Chapter 6: The House of Old Secrets
The old house looked exactly the same.
That was the worst part.
The peeling paint.
The broken fence.
The tree where Ethan and I used to hang our bikes.
Everything looked harmless.
But I knew better now.
Some places hold memories.
Others hold evidence.
I stepped onto the porch.
The door opened before I knocked.
Ethan stood there.
Older.
Tired.
But still wearing the same expression I had trusted my entire life.
A calm smile.
The smile of someone who believed he was always smarter than everyone else.
“Robert.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
He sighed.
“Come inside.””
“No.””
His smile faded.
“Still stubborn.””
“Why did you do it?””
He looked at me.
Not confused.
Not shocked.
Like he had been expecting this moment.
“Which part?””
My stomach twisted.
“All of it.””
He stepped aside.
“Then you should come in.””
I walked inside.
The house smelled like dust and old wood.
The living room looked frozen in time.
Ethan sat down.
I stayed standing.
“You always were the good one.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“You believed people were better than they were.””
“And you used that.””
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“You’re admitting it?””
He smiled faintly.
“You want the truth, right?””
“Yes.””
“Then stop pretending you can handle a simple answer.””
My fists tightened.
“Try me.””
He looked around the room.
“When our father died, what did you get?””
I stared.
“What?””
“You got sympathy.””
“That’s what this is about?””
“No.””
His eyes hardened.
“You got love.””
Silence.
“You became the person everyone protected.””
I shook my head.
“You’re blaming me because people cared about me?””
“I’m saying people never saw me.””
There it was.
The wound beneath everything.
The excuse.
“I was your brother.””
“You were always the favorite.””
“That’s not true.””
“It doesn’t matter if it’s true.””
He leaned forward.
“It’s what I believed.””
I stared at him.
“You destroyed people because you felt ignored?””
“No.””
He smiled.
“I destroyed people because it worked.””
The words made my skin crawl.
“Michael.””
“Yes.””
“Danielle.””
“Yes.””
“My mother.””
His expression changed slightly.
“She was collateral.””
I couldn’t believe what I heard.
“Collateral?””
“She was never supposed to be part of this.””
“Then why?””
“Because she started asking questions.””
I stepped closer.
“You hurt my mother because she noticed?””
“She was smarter than I expected.””
I felt anger burning through me.
“You used Danielle.””
“Yes.””
“You made her think she was in control.””
“Yes.””
“And me?””
Ethan looked directly at me.
“You were the final piece.””
I felt sick.
“What does that mean?””
He stood.
“You had everything.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
He walked closer.
“House. Career. Family trust. A clean reputation.””
His voice lowered.
“You were the perfect person to blame.””
My heart stopped.
“For what?””
He smiled.
“For everything.””
Before I could answer, a sound came from behind me.
The front door opened.
I turned.
Police officers entered.
And behind them…
Danielle.
My eyes widened.
“What are you doing here?””
She looked at Ethan.
Then at me.
“Ending this.””
Ethan laughed.
“You brought her?””
I looked between them.
“You two planned this?””
Danielle shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice was steady.
“For once, I’m doing something without him controlling me.””
Ethan’s expression darkened.
“You think they’ll believe you?””
Danielle looked at me.
“No.””
Then she looked back at him.
“But they’ll believe the recording.””
My heart stopped.
“What recording?””
Danielle reached into her coat.
She held up a small device.
“The one Ethan made the mistake of leaving behind.””
Ethan’s face changed.
And for the first time…
He looked afraid.
Danielle pressed a button.
A voice filled the room.
Ethan’s voice.
Confessing everything.
Every plan.
Every lie.
Every person he destroyed.
The house went silent.
And as the officers moved toward him, Ethan looked at me.
Not angry.
Not scared.
Just disappointed.
Like I had betrayed him.
Then he whispered:
“Robert… you still don’t know the worst part.””
The officers grabbed his arms.
I looked at him.
“What?””
Ethan smiled.
“Ask your mother who your real father was.””
May you like
