Chapter 5: The Missing Daughter
Marcus sat down on the nearest garden bench.
For the first time since I had known him, he looked old.
Not tired.
Not stressed.
Broken.
"Our daughter?"" he whispered.
Eleanor nodded.
"Her name was Lily.""
Marcus stared at her.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"I tried.""
Her voice trembled.
"After the accident, I woke up in a hospital. They told me Lily had died during delivery complications. They said you had authorized everything.""
Marcus covered his mouth.
"I never received a call.""
"I know.""
"Never a photograph. Never a death certificate.""
Eleanor looked toward the sky.
"Because she wasn't dead.""
Ethan moved closer.
"Mom found out six months ago.""
Marcus looked at him.
"How?""
"She remembered something. A woman carrying a baby. A red blanket. A bracelet with a tiny silver moon.""
Eleanor nodded.
"I remembered the bracelet. I had chosen it myself.""
Marcus looked at me.
I knew what he was thinking.
The photograph showed me holding a newborn wrapped in a red blanket.
A silver moon bracelet was visible around the baby's wrist.
"Vanessa," he said.
I shook my head.
"I don't know anything about this.""
Ethan took another photograph from his pocket.
"Then maybe you can explain this.""
It showed a woman entering a private residence with a baby carrier.
The woman's face was partially visible.
But the red dress was unmistakable.
Mine.
I had worn it seven years earlier at Robert's country house.
Marcus stared at the photograph.
"Where was this taken?""
"Robert's property. The same week Lily disappeared.""
I forced a smile.
"Photographs can be manipulated.""
Ethan shook his head.
"I checked the original metadata. The picture came from a camera recovered from Robert's old office.""
Marcus stood.
"Where is Robert now?""
"He's in Boston," Ethan replied.
"At least, that's where his last registered address is.""
Marcus immediately called Daniel.
"Find Robert Hale. I don't care what it costs.""
Then he turned to me.
"Did you take my daughter?""
I felt my throat close.
"No.""
"Did you know she was alive?""
"No.""
Eleanor looked at me.
"You held her.""
I shook my head.
"Stop.""
"You held my baby while I was unconscious.""
"Stop!""
My voice came out louder than I intended.
The nurse near the entrance turned toward us.
Marcus stepped between me and Eleanor.
"Answer the question.""
I looked at him.
And suddenly, I remembered the little girl.
The tiny fingers.
The soft crying.
The silver bracelet.
I had been twenty-six years old, desperate for money, and willing to do almost anything to escape the life I had been living.
Robert had offered me fifty thousand dollars to sign a few documents and deliver a baby to a woman in another state.
He said the child's mother had abandoned her.
He said the father was dangerous.
He said I was helping save a child.
I had believed him.
Or perhaps I had simply wanted the money badly enough not to ask questions.
"Vanessa?""
Marcus's voice pulled me back.
I looked down.
"I never hurt her.""
Ethan stepped closer.
"Where is she?""
"I don't know.""
"Where is my sister?""
"I said I don't know!""
Ethan grabbed the edge of the bench.
"You expect me to believe you carried her away and never wondered where she went?""
I stared at him.
"Your father gave me a life. I was trying to protect it.""
Marcus looked horrified.
"Protect it from what?""
I didn't answer.
Then a voice spoke behind us.
"From the truth.""
We all turned.
A woman in a dark green coat stood near the garden entrance.
She was in her early thirties, with shoulder-length brown hair and a small silver pendant around her neck.
Marcus frowned.
"Who are you?""
The woman walked forward.
"My name is Claire Bennett.""
Eleanor stared at her.
"Claire?""
The woman nodded.
"Hello, Mrs. Cole.""
Ethan looked confused.
"How do you know my mother?""
Claire opened her handbag and removed a small photograph.
It showed a baby wrapped in a red blanket.
The same baby from the other photographs.
"I was adopted when I was three months old," she said.
"My adoptive parents told me my biological family had died.""
Marcus looked at the photograph.
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
"But six months ago, I received a letter from someone claiming to know my birth mother.""
She turned toward Eleanor.
"I took a DNA test.""
Eleanor covered her mouth.
Claire knelt beside her wheelchair.
"The results confirmed it.""
Eleanor began crying.
"You're my Lily.""
Claire nodded.
"Yes.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"You're my daughter?""
Claire looked at him.
"I think so.""
He reached out, then stopped.
He seemed afraid that touching her might make the moment disappear.
"I'm sorry," he whispered.
Claire shook her head.
"You didn't know.""
Marcus looked at me.
"But somebody did.""
Claire stood.
"I didn't come here just to meet my family.""
She reached into her handbag again and removed a folded legal document.
"This is a copy of my original adoption file.""
Marcus took it.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then he stopped.
"What is this?""
Claire pointed to the bottom.
"Look at the witness signature.""
I stared at the document.
My name was there.
Not Vanessa Cole.
Not Victoria Lane.
My original name.
*Vanessa Miller.*
Marcus slowly raised his eyes.
"You signed her adoption papers?""
I couldn't answer.
Claire continued.
"My adoptive parents told me the woman who brought me to them was a nurse. But when I found the original file, I discovered something else.""
She placed another photograph on the bench.
It showed me holding Claire as a baby.
Beside me stood Robert Hale.
But the photograph had something I hadn't seen before.
On the back, someone had written a date and a short message.
Claire read it aloud.
"'Payment received. Child transferred. Next phase: Cole estate.''"
Marcus stared at me.
"What next phase?""
I looked at the ground.
Claire took one final document from her bag.
"This is the reason I came.""
It was a copy of an insurance policy.
The beneficiary was Marcus Cole.
The insured person was Eleanor Cole.
And the policy had been created only weeks before the accident.
Marcus's expression changed.
"Who arranged this?""
Claire turned the page.
A second signature appeared.
Robert Hale's.
But underneath it was another name.
*Vanessa Miller.*
Marcus stepped backward.
The woman who had supposedly helped him rebuild his life had been connected to his first wife's disappearance, his daughter's adoption, and an insurance policy he had never known existed.
"Tell me the truth," he said.
I looked at him.
And for the first time, I understood that crying wouldn't save me.
"Robert told me Eleanor was going to die anyway.""
Marcus's face hardened.
"What?""
"I didn't know he was planning an accident.""
Eleanor grabbed the arms of her wheelchair.
"An accident?""
I looked at her.
"I swear I didn't know.""
Marcus moved closer.
"What accident, Vanessa?""
Before I could answer, Claire's phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Then her expression changed.
"That's strange.""
"What?"" Ethan asked.
Claire answered.
"Hello?""
A man's voice came through the speaker.
Even from several feet away, I recognized it.
Robert Hale.
"Claire, sweetheart. I was hoping you'd find your way home.""
Claire went pale.
May you like
Then Robert added:
"Now that you've met your family, perhaps it's time someone told you what really happened to your mother.""
