Chapter 7: The Date on the Calendar

At 6:12 the next morning, Detective Reed called me.
"Michael, I need you to listen carefully. Are you and Lily still at Marcus's house?""
"Yes.""
"Good. Stay there until officers arrive. Don't leave with anyone you don't recognize, and don't attempt to contact your brother.""
I sat upright on the couch, my heart pounding.
"Did something happen?""
"We're following up on information related to your brother and the insurance documents. I can't discuss every detail over the phone.""
"Is Daniel dangerous?""
There was a pause.
"We have enough concerns to take precautions. That's all I can tell you right now.""
The line went dead.
I stared at the phone.
In the next room, Lily was singing to herself while Marcus helped her pour cereal into a bowl. The ordinary sound felt almost unbearable. My daughter should have been worrying about kindergarten, cartoons, and whether she could have another strawberry.
Instead, she was afraid her uncle might make her father disappear.
I went into the kitchen.
Marcus looked at my face and immediately put down the milk carton.
"What's happened?""
"Reed says we need to stay here until the officers arrive.""
Marcus nodded once.
"Then that's what we'll do.""
Lily looked up from her cereal.
"Are the police coming because of Mommy?""
I crouched beside her chair.
"They're coming to make sure everybody stays safe.""
"Will Uncle Daniel come, too?""
"No, sweetheart.""
I hoped that was true.
At 6:34, two uniformed officers arrived. They checked the house, spoke with Marcus, and explained that they would remain nearby while the investigation continued.
One of them asked me whether Daniel knew where we were staying.
"I haven't told him.""
"Has he contacted you since last night?""
"No.""
The officer nodded.
"Keep it that way for now.""
I was about to ask what they'd discovered when my phone rang.
Detective Reed.
"Michael, we've located the notebook Mason described.""
I gripped the counter.
"Where?""
"At the residence. It was recovered during a search conducted under appropriate legal authority. We're reviewing its contents now.""
"Does it mention tomorrow?""
"Yes.""
My mouth went dry.
"What does it say?""
"I can't give you the full contents yet. But there are entries concerning the guardianship paperwork, communications with your brother, and a planned meeting today.""
"Where?""
"That's what we're establishing.""
"Detective, please. This is my family.""
"I understand. But I need you to let us do our jobs.""
I closed my eyes.
"All right.""
Before hanging up, he added, "There's something else. The notebook contains financial references that may relate to the insurance policy. Our financial crimes team is examining them.""
I thanked him and put the phone down.
For the next hour, I tried to keep Lily occupied.
We built a tower from Marcus's old wooden blocks. We drew pictures of animals. I let her put far too many marshmallows into her hot chocolate.
But every time a vehicle passed the house, she stopped what she was doing and looked toward the window.
At 8:17, an unfamiliar number called.
I let it ring.
A voicemail appeared seconds later.
I played it with the officer standing beside me.
A man's voice spoke in a low, measured tone.
"Michael, this has gone far enough. I know you're upset. I know Vanessa has said things she can't take back. But you and I need to settle this before strangers tear our family apart.""
Daniel.
He continued.
"Meet me at the old storage facility at ten. Come alone. Bring the original insurance documents. If you want to know what happened, I'll tell you everything.""
The message ended.
The officer held out his hand.
"May I see that?""
I passed him the phone.
He listened again, then contacted Detective Reed.
Within minutes, Reed called back.
"Do not go to that location.""
"I wasn't planning to.""
"Good. We know about the meeting, and we'll handle it. Don't reply to the message.""
I glanced toward Lily, who was coloring at the kitchen table.
"Why would Daniel ask for the original documents?""
"That's one of the things we're investigating.""
I hesitated.
"Detective, what if he runs?""
"Then we'll deal with that possibility. Your responsibility right now is to keep yourself and your daughter safe.""
I agreed.
At 9:03, a second message arrived from Daniel.
You owe me at least one conversation after everything I've done for you.
I didn't answer.
At 9:11, another appeared.
You think you're the only one who sacrificed for this family?
Then:
If I go down, you're going to lose everything, too.
I handed the phone to the officer.
The messages were preserved, and Detective Reed was notified.
I felt sick, but beneath the fear was something else.
Clarity.
Daniel wasn't asking to explain himself anymore.
He was trying to make me afraid of what he'd reveal.
At 9:46, my phone rang again.
This time, it was Mason's caseworker.
"Michael, Mason has agreed to provide a more detailed statement. Would you be available to speak with him afterward, if the team determines that contact would be appropriate?""
"Of course.""
"He's worried that you blame him for what happened.""
I looked at Lily.
"Please tell him I don't.""
"I will.""
She paused.
"He also remembered something about the notebook. He says Vanessa made him copy a sentence from it onto a piece of paper.""
"What sentence?""
"'The father must be unavailable before the placement can happen.''"
My stomach tightened.
"Did he say what that meant?""
"He believes Vanessa told him you would be traveling for work. But he remembers Daniel saying the words 'the other option' during an argument.""
I thanked her and ended the call.
The other option.
I thought about the insurance policy. The forged signature. The beneficiary change. The money Daniel had promised Vanessa.
I thought about the way he'd watched me outside the hospital.
And I realized I had been asking the wrong question.
I'd been asking why Daniel wanted Lily removed.
But perhaps removing Lily had never been the whole plan.
At 10:26, Detective Reed arrived at Marcus's house.
He looked tired.
"We've made contact with your brother," he said.
"He's being questioned about the financial documents and the planned meeting.""
"Has he been arrested?""
"I'm not going to discuss his legal status with you right now. What I can tell you is that we found evidence requiring further investigation.""
I stepped closer.
"What evidence?""
Reed opened his folder.
"We found a draft letter in Vanessa's notebook. It describes you as an unstable father who abandoned his family. It also refers to a plan to have Lily placed in residential care.""
"She was going to make it look like I'd abandoned Lily?""
"That appears to be the intended narrative. We're still verifying the circumstances.""
I felt my hands curl into fists.
"Why?""
"That remains an open question.""
He showed me a photocopy of a handwritten entry.
The writing was Vanessa's.
Once Michael is out of the picture, the policy can be resolved. Daniel says the money will cover everything. I only have to make sure Lily isn't here when it happens.
I read it three times.
Then I looked up.
"She knew.""
"That entry suggests she knew more than she's admitted. We'll need to establish what she meant and whether the notebook is complete.""
I handed the page back.
"Where is Vanessa now?""
"She's cooperating with investigators, but that doesn't mean we accept every statement she makes as true.""
"Can I see Mason?""
"We're arranging contact through the caseworker.""
Reed closed the folder.
"Michael, I need you to understand that we haven't established every part of this plan. There may be other people involved, and we need to determine what each person actually did.""
I nodded.
Then his phone rang.
He answered, listened, and turned away from me.
I caught only fragments.
"...the second vehicle...""
"...not at the facility...""
"...confirm the address...""
When he hung up, his expression had changed.
"What's wrong?"" I asked.
"We need to move quickly.""
"Why?""
He looked directly at me.
"The storage facility Daniel mentioned wasn't the only location under discussion. We have information about a second meeting, and we're trying to establish whether someone has already gone there.""
My heart began pounding.
"Who?""
Reed hesitated.
Then he said, "Vanessa.""
I stared at him.
"Where is she going?""
"We believe she may be heading to the property where your brother keeps his business records.""
I felt cold all over.
"Why would she go there?""
"We don't know.""
My phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number.
A photograph appeared on the screen.
It showed Vanessa standing outside a brick building, holding a large brown envelope.
Behind her was a sign I recognized immediately.
Daniel's insurance office.
The message beneath it contained only seven words.
She found the original document before we did.
I showed the photograph to Detective Reed.
He studied it, then immediately made a call.
As he spoke, I noticed something in the photograph I'd initially overlooked.
Vanessa wasn't looking at the camera.
She was looking through the office window.
And inside, behind the glass, stood Daniel.
May you like
He was holding a folder.
On its cover was my name.
