Chapter 8: The House That Never Existed

The house stood at the end of a dead road.

I had never seen it before.

Yet when I stepped through the gate, something inside me reacted.

The front porch.

The white columns.

The cracked stone steps.

They felt familiar.

Not like a memory.

Like a dream I'd had too many times.

Ryan parked two streets away.

"We walk from here.""

"Why?""

"Because Ethan wants to know we're coming.""

I looked at the house.

"What happened here?""

Ryan didn't answer.

"Ryan.""

He took a breath.

"You were born in that house.""

I stopped.

"A hospital wouldn't let Daniel hide you?""

"He didn't trust hospitals.""

"So Mom gave birth here?""

"Yes.""

"Why don't I remember it?""

"You were a newborn.""

"I mean the house.""

Ryan looked at me.

"Because your memories were altered.""

I laughed nervously.

"You're joking.""

"I wish I were.""

We walked toward the house.

The front door was open.

Mom's car sat in the driveway.

I ran forward.

Ryan caught me.

"Wait.""

He studied the porch.

"What?""

"Wires.""

I looked down.

A thin black line ran beneath the welcome mat.

Ryan pulled me back.

"Stay behind me.""

He crouched and cut it.

Nothing happened.

"Come on.""

Inside, the house smelled of dust and old wood.

Family photographs covered the walls.

I walked past them.

Then stopped.

There was a picture of Mom holding a newborn baby.

Ryan stood beside her.

And Daniel was behind them.

All three were smiling.

I touched the glass.

"Why was this never in our house?""

"Because Ethan destroyed every copy.""

"Then how did he get this?""

Ryan looked at the photograph.

"He didn't.""

A voice came from upstairs.

"I did.""

Mom.

I ran.

"Mom!""

Ryan grabbed my wrist.

"Slowly.""

We climbed the stairs.

At the top, a hallway stretched into darkness.

Mom's voice came from the last room.

"Emily?""

"I'm here.""

"Don't come in.""

Ethan appeared behind her.

He held a gun.

Mom was sitting on the floor.

Her hands were tied.

Ethan looked at me.

"You came.""

"You said you'd let her go.""

"I said I'd let her go if you came.""

"You lied.""

"Of course.""

Ryan stepped into the hallway.

Ethan raised his weapon.

"I said alone.""

Ryan looked at Mom.

"You knew he'd bring me.""

"I knew.""

Ethan smiled.

"That's why I brought someone else.""

A door opened behind us.

Agent Cole stumbled out.

His face was bruised.

A gun was pressed against his neck.

A man dragged him into the hallway.

Cole looked at Ryan.

"Don't.""

Ryan lowered his weapon.

Ethan laughed.

"This is almost sentimental.""

I looked at Mom.

"Why this house?""

Ethan walked toward me.

"Because this is where everything started.""

"What started?""

"Your life.""

He gestured around.

"Your mother thought she was hiding a secret.""

He looked at Ryan.

"Daniel thought he could control the Ledger.""

Then he looked at me.

"And Ryan thought he could save everyone.""

Ryan said, "You killed Daniel.""

Ethan smiled.

"Yes.""

Mom closed her eyes.

"You told me you didn't.""

"I told you whatever kept you obedient.""

I felt sick.

"Why did you kill him?""

"Because he betrayed me.""

"He tried to expose you.""

"He tried to destroy everything we'd built.""

"You built a criminal network.""

Ethan laughed.

"Words.""

He pointed at the walls.

"Every government on earth has secrets. I simply learned how to sell them.""

Cole spat blood.

"You're finished.""

Ethan looked at him.

"Am I?""

He pressed a button.

A screen descended from the ceiling.

A list of names appeared.

Judges.

Senators.

Police chiefs.

Federal officials.

Cole stared.

"What is this?""

"The reason nobody has ever been able to touch me.""

Ryan stepped closer.

"That's not the Black Ledger.""

"No.""

Ethan smiled.

"This is the buyer list.""

Mom looked horrified.

"You kept it.""

"I kept everything.""

He turned to me.

"Except one thing.""

I knew the answer.

"The key.""

Ethan nodded.

"Your biometric identity.""

He walked toward a machine in the corner.

"Put your hand here.""

"No.""

He pointed the gun at Mom.

"Emily.""

Ryan stepped forward.

"Don't do it.""

Ethan fired.

Ryan shoved me aside.

The bullet struck his shoulder.

He collapsed.

"Ryan!""

Mom screamed.

Ethan grabbed me.

"Hand.""

I struggled.

"Get off me!""

He dragged me toward the machine.

"Your father built this.""

"Which one?""

Ethan stopped.

Then smiled.

"That's the question, isn't it?""

He forced my hand onto the scanner.

A red light swept across my palm.

The machine beeped.

*IDENTITY CONFIRMED.*

The walls began vibrating.

Hidden panels opened.

Behind them were rows of servers.

Thousands of tiny lights flickered.

I stared.

"What is this?""

Ethan whispered,

"The truth.""

The screen changed.

A video appeared.

Daniel.

But he wasn't alone.

A woman stood beside him.

I recognized her immediately.

The woman from Ryan's old video.

Mom's face went white.

"Claire.""

I looked at her.

"Who is Claire?""

Mom couldn't speak.

Ryan, bleeding on the floor, whispered,

"Your mother.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

He shook his head.

"Not Sarah.""

The woman on the screen turned toward the camera.

She was holding a newborn.

A newborn with my face.

Ethan whispered,

"Your real mother was never Sarah.""

I looked at Sarah.

She was crying.

"I took you because Claire was dead.""

"No.""

Ryan struggled to sit up.

"Claire wasn't dead.""

Everyone went still.

The video continued.

Claire leaned toward the camera.

"If you're watching this, then Emily is alive.""

My heart stopped.

She said my name.

Not a code.

Not a file number.

My name.

"Emily, I'm sorry.""

I couldn't move.

Claire continued.

"Your father is Ryan.""

Ryan lowered his eyes.

"And Sarah is the woman who saved you.""

I turned toward Mom.

"Then where is Claire?""

The video ended.

The screen went black.

A door opened behind the servers.

A woman stepped out.

Older.

Gray hair.

A scar across one cheek.

She looked directly at me.

And smiled.

"Hello, Emily.""

Sarah screamed.

"Claire!""

Claire looked at her.

"You kept my daughter alive.""

Then she looked at Ryan.

"You kept her hidden.""

Finally, her eyes settled on Ethan.

"And you made one mistake.""

Ethan raised his gun.

"What mistake?""

May you like

Claire smiled.

"You brought her home.""
