Chapter 5: The Truth Robert Buried
I didn’t scream.
That surprised me.
I thought I would.
I thought I would throw something.
I thought I would demand answers until the walls shook.
But sometimes the biggest betrayals don’t create noise.
They create silence.
“You’re lying.””
The words came out quietly.
Robert looked at me.
“I wish I was.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My eyes burned.
“No, because that means you lied to me for fifteen years.””
He looked down.
“I know.””
“Fifteen years.””
“I know.””
“You let me raise a child while knowing there was another woman out there who believed she was her mother.””
His face tightened.
“It wasn’t like that.””
“Then explain it.””
He didn’t.
Because there was no explanation that could make it acceptable.
I walked out of his office.
I couldn’t breathe in that room.
I couldn’t breathe in that house.
I drove back to the hospital.
The entire way, I kept hearing one sentence.
She was Maya’s biological mother.
When I reached the hospital, Maya was awake.
She looked at me immediately.
“Mom?””
I forced myself to smile.
“I’m here.””
She studied my face.
“You talked to Dad.””
It wasn’t a question.
“Yes.””
“What did he say?””
I sat beside her.
For a moment, I wanted to lie.
I wanted to protect her.
That was what parents did.
But I had spent years protecting a lie.
“Maya…”
She waited.
“There is something about your past that I didn’t know.””
Her face changed.
“What?””
I took her hand.
“Your father knew someone named Elena.””
The second I said the name, Maya went completely still.
“You know her?””
“No.””
“But I do.””
My breath caught.
“What?””
Maya looked at the blanket.
“When I was little, I remember a woman.””
My heart started racing.
“What woman?””
“She used to sing to me.””
I couldn’t speak.
“She smelled like lavender.””
Maya’s voice became softer.
“I thought she was a dream.””
“A dream?””
She nodded.
“Because Dad told me I imagined her.””
I felt sick.
“What else did he say?””
“He said some people leave because they can’t stay.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“But I always wondered why I remembered her.””
I held her hand tighter.
“Did you know her name?””
She whispered:
“Elena.””
The room felt smaller.
I called Dr. Lawson.
Not because he could fix it.
Because I needed someone else to confirm that I wasn’t losing my mind.
Later that night, the hospital contacted Elena.
Apparently, she was still listed as a medical contact.
That fact alone made me feel like I had been living inside someone else’s story.
The next morning, a woman walked into Maya’s room.
I knew who she was immediately.
Not because I had seen her before.
Because Maya looked exactly like her.
Same eyes.
Same expression.
Same small movement of tilting her head when she was nervous.
Elena stopped at the doorway.
Her eyes filled instantly.
“Maya.””
My daughter stared.
Neither of them moved.
Then Elena whispered:
“You’re so much taller than I imagined.””
Maya looked at me.
Then back at her.
“Who are you?””
Elena’s face broke.
“I’m your mother.””
The words landed like a storm.
Maya stepped back.
“No.””
Elena nodded slowly.
“I know this is impossible.””
“No.””
“I know you’re angry.””
“No.””
Maya’s voice cracked.
“You don’t get to just walk in here and say that.””
Elena started crying.
“I know.””
“Where were you?””
That question destroyed the room.
Elena looked down.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Maya laughed bitterly.
“By leaving?””
“I didn’t leave.””
“Then where were you?””
Elena looked at me.
Then away.
And I understood.
There was a part of the story nobody had told me.
A part even Robert had hidden.
“Tell us,” I said.
Elena looked at me.
“I was told you knew.””
My stomach dropped.
“Knew what?””
Her expression changed.
“That Robert told you everything.””
I stared.
“He told me nothing.””
Elena closed her eyes.
And when she opened them again, I saw pain.
Not guilt.
Pain.
“Robert told me that you agreed.””
“Agreed to what?””
Elena’s voice trembled.
“To raise Maya without knowing the truth.””
The words felt impossible.
I looked at Maya.
She looked just as shocked.
“Why would I agree to that?””
Elena whispered:
“Because he said you didn’t want to know.””
A cold silence filled the room.
Then Maya said the words that changed everything:
“Mom…”
She pointed toward the folder on the table.
“The name on the surgery papers.””
I looked down.
Elena’s name was there.
But underneath it was another signature.
A signature I hadn’t noticed before.
The second person who approved the procedure.
Robert Thorne.
And beside it, a handwritten note.
*Mother unaware. Maintain confidentiality.*
My hands started shaking.
May you like
Because suddenly the secret wasn’t just that Robert hid Elena.
The secret was that he had intentionally erased her.
