Chapter 4: The Bloodline
"If you're listening," Dad's voice continued through the speakers, "ask your mother who your real father is.""
The alarm screamed above us.
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Then Agent Cole grabbed my shoulder.
"Move!""
He shoved open the door.
The corridor outside had become chaos.
Agents sprinted in both directions. Red emergency lights flashed across the walls. Somewhere below us, glass shattered.
Mom pulled me close.
"Don't let go of me.""
Ryan was already moving.
"Stairwell. Not the elevators.""
Cole pointed his weapon toward the far end of the corridor.
"Harper, take the west side!""
A woman appeared around the corner.
"Cole!""
She was bleeding from her forehead.
"They're inside.""
"How many?""
"I don't know.""
Ryan looked at Mom.
"Where's the archive?""
She hesitated.
"Sarah.""
"The lower level," Mom said.
"Behind the records vault.""
Ryan swore under his breath.
Cole looked between them.
"You knew there was a lower level?""
"We didn't have time to explain," Ryan said.
"You have about thirty seconds.""
A gunshot cracked somewhere behind us.
I screamed.
Mom grabbed my face.
"Emily, look at me.""
I stared into her eyes.
"Whatever happens, you stay between me and Ryan.""
"Why?""
"Because he knows how to get you out.""
Ryan opened the stairwell door.
"Now.""
We ran.
The stairwell smelled like concrete and dust.
Our footsteps thundered downward.
I counted floors without meaning to.
One.
Two.
Three.
Then the lights went out.
Mom's hand tightened around mine.
"Emily?""
"I'm here.""
Ryan switched on a small flashlight.
"Keep moving.""
We reached the basement.
A steel door stood ahead.
Mom stopped.
Ryan turned.
"What?""
She stared at the door.
"I haven't been here since I was seventeen.""
I frowned.
"Seventeen?""
She didn't answer.
Cole came down behind us.
"Open it.""
Mom pressed her palm against a scanner.
Nothing happened.
She tried again.
Still nothing.
Ryan pulled a key from his pocket.
Mom stared at it.
"You kept it?""
"I never gave it back.""
He inserted it into a narrow slot beneath the scanner.
The door clicked.
Cold air rushed out.
Beyond it was a room filled with filing cabinets.
Thousands of them.
Cole looked stunned.
"This facility doesn't appear on any blueprint.""
"It isn't supposed to," Mom said.
I walked inside.
The walls were covered with photographs.
Faces.
Names.
Dates.
Some people had red lines drawn across their pictures.
Others had green circles.
I saw judges.
Police officers.
Businessmen.
A senator.
Then I saw a photograph of Mom.
Beside it was another picture.
A man I didn't recognize.
He had dark hair like mine.
Same eyes.
Same crooked smile.
I stepped closer.
"Who is that?""
Mom didn't answer.
I turned.
"Mom.""
She looked at the photograph.
Her face collapsed.
"His name was Daniel.""
Ryan closed his eyes.
"Sarah...""
"Don't.""
I looked between them.
"Who was Daniel?""
Mom wiped her cheek.
"Your father.""
I stared at her.
"You just said Dad wasn't my real father.""
"I know.""
"Then who is Daniel?""
She couldn't speak.
Ryan finally did.
"Daniel was your biological father.""
The room seemed to tilt.
I laughed once.
"No.""
Mom reached for me.
I stepped backward.
"You told me Ethan was my father.""
"I was trying to protect you.""
"You lied my entire life.""
"I had no choice.""
"You always have a choice!""
My voice echoed through the archive.
Cole looked uncomfortable.
Ryan said quietly, "Emily, your mother didn't betray you.""
I turned toward him.
"Then explain it.""
He pointed at the photograph.
"Daniel was the man who built the Black Ledger.""
My anger disappeared.
"What?""
Mom shook her head.
"He didn't build it.""
Ryan looked at her.
"He designed the original system.""
"To expose corruption," she said.
"Then why did it become what it became?""
"Because Ethan stole it.""
I stared at the photograph.
"My father stole it?""
"Your stepfather," Mom whispered.
She sat down against a cabinet.
"When Daniel discovered what Ethan had done, he tried to destroy the network.""
Ryan's jaw tightened.
"They killed him.""
I looked at him.
"You said Daniel was killed?""
"Yes.""
"When?""
Mom whispered the answer.
"The night you were born.""
I couldn't breathe.
I remembered the birthday stories.
The photographs.
The hospital bracelet Mom kept in a box.
The story of how Dad had held me for the first time.
None of it belonged to the man I thought it did.
"Then why did Ethan raise me?""
"Because he needed access to you.""
"Access?""
Mom looked at the floor.
"Daniel left something behind.""
I waited.
"What?""
"The final key.""
Ryan stepped toward a cabinet.
"The key isn't an object.""
He pulled open a drawer.
Inside was a photograph of a newborn baby.
Me.
On the back, someone had written:
*THE KEY REMEMBERS.*
I stared at it.
"What does that mean?""
Mom stood.
"Daniel believed the human mind could be used as a cipher.""
I shook my head.
"I don't understand.""
"He didn't leave the password in a computer," Ryan said.
"He left it in you.""
A loud bang shook the archive door.
Cole raised his weapon.
"They found us.""
Mom grabbed my hand.
"There's another exit.""
She pulled a cabinet aside.
Behind it was a narrow tunnel.
Ryan looked at her.
"You never told me about this.""
"I never trusted anyone enough.""
We entered.
The steel door behind us slammed shut.
We ran through darkness.
Then I heard something.
A voice.
Coming from the phone in my pocket.
Dad.
"Emily.""
I stopped.
Mom turned.
The phone wasn't on a call.
Yet Dad's voice continued.
"You've finally found the archive.""
Ryan stared at the device.
"That's impossible.""
Dad laughed softly.
"Ryan.""
A pause.
"Do you remember what happened to Daniel?""
Ryan's face went pale.
Dad continued.
"Ask him why he was there that night.""
The recording ended.
I looked at Ryan.
"Why were you there?""
He didn't answer.
Mom did.
"Because Ryan was the one who killed Daniel.""
The tunnel went silent.
May you like
Ryan closed his eyes.
And I realized the man I'd trusted to save us might have been the person who destroyed my family.
