Chapter 6: The Letter Hidden For Fifteen Years

I couldn’t stop staring at the note.

Three words.

Mother unaware.

They weren’t just words.

They were a confession.

Robert didn’t forget to tell me.

He chose not to.

For fifteen years.

Maya watched my face.

“Mom?””

I folded the paper slowly.

“I’m okay.””

She looked at me.

She knew I wasn’t.

Teenagers notice more than adults think.

Especially teenagers who have spent their entire lives learning to read silence.

Elena sat in the corner, crying quietly.

I wanted to hate her.

Part of me tried.

But every time I looked at her, I saw pieces of Maya.

And that made everything more confusing.

“Why did you believe him?”” I asked.

Elena wiped her face.

“Because Robert showed me documents.””

“What documents?””

“Custody papers.””

I froze.

“Custody?””

She nodded.

“He told me you were aware.””

I looked at Maya.

Then back at her.

“You thought I signed away my right to know my own daughter?””

“No.””

Elena’s voice broke.

“I thought you chose it.””

The pain in her face looked real.

And somehow, that made it worse.

Because there was no villain standing in front of me.

Only three people who had been manipulated by the same man.

“Where were you all these years?””

Elena looked down.

“I tried to contact you.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“Several times.””

“When?””

She swallowed.

“After Maya’s surgery. Then again when she was seven. Then when she was twelve.””

I stared.

“Why didn’t I get those messages?””

Elena looked at me.

“Because Robert answered them.””

The room went cold.

Maya whispered:

“He blocked you?””

Elena nodded.

“I thought you didn’t want me near her.””

I closed my eyes.

Robert.

Every time I thought I understood the betrayal, there was another layer.

A nurse came in and interrupted.

“Mrs. Thorne?””

“Yes?””

“There’s something else in Maya’s file.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She handed me an envelope.

“It was added years ago but was never opened.””

My fingers went numb.

“By who?””

The nurse checked.

“By Elena Voss.””

Everyone went silent.

Elena looked surprised.

“I didn’t know that was still there.””

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter.

The paper was old.

Yellowed at the edges.

The first line made my breath catch.

*To Maya, if you ever find this…*

I looked at Elena.

“What is this?””

She whispered:

“A letter I wrote in case I never got to see her again.””

Maya looked at me.

“Read it.””

I hesitated.

Then I unfolded it.

The handwriting was careful.

Beautiful.

Like someone trying to leave a piece of themselves behind.

“Dear Maya,

If you are reading this, it means someone finally told you the truth.

I want you to know one thing before anything else.

I never left because I stopped loving you.

I left because I believed staying would hurt you.””

My vision blurred.

Maya listened silently.

The letter continued.

“I was told your father had arranged everything. I was told you had a safe home. I was told your family wanted privacy.

I believed him because I trusted him.

That was my mistake.””

My hands tightened.

A cold feeling moved through me.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

“If Robert ever tells you that I abandoned you, please remember this:

I came back.

Someone made sure you never knew.””

I stopped reading.

Maya looked at me.

“What?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because at that exact moment, my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Robert.

I opened it.

Only one sentence.

*You need to stop digging before you destroy this family.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

A photo.

My blood ran cold.

It was a picture of Maya.

Taken yesterday.

Inside the hospital.

Someone had been watching us.

May you like

And underneath the photo were five words:

*You don’t know everything yet.*
