Chapter 4: The Insurance Policy

I read the message until the words blurred together.

Check the insurance policy you signed last year.

For a moment, the hospital hallway seemed to tilt beneath my feet. The fluorescent lights hummed overhead. Somewhere behind me, a child laughed, and a nurse pushed a cart past an open doorway.

Ordinary sounds.

An ordinary night.

Except someone had just suggested that my own brother had a reason to make my daughter disappear.

I looked through the glass panel into Lily's room. She was sitting on the bed, coloring with a nurse beside her. Every few seconds, she glanced toward the door to make sure I hadn't left.

I couldn't let her see how frightened I was.

I typed a reply to the unknown number.

Who is this?

The answer came almost immediately.

Someone who should have spoken sooner.

I called the number.

It rang once before going to voicemail.

I tried again.

Nothing.

"Michael?""

I turned to see Officer Brooks approaching with a folder under her arm.

"Is everything okay?""

I almost showed her the message immediately. Then I remembered Daniel's warning that Vanessa could destroy both of us, and I hated myself for even considering that his words might be a warning rather than another manipulation.

I handed Officer Brooks my phone.

"Someone sent me this.""

She read the message, then examined the photograph attached to it.

"Do you recognize this document?""

"No. But the message mentions an insurance policy. I bought life insurance last year. Daniel helped me arrange it.""

"Was your brother listed as a beneficiary?""

"I don't remember the details. My wife handled some of the paperwork, and Daniel said he'd help me understand the options.""

Officer Brooks looked up.

"Did you personally sign the policy?""

"I signed several documents at his office. I thought they were all related to the policy.""

"All right. We'll document this message and pass the information along to the appropriate investigators. Don't contact your brother to confront him about it.""

I nodded.

She handed my phone back.

"Michael, I need you to understand that we are still gathering facts. The document and the children's statements are serious, but we have to establish what happened and who was involved.""

"I understand.""

"And one more thing. Until we have more information, don't let anyone take the children without the proper authorization.""

"I won't.""

After she left, I returned to Lily's room.

She immediately reached for me.

"Are we going home now?""

"Not tonight, sweetheart. We're going to stay somewhere safe.""

"Can Mason come, too?""

I sat beside her.

"We're going to make sure Mason is safe, too.""

She studied my face.

"Even if Mommy gets mad?""

I brushed a strand of hair behind her ear.

"Even if she gets mad.""

Lily seemed to consider that answer. Then she rested her head against my arm.

For the first time that evening, her breathing slowed.

I waited until she was nearly asleep before stepping into the hallway and calling my bank.

After verifying my identity, I asked whether they could provide copies of the insurance documents I'd signed the previous year. The representative explained that the policy was administered by a separate company and directed me to its customer service department.

I called the insurer.

The automated menu took forever. When a representative finally answered, I explained that I needed a copy of my policy and its beneficiary information.

"Certainly, Mr. Hall. For security purposes, I'll need to verify a few details.""

I answered her questions.

There was a pause as she accessed the account.

"Thank you. I can confirm that you have an active life insurance policy with a death benefit of seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars.""

My grip tightened around the phone.

"Who is the beneficiary?""

"Your brother, Daniel Hall, is listed as the primary beneficiary.""

I stopped breathing for a moment.

"What about my wife?""

"Your wife, Vanessa Hall, is listed as the contingent beneficiary.""

"If my brother died before me?""

"Then the benefit would pass to the contingent beneficiary, according to the policy terms.""

I stared at the floor.

Daniel would receive the money if I died.

Vanessa would receive it if Daniel couldn't.

"Was this policy changed recently?"" I asked.

"Let me check the history. The policy was originally issued fourteen months ago. There was an amendment eight months later.""

"What amendment?""

"The beneficiary designation was updated.""

"By whom?""

"According to our records, the request was submitted through your authorized account. I can arrange for a copy of the amendment to be sent to you.""

"Please do.""

She explained that she couldn't discuss every detail over the phone, and I thanked her before ending the call.

Fourteen months ago, Lily had been four.

Eight months ago, I'd started taking additional shifts.

And three months ago, Vanessa had begun preparing a document that could send my daughter away.

The dates didn't prove anything.

But they fit together in a way that made my skin crawl.

My phone buzzed again.

This time, it was Daniel.

I'm coming to the hospital. We need to talk.

I called him.

"Don't come here.""

"Michael, I'm already on my way.""

"I said don't come.""

"You're my brother. I'm not going to abandon you because your wife and I had a disagreement.""

"You're not coming anywhere near Lily.""

He exhaled sharply.

"Has Vanessa told you what happened?""

"She's not here.""

"Then who is putting these ideas in your head?""

I lowered my voice.

"Who gets the money if I die, Daniel?""

Silence.

Then he said, "What?""

"My life insurance. Seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars. You're the primary beneficiary.""

"I helped you arrange that policy. We discussed it.""

"You told me it was a standard policy to protect my family.""

"It is.""

"Then why are you the beneficiary?""

"Because you said you wanted me to handle things if something happened to you!""

"I don't remember saying that.""

"Well, you did.""

I closed my eyes.

"Did you help Vanessa prepare that guardianship document?""

"Absolutely not.""

"Did you go into Lily's bedroom while she was locked in the closet?""

"What kind of question is that?""

"Answer it.""

"No, I didn't.""

His voice rose.

"Michael, you're exhausted, and you're letting fear turn everybody against each other. Come home. I'll help you sort this out.""

I almost believed him.

That was the worst part.

Daniel had been my brother for thirty-eight years. He'd taught me to ride a bicycle, helped me through my first divorce, and lent me money when I was struggling to keep my construction business afloat.

I wanted him to be innocent so badly that my mind kept searching for explanations.

Then I remembered Mason's terrified face.

Lily asking whether she would have to return to the closet.

The forged signature.

The policy.

I opened my eyes.

"If you're innocent, you'll have no problem answering questions from the police.""

Daniel's breathing changed.

"You have no idea what you're doing.""

"Maybe not. But I'm going to find out.""

He hung up.

A minute later, a nurse came to tell me Lily was ready to be discharged into my care, subject to the arrangements made with the child-protection team.

I collected her things and carried her toward the exit.

At the hospital entrance, I saw a familiar black SUV parked across the street.

Daniel's vehicle.

He stood beside the driver's door, holding his phone. When he spotted me carrying Lily, he started toward us.

I immediately turned back inside and alerted security.

Daniel stopped at the curb.

He didn't shout.

He didn't wave.

He simply watched us through the glass doors, his expression unreadable.

Then his phone lit up.

Even from a distance, I could see the name on the screen.

Vanessa.

He answered.

And when he looked at me again, he smiled.

Not the warm, reassuring smile I had known all my life.

This one looked like a man who had just realized his plan was falling apart.

I carried Lily to the waiting car.

As I buckled her into the back seat, my phone received an email from the insurance company.

The amended policy was attached.

I opened it.

On the last page was a signature authorizing the beneficiary change.

My name appeared beneath it.

But the date was eight months ago, and the witness listed beside my signature was someone I had never expected to see on an insurance document.

*Vanessa Hall.*

May you like

And underneath her name was a second signature.

Daniel's.
