Chapter 10: The Second Daughter
"Mom?""
The little girl's voice came from upstairs again.
"Is she finally ready to meet me?""
Nobody moved.
I looked at Sarah.
She was staring at the staircase as if she'd just seen a ghost.
"Who is that?"" I whispered.
Claire's face had gone completely white.
Ryan reached for his weapon.
Ethan laughed.
Not loudly.
Not triumphantly.
Almost like a man watching the final piece of a puzzle fall into place.
"Now you know," he said.
I turned toward him.
"Know what?""
He looked at Claire.
"Tell her.""
Claire swallowed.
"Emily...""
Footsteps sounded above us.
Small footsteps.
One.
Two.
Three.
A girl appeared at the top of the stairs.
She looked about ten years old.
Dark hair.
Pale blue sweater.
Bare feet.
And my eyes.
I couldn't breathe.
The girl stared down at me.
Then smiled.
"Hi.""
Sarah covered her mouth.
I looked at Claire.
"Who is she?""
Claire stepped forward.
"Her name is Lily.""
The girl tilted her head.
"That's what they call me.""
I looked at Ryan.
He couldn't meet my eyes.
"Lily is your sister," Claire said.
"No.""
My voice cracked.
"No, she isn't.""
"She is.""
"You said I was your only child.""
"I said you were the only child I could protect.""
Lily slowly walked downstairs.
Ethan watched her.
"Come here, sweetheart.""
She stopped.
She looked at him.
"No.""
Ethan's smile vanished.
Lily came to Claire instead.
Claire knelt and pulled her close.
I stared at them.
"How?""
Claire looked at me.
"Twins.""
The word hit me harder than any slap.
"Twins?""
Ryan nodded.
"You and Lily were born minutes apart.""
I looked at Lily again.
She was still watching me.
"Then why didn't I know about her?""
"Because Ethan took her.""
I turned toward him.
His face had become expressionless.
"You took my sister?""
"I saved her.""
"You kidnapped her.""
"I kept her hidden.""
"From who?""
"Everyone.""
Claire stood.
"When Ethan discovered there were two babies, he took Lily.""
Sarah whispered, "We thought she was dead.""
Ethan looked at her.
"That was the point.""
I felt sick.
"Why?""
"Because Daniel's encryption protocol required two biological descendants.""
I stared at him.
"Two?""
Ethan nodded.
"You were never the whole key.""
I looked at the dead servers.
"The second authorization.""
"Lily.""
I turned toward my sister.
"Why does the system need both of us?""
Ethan smiled.
"Because your father planned for betrayal.""
Ryan stepped forward.
"Daniel knew someone would eventually get one child.""
"One child?"" I asked.
Ryan nodded.
"So he divided the key.""
I looked at Lily.
"And you had her all these years?""
Ryan shook his head.
"Ethan did.""
Lily spoke softly.
"He wasn't always mean.""
Everyone looked at her.
I crouched so we were eye level.
"What did he do to you?""
She shrugged.
"He taught me things.""
"What things?""
"Names.""
Her expression changed.
"Addresses.""
"Passwords.""
"How to recognize people who lie.""
I looked at Ethan.
"Did he hurt you?""
Lily shook her head.
"Not usually.""
Those two words made my stomach twist.
Ethan looked irritated.
"She was safer with me than she would've been with any of you.""
Claire's voice hardened.
"You stole a child.""
"I protected an asset.""
Lily stepped toward me.
"You're angry.""
"Yes.""
"At me?""
"No.""
She smiled.
"Good.""
I reached for her hand.
She took it.
Her fingers were cold.
For thirteen years, I'd thought I was alone.
Now I was holding the hand of a sister who had spent those same thirteen years wondering whether I existed.
A soft beep came from the server room.
Ryan turned.
"The system is back.""
The main screen flickered.
*PRIMARY AUTHORIZATION: EMILY DANIELS.*
Then:
*SECONDARY AUTHORIZATION: LILY DANIELS.*
Lily looked at me.
"What do I do?""
I squeezed her hand.
"Whatever we decide.""
The screen displayed:
*TWO HANDS REQUIRED.*
Ryan looked at Claire.
"If they complete it, the archive will release.""
Claire nodded.
"Everything.""
Ethan suddenly moved.
He grabbed the fallen gun from the floor.
"Nobody touches that console.""
Cole raised his weapon.
"Drop it.""
Ethan pointed at Lily.
"One step closer and she dies.""
I froze.
Lily looked at me.
Then she whispered,
"He's lying.""
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
Lily continued.
"He always points the gun at people he doesn't want to shoot.""
Ethan's face changed.
Ryan smiled faintly.
"Smart girl.""
"Don't," Ethan snapped.
Lily stepped away from him.
Ethan raised the gun.
Cole fired.
The weapon flew from Ethan's hand.
He dropped to his knees.
Cole rushed forward and cuffed him.
For once, Ethan had nothing to say.
I turned toward the console.
Lily stood beside me.
Two handprints appeared on the glass.
Mine.
Hers.
Ryan stood behind us.
"Ready?""
I looked at my sister.
"No.""
She smiled.
"Me neither.""
We placed our hands down.
The machine scanned us.
*PRIMARY VERIFIED.*
*SECONDARY VERIFIED.*
A final question appeared.
*RELEASE TRUTH?*
I looked at Lily.
She looked at me.
Then we pressed together.
*YES.*
The system came alive.
Every server in the room lit up.
Files began transferring.
Names.
Photographs.
Bank records.
Audio recordings.
Orders.
Payments.
Messages.
Evidence.
Thirteen years of buried truth poured onto screens.
Outside, phones began ringing.
Cole's radio exploded with voices.
"Washington just received the files.""
"New York confirmed.""
"London is asking for verification.""
"Federal servers are being flooded.""
Ryan looked at me.
"It's out.""
I felt tears on my face.
"Is it really over?""
He smiled.
"No.""
I frowned.
"Not yet.""
He pointed toward Ethan.
"Now they have to answer for it.""
Ethan looked at the screens.
For the first time, there was nowhere left for him to hide.
Claire approached him.
"You took thirteen years from us.""
Ethan looked at her.
"I gave you thirteen years of life.""
"You stole my daughter.""
"I kept her alive.""
"You stole my husband.""
"He was going to destroy everything.""
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
"And you destroyed yourself.""
Ethan said nothing.
Cole led him away.
When he passed me, he stopped.
"Emily.""
I didn't answer.
He looked at Lily.
Then back at me.
"You think this makes you free?""
I stared at him.
"No.""
He smiled faintly.
"You'll learn.""
I stepped closer.
"I already did.""
His smile disappeared.
"You taught me something.""
"What?""
"People who control others always convince themselves they're protecting them.""
I looked at Lily.
"And sometimes the person they call a prisoner is the one who knows how to open the door.""
Cole pulled Ethan away.
The house became quiet.
Sarah approached me.
"I know you hate me.""
I looked at her.
"I don't hate you.""
Her eyes filled.
"Thank you.""
"But I'm angry.""
"I know.""
"You should've told me.""
"I should have.""
"Why didn't you?""
She looked at Lily.
"Because I was afraid I'd lose both of you.""
Lily reached for Sarah's hand.
Sarah hesitated.
Then took it.
For the first time, the three of us stood together.
Not pretending.
Not hiding.
Just standing.
Ryan walked toward us.
He looked exhausted.
His shoulder was bandaged.
I looked at him.
"Are you okay?""
"I've been better.""
I smiled.
"You really are my father.""
He smiled back.
"I've been trying to tell you.""
"No, you haven't.""
He laughed.
"Fair.""
I hugged him.
He froze.
Then wrapped his arms around me.
For thirteen years, I had believed my father was a man who hurt my mother.
Then I believed he was a dead man I'd never meet.
Then I believed he was Ryan.
The truth was more complicated.
But it was mine now.
Later that night, we sat on the porch.
The rain had stopped.
Lily sat beside me.
Sarah was inside talking with investigators.
Claire stood near the garden.
Ryan looked at the sunrise.
Lily leaned toward me.
"Can I ask you something?""
"Sure.""
"Do you remember me?""
I thought about it.
"Not exactly.""
She looked disappointed.
"But...""
I took her hand.
"I think some part of me always knew.""
She smiled.
"I did too.""
"What did you remember?""
She looked toward the house.
"A lullaby.""
I stared at her.
"Mom used to sing it.""
Lily nodded.
"Not Mom.""
She looked at Claire.
"Her.""
Claire turned.
She began singing softly.
The same melody.
A tune I hadn't heard since I was a baby.
And suddenly—
I remembered.
A woman's arms.
A warm blanket.
A man's voice.
Ryan.
A second baby crying beside me.
Lily.
And Daniel standing over us.
Then another memory.
Ethan.
He was standing in the doorway.
Watching.
Waiting.
I gasped.
Ryan came toward me.
"What happened?""
I looked at Ethan's empty driveway.
"I remember something.""
"What?""
I stared at him.
"The night I was born.""
Everyone went silent.
I closed my eyes.
And finally understood the last piece.
"Ethan didn't come for the Ledger.""
Ryan frowned.
"What do you mean?""
I looked at Claire.
"He came for Lily.""
Claire's face went pale.
"Why?""
"Because she wasn't just the second key.""
I looked at my sister.
"She was the original.""
Lily stared at me.
"What?""
I remembered Daniel's voice from the recording.
*The child isn't yours.*
I finally understood what he'd meant.
The Black Ledger hadn't been designed around Ryan's DNA.
Or Daniel's.
Or mine.
It had been designed around Lily.
I looked at the phone.
One final file had appeared.
A message from Daniel.
*IF BOTH GIRLS ARE ALIVE, THE LEDGER CAN BE DESTROYED.*
Below it was one sentence.
*BUT ONLY ONE OF THEM CAN DECIDE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT.*
Lily looked at me.
"Which one?""
I stared at the screen.
Then I smiled.
"Neither.""
I picked up the phone.
"We decide together.""
And for the first time in thirteen years, nobody else made the choice for us.
We deleted the Ledger.
Every copy.
Every backup.
Every hidden server.
Every secret that had turned children into weapons.
The world would still have to deal with the evidence we'd released.
Ethan would face the consequences.
The people who bought and sold lives would finally be exposed.
But the weapon itself was gone.
At sunrise, Ryan sat beside us on the porch.
Claire wrapped a blanket around Lily.
Sarah brought four cups of hot chocolate.
Four.
Not three.
Not two.
Four.
And as the sun came up over the house where I had been born, I looked at the family I thought I'd lost.
I hadn't lost them.
I'd simply spent thirteen years looking in the wrong place.
The phone beneath my mattress had started everything.
But it wasn't the thing that saved us.
May you like
The truth did.
And this time, nobody could take it away.
