does that mean?””

Elena’s voice became smaller.

“Robert had access to my medical records.””

I felt cold.

“He knew there was a possibility.””

“Possibility of what?””

Elena looked at Maya.

“Your biological father was someone Robert knew.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

Before she could answer, the hospital room door opened.

A police officer stepped inside.

“Mrs. Thorne?””

“Yes?””

“I’m Officer Miller.””

My stomach tightened.

“What happened?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“We received a report regarding possible document fraud and medical interference.””

I looked at Elena.

Then Maya.

“Who reported it?””

The officer hesitated.

“Your husband.””

Of course.

Robert.

Even now.

He was trying to control the story.

“He said you were accessing confidential records without authorization.””

I almost laughed.

“He stole my daughter’s medical history.””

The officer remained calm.

“We’re investigating.””

Then he handed me an envelope.

“What is this?””

“Something we recovered from Mr. Thorne’s office.””

My hands shook.

“Recovered?””

“During a search requested by legal counsel.””

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Not old.

Recent.

Written three months earlier.

From Robert.

The first line made my stomach drop.

*Elena, we need to talk before Claire finds out the truth about Daniel.*

Daniel.

Not the attorney.

Someone else.

Someone connected to Maya.

I read further.

*You promised me you would never contact him again.*

My eyes moved faster.

*If he finds out Maya knows, everything falls apart.*

Everything falls apart.

I looked at Elena.

“Who is Daniel?””

Her face went completely white.

“I…”

“Who is Daniel?””

She closed her eyes.

And when she spoke, her voice was almost a whisper.

“Daniel was Maya’s biological father.””

The room went silent.

I stared at the letter.

Then at Elena.

Then at Maya.

My daughter had spent fifteen years believing she knew her family.

But the truth was that every person around her had been carrying a different version of the story.

And Robert’s biggest secret wasn’t that he hid Elena.

It wasn’t that he hid the surgery.

It wasn’t even that he wasn’t Maya’s biological father.

It was that he had spent fifteen years keeping Maya away from the one person who might finally tell her the whole truth.

The officer looked at me.

“Mrs. Thorne?””

I looked up.

“Yes?””

He hesitated.

“There’s one more thing.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

He held up another document.

“We found evidence that Robert has been monitoring your daughter’s medical records for years.””

I stared.

“Why?””

The officer looked at the paper.

“Because he was afraid someone would discover what happened on the night Maya was born.””

I felt a chill.

“What happened that night?””

The officer looked at me.

May you like

Then said:

“According to the records, Maya was not the only baby delivered in that room.””
