Chapter 9: The Last Lie
I returned home with one thought.
My mother knew more.
Not everything.
But more.
And this time, I wasn’t going to let her protect me with silence.
She was sitting in the living room when I arrived.
She looked at my face.
And immediately started crying.
“You met him.””
“Yes.””
She nodded slowly.
“What did he tell you?””
“The truth.””
Her eyes closed.
“Finally.””
I stood there.
“Mom.””
She looked up.
“Who protected Ethan?””
The question changed everything.
Her face went completely still.
“Robert…”
“Don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“I can’t do this anymore.””
She looked down.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“That’s what everyone says.””
The silence hurt.
“Tell me.””
My mother took a long breath.
Then she whispered:
“Your father’s death wasn’t an accident.””
I already knew.
But hearing it from her made it real.
“What happened?””
She wiped her tears.
“Michael found out Ethan was stealing from him.””
My stomach tightened.
“He confronted him.””
“Yes.””
“And?””
“Ethan panicked.””
“Did he kill him?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“He pushed him.””
My breathing stopped.
“Pushed him?””
“During the argument.””
My mother looked devastated.
“Michael fell.””
I closed my eyes.
“But he survived.””
She nodded.
“He did.””
“Then what?””
Her voice broke.
“Ethan called me.””
I froze.
“You?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“He told me Michael was hurt.””
“And?””
“I went there.””
My heart started pounding.
“What did you see?””
My mother covered her mouth.
“He was alive.””
The room spun.
“He was alive?””
“Yes.””
“Then why…”
“Because Ethan begged me.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“He said his life would be over.””
My hands shook.
“Mom.””
“I was scared.””
The words came out like a confession.
“I was scared of losing everything.””
I stepped back.
“And Michael?””
She cried.
“I thought he was going to die anyway.””
I couldn’t speak.
“But he didn’t.””
“No.””
My mother looked at me.
“He lived long enough to understand what happened.””
A horrible silence filled the room.
“What did you do?””
She looked away.
“I called an ambulance.””
I waited.
“But?””
She closed her eyes.
“But I didn’t tell them Ethan was there.””
My heart broke.
Not because she lied.
Because I understood.
She chose fear.
And someone paid for it.
“Did Michael know?””
“Yes.””
“What did he say?””
My mother started crying harder.
“He told me to take care of you.””
I looked away.
The pain was unbearable.
“He forgave you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because that was who Michael was.””
I sat down.
Everything was falling apart.
Ethan.
Danielle.
Daniel.
My mother.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone had made choices.
And somehow, I was the person left standing in the middle.
Then my phone rang.
The police.
I answered.
“Robert Hayes?””
“Yes.””
“We need you to come down to the station.””
“Why?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because Ethan has requested to speak with you.””
I looked at my mother.
She shook her head.
“No.””
I knew what she meant.
She was afraid.
But I wasn’t the same person who ignored the bruises anymore.
“I’m going.””
At the station, Ethan sat behind the glass.
He looked tired.
Older.
Human.
That almost made it worse.
I picked up the phone.
“Why?””
He looked at me.
“Because you deserve the final truth.””
“I already know enough.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You know what everyone wants you to know.””
My jaw tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan leaned closer.
“It means your mother isn’t the only person who chose herself.””
I stared at him.
“Say what you mean.””
He looked directly into my eyes.
“Michael didn’t forgive your mother because he was a saint.””
I said nothing.
“He forgave her because he knew the truth.””
“What truth?””
Ethan smiled sadly.
“The truth about why Daniel left.””
My heart stopped.
“What are you talking about?””
Ethan leaned back.
“Ask your mother why Daniel disappeared.””
I felt the old anger return.
“No more secrets.””
Ethan looked at the clock.
Then at me.
“Then go home.””
“Why?””
“Because your mother is about to tell you.””
His smile faded.
“And when she does, you’ll finally understand.””
“Understand what?””
His answer was barely a whisper.
“Why she spent your entire life making sure you never found your real father.””
I stared at him.
And for the first time…
I wondered if my mother’s biggest lie wasn’t about my father.
It was about why she kept him away.
