Chapter 8: The Friend Who Knew Everything
I didn’t believe Daniel.
Not immediately.
Because some betrayals are too large for the mind to accept.
My father.
My sister.
My mother hiding the truth.
Those were already cracks in the foundation of my life.
But my best friend?
That felt impossible.
“Say his name again.””
Daniel sighed.
“Marcus.””
I sat down.
Marcus.
My closest friend since college.
The person who helped me start my first business.
The person who stood beside me when nobody believed I could build anything.
The person who gave a speech at my wedding.
The person who held my daughter’s first ultrasound picture.
No.
There had to be another explanation.
“He wouldn’t.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Arthur.””
“He wouldn’t do this.””
“I have the evidence.””
I closed my eyes.
“What evidence?””
“Bank transfers.””
My stomach tightened.
“From who?””
“Your father.””
“How much?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Over three years?””
“Yes.””
“Almost $200,000.””
I felt numb.
Two hundred thousand dollars.
The number itself barely mattered anymore.
It was the pattern.
Everyone around me had a price.
Everyone except Clara.
I went to Marcus’s office that afternoon.
He looked surprised to see me.
“Arthur?””
I walked inside.
He smiled.
“Everything okay?””
I looked around.
His office was exactly what I expected.
Successful.
Comfortable.
The kind of success we had dreamed about when we were younger.
“How long?””
His smile faded.
“What?””
“How long have you been helping my father?””
The silence answered before he did.
He slowly closed the door.
“Who told you?””
I laughed.
“That’s your first question?””
Marcus looked down.
“Arthur…”
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“I want to hear you say it.””
He sighed.
“Your father needed help.””
I stared at him.
“Help doing what?””
“He was trying to protect the family.””
I felt something break inside me.
Everyone used the same excuse.
Family.
Always family.
“He tried to steal my company.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You’re seeing it wrong.””
“No.””
My voice became sharper.
“I’m finally seeing it clearly.””
Marcus sat down.
“You don’t understand what your father went through.””
I almost couldn’t believe him.
“I paid his debts.””
“You had opportunities because of him.””
“I built my own company.””
“With his connections.””
“With his reputation.””
“With his lies.””
Marcus looked away.
That was when I knew.
He wasn’t defending my father because he believed him.
He was defending him because he benefited.
“Why?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
“Why would you do this?””
Finally, he said:
“Because your father promised me something.””
I stared.
“What?””
“A partnership.””
There it was.
The truth.
Everyone wanted something.
My father wanted control.
Vanessa wanted ownership.
Marcus wanted a piece.
“And what did you have to do?””
Marcus was silent.
“Tell me.””
He looked at me.
“I gave him information.””
My heart sank.
“What information?””
“Company plans.””
“Financial reports.””
“Future projects.””
Every word felt like another cut.
“You gave him my private information.””
“I thought he would make things right.””
I shook my head.
“You didn’t think.””
Marcus looked hurt.
“I was trying to help.””
“No.””
I walked toward the door.
“You were trying to profit.””
Before I left, Marcus said:
“Arthur.””
I stopped.
“You think Clara is different?””
I turned slowly.
“What?””
He swallowed.
“Your father said she was the reason you changed.””
My blood went cold.
“What did you say?””
“He thought she was making you turn against the family.””
I stared at him.
Then I understood.
They didn’t hate Clara because she was difficult.
They hated her because she made me see clearly.
She was the first person who loved me without needing something.
And that made her dangerous to them.
When I returned home, Clara immediately knew something happened.
“What did Marcus do?””
I sat beside her.
“He helped them.””
She closed her eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
“Why are you sorry?””
“Because you keep losing people you thought were yours.””
That sentence hurt.
Because it was true.
But then she placed my hand against her stomach.
The baby moved.
A tiny kick.
A reminder.
Not everyone was gone.
“I spent years trying to protect people who would sacrifice me.””
I looked at her.
“But you never asked me for anything.””
Clara smiled.
“I asked you for one thing.””
“What?””
“To choose us.””
The next morning, Daniel arrived with the final piece of evidence.
He placed a folder on the table.
“This is what we were missing.””
I opened it.
Inside was a recording.
A conversation.
My father.
Vanessa.
Marcus.
Three voices.
Three people.
Planning everything.
I pressed play.
At first, there was only static.
Then my father’s voice.
“We just need Arthur to believe he has a choice.””
Vanessa laughed.
“He always thinks he’s saving someone.””
Marcus said:
“That’s why this works.””
My hands tightened.
Then my father spoke again.
“When he signs the transfer, everything returns to the family.””
A pause.
Then Vanessa asked:
“And Clara?””
The recording went silent for a second.
Then my father answered.
“Clara is temporary.””
I stopped breathing.
Because that was the moment I knew.
This was never about money.
They weren’t trying to take my company.
May you like
They were trying to erase my life.
And I was done letting them.
