Chapter 6: The Man Behind Everything
Claire put the call on speaker.
Nobody moved.
Robert's voice sounded calm, almost cheerful.
"Are you all together?""
Marcus stepped forward.
"Robert.""
There was a pause.
Then a quiet chuckle.
"Marcus. It's been a long time.""
Marcus clenched his jaw.
"Where are you?""
"Somewhere you can't reach me.""
"You're going to answer for what you did to my family.""
"Your family?""
Robert laughed.
"That's an interesting choice of words.""
Marcus looked at the phone.
"Did you fake Eleanor's death?""
"I handled a difficult situation.""
"Did you take my daughter?""
"I arranged her placement with a good family.""
Claire's face twisted.
"You sold me?""
Robert sighed.
"Please don't use emotional language. Your adoptive parents loved you.""
"They weren't my parents.""
"They raised you.""
"They were lied to!""
Robert fell silent.
Then he said something that made Claire grip the phone tighter.
"Your biological mother wasn't the only person who was lied to.""
Eleanor leaned forward.
"What does that mean?""
Robert's voice became softer.
"Ask Marcus why he never noticed the missing money.""
Marcus frowned.
"What money?""
"The money that disappeared from your company during the years after Eleanor's accident.""
Marcus looked at Daniel's name on his phone.
"Robert, I know about the withdrawals.""
"Do you?""
A short laugh followed.
"Then you should know they didn't begin seven years ago.""
Marcus went still.
Robert continued.
"They began long before the accident. Someone had been moving money out of your company for years. Someone you trusted.""
Marcus looked at me.
I shook my head.
"No.""
Robert chuckled again.
"Vanessa, don't pretend you were the mastermind. You were only the person I paid to sign documents.""
Ethan stepped forward.
"Tell us who planned the accident.""
Robert ignored him.
"Marcus, you always believed your first marriage was perfect. But you never understood how vulnerable your company was. Eleanor knew too much about the financial records.""
Marcus stared at the phone.
"What did you do to her?""
"Nothing that wasn't necessary.""
Eleanor began trembling.
"You told me Marcus had abandoned me.""
Robert sighed.
"I told you what you needed to hear.""
"You kept me away from my son.""
"And you survived. You're welcome.""
Ethan lunged toward the phone.
"You're a monster!""
Marcus caught his arm.
"Don't. Let him talk.""
Robert laughed.
"Still playing the protective father, I see.""
Marcus's voice dropped.
"Why did you target my family?""
There was a long pause.
Then Robert answered.
"Because your father made a promise to mine. A promise he never kept.""
Marcus frowned.
"My father?""
"Your family's wealth wasn't built entirely by your father, Marcus. There were partners. Investors.
Agreements. And one very important inheritance.""
Marcus looked confused.
Robert continued.
"Your grandfather left a substantial trust to be divided between his direct descendants. Your father changed the terms before his death.""
Marcus shook his head.
"I inherited the company legally.""
"Of course you did. But you inherited something else, too. A trust that was supposed to belong to your children.""
I watched Marcus's expression change.
Robert's voice became almost playful.
"Your first wife knew about it. That's why I needed her out of the way. And your daughter? She was the reason the entire arrangement had to be changed.""
Claire looked at Marcus.
"What arrangement?""
Robert answered before anyone else could.
"Your daughter was the rightful beneficiary of a separate family trust. A trust worth nearly forty million dollars.""
Claire stumbled backward.
"Forty million?""
Eleanor closed her eyes.
Marcus looked furious.
"Where is that money?""
"Safe.""
"Where?""
"Not where you think.""
Marcus gripped the phone.
"I'm going to find you.""
"You should be more concerned about your wife.""
He ended the call.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Marcus turned toward me.
"How much did he pay you?""
I looked down.
"Fifty thousand.""
"To take my daughter?""
I shook my head.
"To deliver her to the adoptive family. He told me she had been abandoned.""
"How much did he pay you to marry me?""
I looked up.
The question cut deeper than I expected.
"Nothing.""
Marcus gave a short, bitter laugh.
"Nothing?""
"I loved you.""
He stared at me.
"Did you?""
"Yes.""
"Then why did you lie?""
I felt tears gathering.
"Because I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
"Of losing everything.""
Marcus looked toward Eleanor.
"Everything you stole from my family?""
I couldn't answer.
Daniel arrived twenty minutes later with two security officers and a folder of documents.
He listened to everything before speaking.
"Marcus, there's something else you should know.""
Marcus turned.
"What now?""
Daniel opened the folder.
"Robert's company records show that the three hundred thousand dollars withdrawn yesterday wasn't taken from your personal investment account.""
Marcus frowned.
"What?""
"It came from the dormant family trust.""
Claire stepped closer.
"Is that the same trust Robert mentioned?""
Daniel nodded.
"And there's a problem.""
He placed a document on the table.
"Someone recently activated the trust using a power of attorney.""
Marcus stared at the signature.
"Who authorized this?""
Daniel pointed to the bottom.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
My signature.
Again.
But this time, the document was dated two weeks before my wedding.
Marcus looked at me.
"Did you sign this?""
I shook my head.
"No.""
Daniel adjusted his glasses.
"There's a second issue. The document identifies Vanessa as the authorized representative, but it also lists another person as the ultimate beneficiary.""
"Who?"" Marcus demanded.
Daniel turned the page.
The name was printed in bold letters.
*LILY COLE.*
Claire looked at Marcus.
"That's me.""
Daniel nodded.
"Yes. But the trust was never intended to be transferred to Claire directly until she reached twenty-five. The document appears to have been designed to bypass that restriction.""
Marcus stared at the papers.
"Who benefits?""
Daniel hesitated.
Then he pointed to another line.
"The person who submitted the transfer request.""
Nobody spoke.
Because the name wasn't mine.
It wasn't Robert's.
It wasn't Marcus's.
It was Ethan's.
Marcus slowly turned toward his son.
"Ethan?""
Ethan looked genuinely stunned.
"What?""
Daniel showed him the document.
"Your digital identification was used to authorize the transfer.""
Ethan shook his head.
"I didn't sign that.""
Marcus's expression hardened.
"How did someone get your information?""
"I don't know!""
I watched them argue.
For the first time that morning, I felt something close to relief.
The attention had shifted.
The evidence was no longer pointing only at me.
Then Daniel spoke again.
"There's one more thing.""
He removed a printed email from the folder.
"It was sent from Ethan's account at 2:13 A.M. last night.""
Ethan stepped forward.
"That's impossible. I was home.""
Daniel read the message aloud.
"'The money is ready. The documents are in place. Once Marcus discovers the truth about Vanessa, we can remove the remaining obstacle.''"
Marcus looked at his son.
"What obstacle?""
Ethan's face went white.
"I didn't write that.""
Daniel turned the page.
The email included an attachment.
A photograph.
It showed Ethan standing outside Marcus's study two nights earlier, holding a small black bag.
Marcus stared at it.
"What was in the bag?""
Ethan looked at his father.
Then he looked at me.
His expression changed.
"That's what I've been trying to tell you.""
Marcus stepped closer.
"Tell me what?""
Ethan swallowed.
"I found something in Dad's study. Something Vanessa didn't know I had.""
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small USB drive.
"I found the original recording of the night Mom disappeared.""
Marcus took it.
"Why didn't you show me before?""
Ethan's eyes filled with tears.
"Because I wasn't sure you could handle what was on it.""
He looked directly at me.
"And because the person who ordered Mom's disappearance wasn't Robert Hale.""
He paused.
Then he whispered:
"It was someone in this family.""
Marcus stared at the USB drive.
"Who?""
Ethan looked at his father.
May you like
And slowly, he answered.
"Your brother, Dad. Daniel Cole.""
