Chapter 3: The Husband Who Didn't Know the Truth

I felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath me.

Marcus pulled out the chair and sat down.

His face was pale.

Daniel remained standing.

"Explain," I whispered.

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

"When I was twenty-four, my father asked me to sign several documents. He said they were related to restructuring the family business.""

"Did you read them?""

"Some of them. Not all.""

My chest tightened.

"Marcus.""

"I know.""

He looked at me.

"I was young. I trusted him. He told me everything was legitimate.""

Daniel opened the folder again.

"Your signature appears on three documents connected to the Westbridge transfers.""

Marcus stared at the papers.

"That's impossible.""

Daniel turned one page toward him.

"Look at the date.""

Marcus leaned closer.

His expression changed.

"I remember this.""

"What?"" I asked.

"My father told me the company needed an additional director for a short period. He said I would be helping with an internal restructuring.""

Daniel nodded.

"That was the arrangement Richard described to the bank. Your name was added to the company records shortly before the transfers began.""

Marcus looked horrified.

"You're saying my father used me?""

"I'm saying your signature was used to authorize financial transactions that you may not have understood.""

I looked at my husband.

"Did you know about any of this?""

"No.""

His answer came immediately.

But I couldn't stop the questions.

"Did you ever hear about my father?""

Marcus shook his head.

"Only once. My father mentioned a man named Ellis who had caused trouble during a development project. He said the man was dishonest.""

I felt something break inside me.

"My father was the man he called dishonest.""

Marcus reached for my hand.

"Naomi, I swear I didn't know.""

I pulled my hand away.

He looked devastated.

Daniel closed the folder.

"There's another problem.""

Marcus turned.

"What now?""

"Vivian has been trying to locate the original ownership documents for years.""

"Why?""

"Because the trust your father established gives Naomi control over certain assets that were supposed to be transferred to Richard Caldwell's company.""

Marcus shook his head.

"That doesn't make sense.""

Daniel removed a final document.

"This is the ownership schedule.""

He placed it between us.

I recognized my father's signature.

At the bottom was a section marked BENEFICIAL OWNER.

My name appeared there.

Underneath it was a percentage.

51%.

I stared.

"Fifty-one percent of what?""

Daniel answered quietly.

"Westbridge Development Group.""

Marcus leaned back.

His face had gone completely blank.

Westbridge Development Group was one of the largest private commercial property developers in Georgia.

The company had grown dramatically over the previous decade.

Its portfolio included office towers, shopping centers, warehouses, and several luxury residential developments.

Marcus's own company had been a major subcontractor on multiple Westbridge projects.

I looked at Daniel.

"Are you telling me I own part of that company?""

"Not just part of it. According to the trust documents, you hold the controlling interest.""

I laughed nervously.

"This has to be a mistake.""

"It's not.""

"Then why haven't I heard about it?""

"Because the trust was never formally activated. Your father wanted to protect you until the original financial investigation could be completed.""

Marcus picked up the document.

"Who administers this trust?""

Daniel hesitated.

"An independent legal office. But someone recently requested a review of the ownership records.""

"Who?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Vivian Caldwell.""

My stomach dropped.

Marcus stood abruptly.

"She's trying to take Naomi's inheritance?""

"She's trying to determine whether the trust can be challenged.""

Marcus began pacing.

"Why didn't you tell me any of this before?""

"Because I didn't know whether you were involved.""

Marcus stopped.

"You thought I was working with my father?""

"I didn't know what to think.""

For the first time, I understood Daniel's caution.

He had spent years watching my father lose everything because he trusted the wrong people.

Now he was sitting across from the son of the man who had destroyed him.

I looked at Marcus.

"Did your father ever give you anything to sign after he died?""

Marcus frowned.

"Why?""

"Just answer me.""

He hesitated.

Then he reached into his briefcase and removed a slim black folder.

"I've been keeping this.""

He placed it on the table.

"After Dad died, Mom asked me to sign a transfer agreement. She said it was needed to simplify the ownership structure.""

Daniel immediately reached for it.

"Do you have the original?""

Marcus nodded.

"Yes.""

Daniel opened the folder.

He read the first page.

Then the second.

His face changed.

"What?"" I asked.

Daniel looked up.

"Marcus, do you know what this document does?""

"No.""

"It transfers your voting rights in several companies to Vivian.""

Marcus frowned.

"She told me it was temporary.""

Daniel pointed to a paragraph.

"There's no expiration date.""

Marcus sat down heavily.

"She said she needed it to manage the estate.""

Daniel continued reading.

"There's something else. This document also gives her authority to negotiate claims connected to Westbridge.""

My hands began shaking.

"So she can negotiate against the company I supposedly own?""

Daniel nodded.

"If the trust is challenged, she could use these voting rights to influence the dispute.""

Marcus stared at the papers.

"My mother lied to me.""

I looked at him.

"Your mother has been lying to both of us.""

He covered his face.

For several moments, the only sound was the hiss of the coffee machine behind the counter.

Then Marcus looked at me.

"Naomi, I'm going to fix this.""

I shook my head.

"You can't fix something you don't understand.""

"I'll find the best lawyers in Atlanta.""

Daniel interrupted.

"Be careful.""

Marcus turned.

"Why?""

"Because if Vivian knows Naomi has the documents, she'll move quickly.""

As if summoned by his words, my phone began ringing.

The caller ID showed Vivian Caldwell.

I stared at it.

Marcus reached across the table.

"Don't answer.""

But I did.

"Hello?""

Vivian's voice was unusually sweet.

"Naomi, darling. I hope you're having a pleasant morning.""

I said nothing.

"I've been thinking about last night. I realize things became emotional.""

"Why are you calling?""

She laughed softly.

"Straight to the point. I suppose that's one of your father's traits.""

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"What do you want?""

"I want to help you.""

"I don't need your help.""

"Everyone needs help sometimes, sweetheart.""

She paused.

"Especially when they discover that their little family secrets are worth a great deal of money.""

My heart pounded.

She knew.

Somehow, she already knew.

"How did you find out?""

"Find out what?""

"About my father's trust.""

There was silence.

Then Vivian chuckled.

"Naomi, you really should be more careful about the people you meet.""

I looked at Daniel.

His face had become rigid.

Vivian continued.

"Listen carefully. Whatever Daniel Brooks has told you, don't believe it. That man ruined your father's life, and now he's trying to ruin yours.""

"Why would he do that?""

"Because he wants the money.""

I looked down at the documents.

"How much money are we talking about?""

Vivian's voice became colder.

"More than you could possibly understand.""

"Then perhaps you should explain it.""

She sighed.

"Come to my house tomorrow morning. Alone. We can discuss an arrangement.""

Marcus shook his head vigorously.

I ignored him.

"What arrangement?""

Vivian lowered her voice.

"The debt against your mother's house can disappear. Your husband can keep his business. And you can return to living a quiet, comfortable life.""

My stomach twisted.

"And what do you want in return?""

"Your signature.""

"On what?""

"An agreement acknowledging that your father's company has no legitimate claim against the Caldwell estate.""

I looked at Daniel.

He slowly shook his head.

Vivian continued.

"Bring your identification. I'll have everything prepared.""

I took a breath.

"And if I refuse?""

Her voice turned icy.

"Then your mother loses her house, Marcus loses his company contracts, and you discover just how unpleasant life can become when you have no money to protect you.""

The line went dead.

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

Marcus took the phone from my hand.

"She's threatening you.""

Daniel gathered the documents.

"She knows about the trust. We have to act before she files anything.""

Marcus looked furious.

"Then we'll go to the police.""

Daniel shook his head.

"We need evidence of the fraudulent transfers first. Otherwise, she'll claim everything was legally authorized.""

I looked at the document with my name on it.

My father had spent years protecting something he believed belonged to me.

And now the woman who had called me a poor girl wanted me to surrender it without even understanding its value.

I slowly closed the folder.

"I'm going to that meeting.""

Marcus turned toward me.

"Absolutely not.""

"She wants my signature. Let her think she can get it.""

"Naomi, you're pregnant. I'm not letting you walk into that house alone.""

I placed my hand over my belly.

"I'm not going there to surrender anything.""

Daniel watched me carefully.

"Then what are you going there to do?""

I looked at the man who had spent years trying to recover my father's stolen legacy.

"Find out what Vivian is afraid of.""

That evening, Marcus and I returned home.

He barely spoke during dinner.

Afterward, he sat at the kitchen island with his laptop open, reviewing old company records.

I was preparing to go upstairs when he suddenly called me.

"Naomi?""

I turned.

"Yes?""

He was staring at his screen.

"I found something.""

I walked toward him.

"What?""

He turned the laptop around.

It showed an email from his mother, sent three years earlier.

The subject line read:

*CONFIDENTIAL — NAOMI ELLIS INVESTIGATION.*

My mouth went dry.

Marcus opened the attachment.

It contained photographs of me leaving work, visiting my mother, and walking into my apartment before our wedding.

There were notes about my salary, my family, my father's former business, and my education.

At the bottom was a paragraph that made my blood run cold.

*Subject appears to have no knowledge of the Ellis trust. Marriage to Marcus Caldwell may provide access to relevant family records. Continue monitoring.*

I stared at the screen.

"She investigated me before we got married.""

Marcus looked sick.

But then I noticed something else.

The email had been forwarded to another person.

The recipient's name was unfamiliar.

*Ethan Caldwell.*

I pointed at the screen.

"Who is Ethan Caldwell?""

Marcus went completely still.

Then he whispered:

"My brother.""

I turned toward him.

"You told me you were an only child.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Because my brother died twelve years ago.""

He opened another attachment.

It was a photograph.

A young man stood beside Richard Caldwell at a construction site.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written a date.

May you like

And beneath it, in my father's handwriting, were five words:

*He knows what Richard did.*
