Chapter 9: The Bloodline Betrayal
Nobody spoke after the call ended.
Ethan stood motionless, his phone still pressed against his ear.
Marcus looked as if someone had punched him in the chest.
"No.""
Ethan slowly lowered the phone.
"Dad...""
Marcus shook his head.
"Don't.""
"She said—"
"I heard what she said.""
Eleanor covered her mouth.
I watched Marcus struggle to breathe.
For eleven years, he had believed Ethan was his son.
He had taught him to ride a bicycle, attended school meetings, celebrated birthdays, and spent countless nights sitting beside his bed when he was sick.
Now someone was telling him that the boy he had raised was biologically the child of his own brother.
And that brother had apparently planned everything.
Marcus turned toward Ethan.
"Do you believe her?""
Ethan's eyes filled with tears.
"I don't know.""
"Do you?""
"I don't know, Dad!""
His voice broke.
Marcus looked away.
Ethan took a step forward.
"Please don't look at me like that.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
"I'm trying to understand.""
Eleanor reached for Ethan.
"Come here.""
He moved toward her.
She held his face between her hands.
"Nothing changes what you are to me.""
Ethan began crying.
"Mom, what if it's true?""
She kissed his forehead.
"Then Daniel gave us a terrible secret. But he didn't give us our family.""
Marcus stood silently.
I knew that silence.
It was the silence of a man whose entire world had been rearranged.
Daniel Reeves interrupted gently.
"We need to verify the claim before making assumptions.""
Marcus nodded.
"Arrange a DNA test.""
Ethan looked at him.
"Do you want one?""
Marcus hesitated.
Then he answered honestly.
"Yes.""
Ethan swallowed.
"Okay.""
Daniel made the arrangements.
But before he could finish, Marcus's phone rang.
The caller ID showed a number from Connecticut.
He answered.
"Hello?""
A woman spoke.
"Mr. Cole? This is Rachel Morgan.""
Marcus straightened.
"You're the woman who just spoke to my son?""
"Yes.""
"Why did you wait eleven years?""
Rachel began crying.
"Because Daniel threatened my family.""
Marcus looked at Ethan.
"Tell me what happened.""
Rachel took a breath.
"I worked at St. Mary's Hospital. Eleven years ago, I was assigned to Eleanor's medical team. I was also pregnant at the time.""
Marcus frowned.
"What does that have to do with Ethan?""
"Daniel was having an affair with me.""
Ethan closed his eyes.
Rachel continued.
"When I became pregnant, he promised he would take responsibility. But he didn't want the scandal to affect his business partnership with your father.""
Marcus gripped his phone.
"So he used my wife?""
"He used everyone.""
Rachel's voice trembled.
"After Ethan was born, Daniel arranged for the hospital records to be changed. He convinced Eleanor that Ethan was her biological child. He told me my baby had died.""
Ethan looked up.
"What?""
Rachel continued.
"I didn't find out the truth until months later. I found documents proving that the newborn assigned to Eleanor's room wasn't the baby I had delivered.""
Eleanor began crying.
Marcus stared at the floor.
"Why didn't you go to the police?""
"I tried.""
"And?""
"Daniel had already paid someone to destroy the original records. He also had evidence that could ruin my family. He told me if I spoke, Ethan would disappear.""
Ethan stepped closer.
"Did you ever see me?""
Rachel was silent.
Then she whispered:
"Once.""
Ethan's face crumpled.
"Where?""
"Outside your school. You were six years old. You were playing football with your friends.""
She began sobbing.
"I wanted to run toward you. I wanted to tell you I was your mother. But Daniel's men were watching.""
Ethan turned away.
Marcus put a hand on his shoulder.
"Keep going," he told Rachel.
"There is something else.""
"What?""
"Daniel didn't just change the birth records. He arranged the inheritance documents.""
Marcus frowned.
"Which documents?""
"The Cole family trust. Your grandfather's original will named the firstborn male descendant as the primary beneficiary.""
Marcus looked at Ethan.
Rachel continued.
"Daniel believed that if Ethan was legally recognized as your son, he could eventually control the trust through him.""
Marcus shook his head.
"Why would he do that?""
"Because Daniel had no legitimate claim to the inheritance. He needed a child who could inherit under your father's original conditions.""
Ethan whispered:
"So he used me.""
Rachel cried harder.
"Yes.""
Marcus looked at the phone.
"Where is Daniel now?""
"I don't know. But I have something he wants.""
"What?""
"The original hospital ledger.""
Daniel Reeves immediately stepped forward.
"Do you still have it?""
"Yes. I kept it hidden.""
Marcus looked at Ethan.
"Can you bring it to us?""
Rachel hesitated.
"I can. But I won't come alone.""
"That's fine.""
"And there's another thing. Vanessa needs to be there.""
Every face turned toward me.
I felt my stomach drop.
Marcus looked at the phone.
"Why?""
Rachel's answer was immediate.
"Because she was the person who brought me the money.""
My mouth went dry.
Marcus slowly turned.
"What money?""
Rachel continued.
"Seven years ago, Vanessa came to my apartment with fifty thousand dollars. She told me the baby had been placed with a loving family and that I should disappear.""
Ethan looked at me.
I couldn't meet his eyes.
Marcus's voice became dangerously quiet.
"Did you pay her?""
I swallowed.
"I was following Robert's instructions.""
"Did you?""
"Yes.""
Marcus looked away.
Rachel continued.
"But that's not the worst part.""
I closed my eyes.
"Rachel, please.""
Her voice trembled.
"Vanessa told me the baby was dead.""
Ethan stepped backward.
Marcus looked at me.
"You knew Rachel was his mother?""
I began crying.
"I didn't know she was his biological mother.""
Rachel spoke again.
"You knew enough to lie.""
The call ended shortly afterward.
Marcus stood in silence.
Then he looked at me.
"How many times?""
I wiped my face.
"What?""
"How many times have you lied to me?""
I shook my head.
"I don't know.""
"Did you know Daniel was Ethan's father?""
"No.""
"Did you know Eleanor wasn't his biological mother?""
"No.""
"Did you know the adoption records were falsified?""
I hesitated.
Marcus laughed bitterly.
"Of course.""
I stepped toward him.
"Marcus, I was trying to survive.""
He looked at me.
"And what about everyone else?""
I had no answer.
An hour later, we met Rachel at a small private conference room in Daniel Reeves's office.
She arrived carrying a leather document case.
She looked older than the photograph, with tired eyes and trembling hands.
Ethan stood as soon as she entered.
For several seconds, they simply stared at each other.
Then Rachel whispered:
"You're so much like him.""
Ethan frowned.
"Like who?""
"Daniel.""
He looked away.
Rachel placed the case on the table.
Inside were original hospital records, payment receipts, and a sealed envelope.
Marcus opened the first document.
His face changed.
"These records show the infant registered as Eleanor's child was transferred from another hospital.""
Rachel nodded.
"That was me.""
Marcus examined the next page.
It contained a handwritten note from Daniel.
*If Marcus discovers the truth, eliminate the problem before the boy turns twenty-five.*
Ethan stared at the words.
"Eliminate me?""
Rachel nodded through tears.
"Daniel was afraid you'd discover the trust documents.""
Marcus immediately reached for his phone.
But Rachel stopped him.
"Wait.""
She removed the final document.
It was a recent bank transfer.
A payment of two million dollars.
The recipient's name was visible.
*VANESSA COLE.*
I stumbled backward.
Marcus looked at me.
"Two million?""
I shook my head.
"I never received that money.""
Rachel pointed to the account details.
"The payment was made three days ago.""
Marcus examined the final line.
The money had been transferred from an offshore account.
But the destination account belonged to someone else.
Someone whose name none of us expected.
*Eleanor Cole.*
Eleanor stared at the document.
"That's impossible.""
Rachel nodded.
"Because Mrs. Cole never authorized it.""
Marcus looked toward Daniel Reeves.
"Who accessed her account?""
Daniel examined the transaction.
Then his face went pale.
"Marcus...""
"What?""
Daniel pointed to the authorization code.
"This transfer was approved using a biometric verification linked to Eleanor's medical identity.""
Eleanor gripped the arms of her chair.
"I never approved anything.""
Daniel swallowed.
"Someone used her identity.""
Marcus looked at the document again.
Then he turned toward me.
"Vanessa, why is your name connected to this payment?""
I shook my head.
"I don't know.""
But Rachel had gone completely still.
She was staring at the bank's authorization page.
Then she slowly raised her eyes toward me.
"That's not your name," she whispered.
I frowned.
"What?""
Rachel pointed to the account holder information.
"The recipient isn't Vanessa Cole.""
Marcus leaned forward.
"Who is it?""
Rachel's voice broke.
"It's Victoria Lane.""
The room went silent.
My old identity.
The name I had buried seven years earlier.
The name I had sworn never to use again.
Then Rachel opened the final attachment.
It contained a photograph of the person who had personally authorized the transfer.
A photograph taken inside a private bank.
And standing beside the teller was Daniel Cole.
Alive.
Smiling.
Holding a passport.
But the passport wasn't issued under his real name.
It carried a name that made Marcus stagger backward.
*Marcus Cole.*
My husband stared at the photograph.
Then he whispered:
"He's been using my identity.""
Ethan picked up the document.
He examined the passport photograph more closely.
And suddenly, he noticed something else.
The date of issue.
Three days before Marcus's supposed brother died.
Ethan looked at his father.
"There's something wrong with this timeline.""
Marcus turned.
"What?""
Ethan pointed to the date.
"Uncle Daniel didn't fake his death six years ago.""
He looked at everyone in the room.
"Someone killed him six years ago.""
A terrible silence followed.
Then Ethan turned the page.
May you like
And found the name of the person who had signed the death certificate.
*Marcus Cole.*
