Chapter 6: The Truth About the Night Richard Caldwell Died

Marcus pulled the car into an empty parking lot.

He put the phone on speaker.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Marcus whispered:

"Tell me exactly what you mean.""

Ethan's voice sounded exhausted.

"I mean our father didn't die the way Mom told everyone.""

Marcus gripped the steering wheel.

"His death certificate says heart failure.""

"That's what the family was told.""

"Then what happened?""

Ethan took a shaky breath.

"I was there.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

Marcus leaned closer to the phone.

"Where?""

"At the house. The night Dad died.""

I looked at my husband.

He was trembling.

"Why didn't you come to the funeral?""

"Because Mom told me I would be arrested if I showed up.""

Marcus's eyes widened.

"Arrested for what?""

"She said I had stolen confidential company documents and caused Dad's financial collapse.""

"That's ridiculous.""

"She had evidence.""

"What evidence?""

"Documents with my signature. Bank transfers. Emails. Everything.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

"She framed you.""

"Yes.""

I moved closer to the phone.

"Ethan, this is Naomi.""

There was a pause.

"Naomi Ellis?""

"Yes.""

"I know who you are.""

My heart skipped.

"How?""

"Your father saved my life.""

I looked at Marcus.

"What?""

Ethan continued.

"Before Richard died, your father discovered that the Westbridge ownership records had been altered. He contacted me because he knew I had access to the original company archives.""

"Why didn't he tell me?""

"He wanted to protect you.""

I swallowed.

"What happened the night Richard died?""

Ethan was silent for a moment.

Then he began.

Twelve years earlier, Ethan Caldwell had been twenty-nine.

He had already spent years working in his father's company.

Unlike Marcus, who had focused on business development and investor relationships, Ethan had studied civil engineering and construction management.

He understood buildings.

He understood contracts.

And he understood when numbers didn't make sense.

When he discovered the missing Westbridge funds, he confronted Richard.

The confrontation happened in the family estate's private study.

Vivian was there.

So was an attorney named Lawrence Reed.

Richard had placed several documents on his desk.

"Sign them," Richard ordered.

Ethan refused.

"These transfers are fraudulent.""

Richard slammed his fist against the desk.

"You have no idea what you're talking about.""

"I have the original records.""

"Those records are company property.""

"They're evidence.""

Vivian stood beside the fireplace.

"Ethan, sweetheart, don't make this worse.""

He turned toward her.

"Mom, you know what Dad did.""

Her expression hardened.

"Your father built this family.""

"He stole from people!""

Richard stepped forward.

"Watch your mouth.""

Ethan held up a flash drive.

"Everything is here. The transfers, the altered contracts, the fake invoices. I'm sending copies to the investigators tomorrow.""

Richard lunged toward him.

Ethan stepped back.

Vivian screamed.

"Richard, stop!""

But Richard wasn't listening.

He grabbed Ethan by the collar.

The two men struggled.

A heavy glass ornament fell from the desk and shattered.

Then Richard suddenly staggered.

He clutched his chest.

Ethan stepped forward.

"Father?""

Richard fell against the desk.

Vivian rushed toward him.

"Richard!""

Ethan reached for his phone.

But Vivian grabbed his wrist.

"Don't call anyone.""

"He's having a heart attack!""

"Give me the phone!""

Ethan pulled away.

Richard lay motionless on the carpet.

Then Vivian looked at her son.

Her expression changed.

It was no longer the frightened face of a wife watching her husband die.

It was the face of someone calculating what to do next.

"Listen to me carefully," she whispered.

"If anyone finds out you were here, your life is over.""

Ethan stared at her.

"Mom, he needs help.""

Vivian picked up the broken glass ornament.

Then she looked toward the hallway.

"Lawrence, get the car.""

The attorney entered.

He took one look at Richard and immediately understood the situation.

Vivian pointed at Ethan.

"Your brother needs to know nothing about this.""

Ethan shook his head.

"Marcus isn't involved.""

"Then keep him that way.""

Before dawn, Richard Caldwell was pronounced dead.

The family announced that he had suffered a sudden medical emergency.

Ethan was told to leave the estate.

Within days, documents appeared accusing him of financial misconduct.

His bank accounts were frozen.

His passport was flagged during a separate investigation.

Then someone sent him a photograph of Marcus leaving school.

The message contained only one sentence.

*Disappear, or your brother will be next.*

Ethan disappeared.

The story ended.

I sat in silence.

Marcus looked devastated.

"Why didn't you tell me you were alive?""

Ethan's voice cracked.

"I tried.""

"When?""

"Several times. But Mom always found out.""

"How?""

"I don't know. Someone was monitoring the family.""

Marcus looked at me.

Then he asked the question I had been afraid to hear.

"Did Mom kill Dad?""

Ethan hesitated.

"I don't know whether she caused his death. But she stopped me from getting medical help, and she helped cover up what happened afterward.""

I felt sick.

"Do you have proof?""

"I have the original recording, documents, and a witness.""

"Who?""

Ethan paused.

"Lawrence Reed.""

Marcus frowned.

"Father's attorney?""

"Yes. He was there that night.""

"Where is he?""

"Missing.""

The word hung in the air.

Then Ethan added:

"But I found something else.""

"What?""

"An account opened three months before Dad died.""

Marcus leaned forward.

"Whose account?""

"Vivian's.""

"How much money?""

"Seven million dollars.""

I stared at the phone.

"Seven million?""

"That's only the first transfer. The money came from the Westbridge project.""

Marcus shook his head.

"Why would she need that much?""

Ethan's answer was chilling.

"Because she knew Dad was planning to transfer the controlling interest to Naomi.""

I felt my entire body go cold.

"What?""

"Your father had already prepared the documents. Richard was supposed to sign the final acknowledgment before the ownership transfer became official.""

I remembered the certificate.

The 51% ownership.

My name.

Everything suddenly made sense.

My father hadn't simply wanted to protect his company.

He had been trying to prevent the Caldwells from taking it.

Marcus spoke quietly.

"Where are you now?""

"I can't tell you.""

"You're my brother!""

"And you're the son of the woman who's been hunting me for twelve years.""

Marcus went silent.

Ethan continued.

"I'll meet you when it's safe. But first, you need to protect Naomi.""

I looked down at my stomach.

"Why me?""

"Because Mom has discovered the trust is still valid. She knows the baby will eventually be part of the inheritance.""

I swallowed.

"What does that mean?""

Ethan's voice softened.

"Naomi, your father left you more than company shares.""

"What else?""

"A sealed legal statement naming the person who helped Richard steal the money.""

I stared at Marcus.

"Who?""

Ethan answered.

"Vivian Caldwell.""

The call suddenly crackled.

Then his voice became urgent.

"Marcus, listen. There's one more thing.""

"What?""

"Mom isn't working alone. Someone inside your company has been sending her information about Naomi.""

Marcus frowned.

"Who?""

Before Ethan could answer, the line went dead.

The following morning, Catherine Miller arrived at our townhouse.

She was a sharp, experienced attorney in her early fifties, with silver-framed glasses and a reputation for handling complicated corporate disputes.

Marcus explained everything.

She examined the documents from the storage unit, listened to the recording, and reviewed the trust certificate.

Then she removed her glasses.

"Mr. Caldwell, Mrs. Ellis, you have a serious situation.""

Marcus leaned forward.

"Can we stop my mother?""

"Possibly. But we need to establish the authenticity of these documents and preserve the original records.""

"What about the ownership?""

Catherine looked at me.

"If this trust is valid, Naomi may have rights that have been deliberately concealed.""

I swallowed.

"Can they take my mother's house?""

"Not without a legitimate legal basis. But the loan needs to be examined immediately.""

She turned toward Marcus.

"Have you signed any documents transferring your voting rights to your mother?""

Marcus nodded.

"Three years ago.""

Catherine's expression became serious.

"Then I need to review those immediately.""

She opened her briefcase.

"There's something else. Vivian has scheduled an emergency meeting of the Caldwell Holdings board for tomorrow afternoon.""

Marcus frowned.

"Why?""

"To authorize a restructuring of the company's ownership.""

I stared at her.

"Does that affect the trust?""

Catherine nodded.

"It could.""

Marcus stood.

"Then I'll stop it.""

Catherine raised a hand.

"Not so quickly. Your mother has already submitted a document claiming that Naomi's trust is invalid.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"On what grounds?""

Catherine looked at the paperwork.

"She's claiming that your father transferred the ownership without the required consent of the original partners.""

"But that's false," Marcus said.

"Then we need to prove it.""

She removed another document.

It was a formal notice.

At the top, in bold letters, were the words:

*EMERGENCY CORPORATE OWNERSHIP HEARING.*

The hearing was scheduled for the following afternoon.

Catherine looked directly at me.

"There's one more complication.""

"What?""

"Your mother-in-law has requested that you attend personally.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

Catherine hesitated.

"Because she intends to argue that you are financially and mentally incapable of managing the inheritance.""

Marcus slammed his palm against the table.

"That's outrageous!""

Catherine remained calm.

"She has also submitted a statement from a private investigator claiming you married Marcus specifically to gain access to the Caldwell fortune.""

I felt my face burn.

After everything she had done, Vivian was now trying to portray me as a gold digger.

Catherine closed the folder.

"She wants to humiliate you publicly before the board makes its decision.""

Marcus took my hand.

"Then she'll have to face both of us.""

I looked at the notice.

For two years, Vivian had made me feel small.

She had ordered me around, insulted my mother, mocked my clothes, and treated my pregnancy like an inconvenience.

But now she was making a mistake.

She was bringing me into a room filled with the very people she believed would obey her.

And she had no idea what my father had left behind.

That evening, I received another message.

This time, it came from Ethan.

*Ethan:* I found Lawrence Reed.

I immediately called him.

He answered after one ring.

"Naomi?""

"Where is he?""

"Alive.""

My heart raced.

"Can we meet him?""

"Yes. But there's a problem.""

"What problem?""

Ethan's voice dropped.

"Lawrence says he has the original document proving your father's ownership transfer.""

I gripped the phone.

"Where?""

"With Vivian.""

I stopped breathing.

Then Ethan added:

"And according to Lawrence, Vivian knows exactly where it is.""

May you like

He paused.

"She's planning to destroy it tomorrow.""
