Chapter 3: The Secret Danielle Buried

I didn’t sleep after Claire’s phone call.

I sat on the couch until sunrise, staring at the wedding photo hanging above the fireplace.

Danielle and me.

Smiling.

Happy.

At least, I thought we were.

Funny how a single truth can change every memory you have.

The photo didn’t look romantic anymore.

It looked like evidence.

At seven in the morning, I called Claire back.

She answered immediately.

“You called.””

“I need you to tell me everything.””

There was silence.

Then she sighed.

“I was hoping you’d never have to hear it.””

“Claire.””

“Danielle was married before you.””

I frowned.

“She told me she had been engaged once.””

“She wasn’t engaged.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“She was married.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

“To who?””

“My brother.””

I stood up.

“What?””

“My brother’s name was Michael.””

I walked toward the window.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

“Because Michael disappeared.””

The word hit me.

“Disappeared?””

Claire’s voice became quieter.

“He died.””

I closed my eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

“He died three years ago.””

I calculated.

Three years.

The exact time Danielle entered my life.

“What happened?””

Claire didn’t answer immediately.

“Officially, it was an accident.””

“And unofficially?””

“Unofficially, my brother was planning to leave her.””

The silence between us felt heavy.

“Why?””

“Because he found out she had been lying about money.””

I sat down.

“What kind of lies?””

“She was secretly draining his accounts.””

I felt sick.

“But the police investigated?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“They couldn’t prove anything.””

My mind raced.

“How did you find out?””

“Because Michael left evidence.””

I looked at the wedding photo again.

“What evidence?””

“His journal.””

The room went quiet.

“Where is it?””

“I have it.””

“Claire, I need to see it.””

“I know.””

She hesitated.

“But before you do, there’s something else.””

“What?””

“My brother wasn’t the only person who warned people about Danielle.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“She had a pattern.””

The word stayed in my head.

Pattern.

Not accident.

Not mistake.

Pattern.

That afternoon, I met Claire at a small coffee shop across town.

She looked nothing like I imagined.

I expected someone angry.

Bitter.

Instead, she looked tired.

The kind of tired that comes from carrying something heavy for too long.

She placed a worn notebook on the table.

“This is Michael’s journal.””

I touched the cover.

“You’re sure?””

“Yes.””

I opened it.

The first pages were normal.

Work.

Bills.

Daily thoughts.

Then I reached a page dated two months before his death.

My hands stopped.

The handwriting was rushed.

“Danielle is not who everyone thinks she is.””

I kept reading.

“She knows how to make people feel guilty. She knows how to make herself look innocent. If something happens to me, I need someone to know I was afraid.””

I looked up.

“Did you show this to the police?””

“Yes.””

“And they ignored it?””

“They said he was stressed.””

I closed the journal.

A horrible realization settled over me.

Danielle had spent years perfecting one skill.

Making people doubt the truth.

When I returned home, my mother was sitting outside.

She looked at me carefully.

“You found something.””

I nodded.

“I’m sorry.””

She frowned.

“For what?””

“For not listening.””

She reached for my hand.

“Robert.””

“I should have protected you.””

“You did.””

“Too late.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice was gentle.

“You finally did.””

Before I could answer, my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Danielle.

I opened it.

Robert, I know what Claire told you.

My heartbeat increased.

Another message appeared.

She’s lying.

Then another.

You don’t know the real story.

I stared at the screen.

Then the final message arrived.

The truth about Michael is something only I can explain.

I looked at my mother.

Then back at the phone.

For a moment, I considered ignoring it.

But I knew I couldn’t.

Because if Danielle had been lying about Michael…

If she had been lying about everything…

I needed to know how deep the deception went.

I typed one sentence.

Where are you?

Her reply came instantly.

I knew you’d want answers.

Then an address appeared.

And beneath it, one final line:

Come alone, Robert. Because the person who betrayed you first isn’t who you think.
