Chapter 8: The File Marked Michael Hall

Detective Reed left Marcus's house before I could ask another question.

He told the officers to remain nearby and instructed me not to approach Daniel's office under any circumstances.

I watched Reed's vehicle disappear down the street.

Then I looked at the photograph again.

Vanessa stood outside the office with the brown envelope tucked beneath her arm. Daniel was inside, holding the folder marked with my name.

Neither of them looked frightened.

They looked as though they were preparing for a meeting.

That disturbed me more than the angry messages.

If Vanessa had genuinely feared Daniel, why had she gone to him?

And if Daniel had been planning to make me disappear, why was he still behaving as though he controlled the situation?

I walked into the kitchen.

Marcus was making sandwiches for Lily.

"Anything new?"" he asked.

"Vanessa went to Daniel's office.""

Marcus stopped spreading mustard.

"After everything that's happened?""

"Apparently.""

He shook his head.

"Those two are still hiding something.""

"I know.""

Lily appeared in the doorway carrying her stuffed rabbit.

"Daddy, can I call Mason?""

I crouched beside her.

"We're trying to arrange that, sweetheart.""

"Does he know I'm okay?""

"I'm sure the caseworker has told him.""

She hugged the rabbit.

"Can you tell him yourself?""

I promised I would as soon as the arrangements were made.

Then I returned to the living room and waited.

At 11:42, Detective Reed called.

"We've located Vanessa.""

"Is she okay?""

"She's safe. She's been brought in for further questioning.""

"And Daniel?""

"He was at his office when officers arrived. We're reviewing materials recovered there.""

"Did you find the folder?""

"Yes.""

I gripped the phone.

"What was in it?""

Reed paused.

"Insurance records, correspondence, and several documents relating to a proposed residential placement for Lily. There are also records of financial transactions between accounts connected to Daniel and Vanessa.""

"Does that prove they planned this together?""

"It establishes a connection that requires further examination. We still need to determine what the payments were for and who authorized them.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Can I see the documents?""

"Not while they're evidence in an active investigation.""

I understood.

But understanding didn't make the waiting easier.

After the call, I sat beside Lily while she watched a cartoon. She laughed at a talking dog, then turned toward me as if she were surprised she'd made a sound like that.

I smiled at her.

"You can laugh, sweetheart.""

She leaned against my arm.

"Mommy used to say I wasn't allowed to laugh after I was bad.""

My throat tightened.

"You can laugh whenever you want.""

She watched the screen for a moment.

Then she asked, "Can I have a snack?""

The question was so ordinary that it nearly broke me.

"Of course.""

I brought her apple slices, crackers, and a small bowl of yogurt. She ate slowly, occasionally glancing at the kitchen as though she expected someone to take the food away.

I sat beside her until she finished.

Nobody took anything away.

At 1:15, Rachel called.

She'd received an update from the investigators and wanted to discuss the next steps. She also had a question about the house.

"Michael, do you have any idea why Daniel would have a file containing documents about Lily's placement and your insurance policy?""

"No.""

"Did he ever discuss financial difficulties with you?""

I thought about it.

"Last year, he said his business had been struggling. He told me he was dealing with a few bad investments.""

"Did he ask you for money?""

"Once. I lent him five thousand dollars.""

"When?""

"About nine months ago.""

Rachel asked me to look for the transfer record.

I found it in my banking app and sent her the details.

She called back ten minutes later.

"The transfer occurred about three weeks before the beneficiary amendment.""

I stared at the screen.

"Do you think the money was connected?""

"I don't know. But the timing is worth giving to the investigators.""

I sent the record to Detective Reed.

Then I remembered something else.

Six months earlier, Daniel had asked whether I'd ever considered selling the house.

He'd told me property prices were rising and that I could make a substantial profit.

I'd refused.

Lily loved her bedroom, and I'd spent years fixing up the place.

Daniel had laughed and said I'd regret it.

At the time, I'd thought he was teasing me.

Now I wasn't sure.

I searched my messages for the conversation.

There it was.

You should think about selling before the market turns, he'd written.

I'd replied:

I'm not going anywhere. This is Lily's home.

His response had been strange.

Not every home belongs to the person living in it.

I had assumed he was talking about property values.

I forwarded the exchange to Detective Reed.

At 3:30, an officer arrived with an update about Mason.

The child-protection team had arranged for me to speak with him by video call under supervision.

His face appeared on the screen.

He was sitting at a table in a quiet room, wearing a blue sweatshirt that looked too big for him.

"Hey, buddy," I said.

His lower lip trembled.

"Dad.""

"How are you doing?""

He shrugged.

"Okay.""

I knew that wasn't true.

"Have you eaten?""

He nodded.

"Good. You deserve to eat whenever you're hungry.""

His eyes filled with tears.

"Even if I take Lily's food?""

"Even then. There's enough food for both of you.""

He looked down.

"Mom said there wasn't.""

"I know.""

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then Mason took a folded sheet of paper from beside him.

"The caseworker said I could show you this.""

He held it up to the camera.

It was a page covered in handwriting.

"I copied it from Mom's notebook before she took it away," he said.

"I thought maybe it would help.""

My heart pounded.

"Mason, did you tell the caseworker where you got that?""

"Yes.""

"Good. She'll make sure the investigators receive it.""

He unfolded the paper.

At the top was a list of dates and amounts.

Near the bottom, a sentence had been underlined twice.

If the house transfers before the policy pays, the debt is cleared.

I stared at the words.

"What does that mean, buddy?""

Mason shook his head.

"I don't know. But I heard Uncle Daniel say the house was worth more than the insurance.""

I looked toward Rachel, who was sitting beside me.

She leaned closer to the screen.

"Mason, did you hear anything else?""

He nodded.

"He said Dad wouldn't have to worry about the house anymore because someone else would own it.""

Rachel thanked him gently and told him he didn't need to remember anything else right now.

When the call ended, she turned toward me.

"That statement is important, but we'll need the investigators to establish what it means.""

I stared at the handwritten page.

The insurance policy had a death benefit of seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

The house was worth considerably more than I'd paid for it.

If Daniel had been planning to obtain both the insurance money and control of the property, then the residential placement might have been only one part of a larger scheme.

But why would Vanessa agree to it?

I thought about the fifty thousand dollars she'd mentioned.

Perhaps she'd believed she was being paid to remove Lily from the household.

Perhaps she'd understood more.

I couldn't know yet.

At 5:08, Detective Reed called again.

"We've identified the person who sent you the anonymous messages.""

"Who?""

"A former employee at Daniel's office. Her name is Sarah Collins.""

I remembered the name.

Sarah had worked for Daniel for almost three years before leaving suddenly the previous winter.

"What did she know?""

"She says she discovered irregularities in several client files. She also says she recognized your name in a set of documents she believed had been altered.""

"Why didn't she contact me sooner?""

"She claims she was afraid of retaliation. We're still checking her account against the records we've recovered.""

I rubbed my face.

"Can I speak to her?""

"Not yet.""

He paused.

"Michael, there's another development. Daniel has denied planning to harm you. He's claiming the insurance changes were made with your consent and that Vanessa fabricated the guardianship arrangement to obtain money from him.""

I stared at the wall.

"So they're blaming each other.""

"That's one way to describe it.""

"What do you believe?""

"My job isn't to decide who sounds more convincing. It's to establish what the evidence supports.""

I respected that.

Then he added, "We found something else in the office. A draft property transfer agreement.""

My heart stopped.

"Whose property?""

"Your house.""

"Was my signature on it?""

"Yes.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

"But I never signed a transfer agreement.""

"We understand that. The document will be examined.""

I looked toward Lily, who was building a tower from blocks on the floor.

"Who was supposed to receive the house?""

Reed paused.

Then he gave me the name.

"Daniel Hall.""

I felt as though the room had gone silent.

My brother hadn't merely wanted the insurance money.

May you like

He'd prepared a document to take my home.

And according to the draft, the transfer was scheduled for the following morning.
