Chapter 2: The Secret My Father Buried
At 8:15 the next morning, I called the number.
A man answered after the second ring.
"Naomi Ellis?""
"Yes. Who are you?""
"My name is Daniel Brooks. I was your father's business partner.""
I sat at the kitchen table, holding a cup of ginger tea.
"My father never mentioned you.""
"That's because he didn't want certain people knowing we were working together.""
I glanced toward the hallway.
Marcus was upstairs getting ready for work.
"What do you want from me?""
Daniel exhaled.
"To warn you.""
"About Vivian?""
"About the entire Caldwell family.""
My heart began pounding.
"Can you explain?""
"Not over the phone. Meet me at the Peachtree Coffee House at ten. Come alone.""
I hesitated.
"Why?""
"Because your father trusted you. And because I have something that belongs to you.""
The call ended.
I stared at my phone.
Then I called my mother.
She answered with her usual cheerful voice.
"Good morning, sweetheart! How's my grandbaby?""
I smiled despite everything.
"He's doing well, Mom. How are you?""
A pause.
"I'm fine.""
I knew that tone.
"Mom, did something happen?""
"No, honey.""
"Please don't lie to me.""
Another silence.
Then she sighed.
"Someone called yesterday.""
"Who?""
"A woman from the bank. She said they were reviewing the loan and that someone had requested information about the property.""
"Was it Vivian?""
"I don't know. She wouldn't give me a name.""
I closed my eyes.
"Mom, I need you to tell me everything about Dad's business loan.""
She became quiet.
"Why are you asking?""
"Because Vivian had a debt notice with your name on it. She knew the exact amount.""
My mother's breathing changed.
"Naomi, listen to me carefully.""
"What?""
"Stay away from that family.""
My fingers tightened around the phone.
"Mom, what aren't you telling me?""
She started crying.
It was the first time I'd heard her cry since my father's funeral.
"Your father made a terrible mistake before he died.""
"What mistake?""
"He trusted the wrong people.""
"Who?""
My mother whispered one name.
"Richard Caldwell.""
I stopped moving.
Richard Caldwell was Marcus's father.
He had died six years earlier, leaving Vivian in control of the family estate and a substantial portion of the Caldwell business interests.
"Mom, what did Dad do with Richard Caldwell?""
"Your father and Richard were partners in a property development company. They were supposed to build something together.""
"What happened?""
"The project collapsed. Your father was blamed for the losses.""
"Was he responsible?""
"No.""
Her answer came so quickly that I sat straighter.
"Then who was?""
My mother sniffed.
"Richard's company took money that belonged to the partnership. Your father discovered it. He tried to recover the money, but Richard threatened to destroy him.""
I felt sick.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because your father begged me not to. He said he had proof, but he didn't know whom he could trust.""
"Where is the proof?""
"I don't know.""
I remembered Daniel's message.
"Mom, did you ever hear the name Daniel Brooks?""
She gasped.
"Daniel?""
"You know him?""
"Yes. He was your father's closest business associate.""
"He's asking to meet me.""
My mother went silent.
Then she said something I would never forget.
"If Daniel has contacted you, it means the truth is finally coming out.""
At ten o'clock, I arrived at Peachtree Coffee House.
I wore a loose blue maternity dress and a long coat.
My pregnancy was becoming difficult. Even walking across the parking lot left me breathless.
Inside, the smell of freshly brewed coffee and cinnamon filled the air.
A gray-haired man sat near the back window.
He stood as soon as he saw me.
"Naomi?""
"Daniel?""
He nodded.
His eyes moved briefly to my stomach.
"You look just like your father.""
I sat opposite him.
"Everyone keeps saying that.""
Daniel placed a leather folder on the table.
"Your father was a good man. He deserved better than what happened to him.""
I opened the folder.
Inside were old photographs, business contracts, bank statements, and several handwritten notes.
One photograph showed my father standing beside two men in front of a construction site.
I recognized one immediately.
Richard Caldwell.
The other was Daniel.
I looked at the documents.
"What am I looking at?""
"Evidence from a joint development project called the Westbridge Commercial Complex.""
I turned a page.
The numbers made my head spin.
"These are financial transfers.""
"Yes.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Your father discovered that funds from the project were being transferred into accounts controlled by a company associated with Richard Caldwell.""
"How much money?""
"Initially, about three million dollars.""
I stared at him.
"Three million?""
"More money disappeared after that.""
"Why wasn't he reported?""
"He tried. But Richard had powerful friends, expensive lawyers, and a reputation that opened doors.""
Daniel tapped the folder.
"Your father refused to sign a false financial statement. Richard accused him of mismanagement, forced him out of the partnership, and used the resulting lawsuit to bury him in legal expenses.""
I remembered the years when my father had stopped sleeping.
The late-night phone calls.
The unopened bills.
The way he sometimes sat alone in the garage, staring at his hands.
"That's why my parents lost everything?""
Daniel nodded.
"Your father spent his savings fighting to prove the truth.""
I wiped my eyes.
"What does this have to do with Vivian?""
Daniel removed another document.
"After Richard died, Vivian took control of the remaining company assets. She also acquired several outstanding financial obligations connected to the old project.""
I looked down.
My mother's name was printed on one of the documents.
"This is her loan.""
Daniel nodded.
"Your mother borrowed money from a private lending company after your father's business collapsed. That company was later purchased by an investment group controlled by the Caldwell family.""
I couldn't speak.
Daniel continued.
"Your mother has been making payments for years. But the account was transferred several times, and fees were repeatedly added.""
"Are you saying the debt isn't legitimate?""
"I'm saying the amount Vivian showed you needs to be independently audited.""
He slid another page across the table.
It was a corporate registration document.
At the bottom was a signature.
Richard Caldwell.
And beside it, another name.
Naomi Ellis.
I frowned.
"Why is my name here?""
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
"Because your father established a trust in your name before he died.""
I stared at him.
"What kind of trust?""
"A trust holding the controlling interest in a company called Ellis Structural Holdings.""
I shook my head.
"That company doesn't exist.""
Daniel gave me a sad smile.
"It exists. It was kept inactive while your father fought the lawsuit. And it owns a significant portion of the intellectual property and development rights connected to the Westbridge project.""
"How much?""
"Enough to make the Caldwell family very uncomfortable.""
My phone vibrated.
Marcus.
I answered.
"Hey.""
"Where are you?""
"Meeting someone.""
"Who?""
"Daniel Brooks.""
There was a pause.
"Naomi, where exactly are you?""
I gave him the coffee shop's name.
"I'll be there in fifteen minutes.""
"Marcus, what's wrong?""
"Nothing. Just stay where you are.""
He ended the call.
Daniel looked at me.
"Does your husband know about his father's involvement?""
"I don't know.""
Daniel closed the folder.
"Then you need to find out.""
I looked at him.
"Are you suggesting Marcus knew?""
"No. I'm suggesting you shouldn't assume he didn't.""
Before I could answer, the coffee shop door opened.
Marcus walked inside.
His eyes immediately found me.
Then they moved to Daniel.
He stopped.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Finally, Marcus approached our table.
"Daniel Brooks.""
Daniel stood.
"Marcus Caldwell.""
My husband looked between us.
"What are you doing with my wife?""
Daniel didn't flinch.
"Giving her something her father left behind.""
Marcus's expression changed.
"What?""
I reached for his hand.
"Marcus, sit down. There's something you need to see.""
But he didn't sit.
Instead, he stared at the leather folder.
Then he said quietly:
"Naomi, before you open anything else, you need to know something about my father.""
I swallowed.
"What?""
Marcus looked at Daniel.
"Richard Caldwell didn't just steal money from your father.""
May you like
He paused.
"He also used my name to hide where it went.""
