Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Vacation

By seven the next morning, my phone was vibrating nonstop.

At first, I ignored it.

Then I saw the number.

My father.

Three missed calls.

My mother.

Five.

Vanessa.

Eleven.

I made coffee quietly while Clara sat at the kitchen table.

She looked tired.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

There was a difference.

Her hand rested on her stomach as she watched the sunlight move across the floor.

“You don’t have to do this alone,” she said.

I looked up.

“Do what?””

“Carry everyone.””

The words hit harder because they were true.

Before I could answer, my phone rang again.

Vanessa.

This time, Clara saw the screen.

“Are you going to answer?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

A minute later, a message appeared.

SECURITY WON’T LET US INTO THE AIRPORT LOUNGE.

Then another.

WHAT DID YOU DO?

Then my mother.

CALL ME RIGHT NOW.

Then my father.

FIX THIS BEFORE WE MISS OUR FLIGHT.

Clara read the messages.

“They really thought you would just fix it.””

I looked at the phone.

“They always do.””

A new message appeared.

Daniel.

I opened it.

Arthur, do not contact Vanessa yet.

I found something much bigger.

I called immediately.

Daniel answered on the second ring.

“Tell me you’re sitting down.””

I looked at Clara.

“I am.””

“Good. Because what I found changes everything.””

“What did you find?””

A pause.

Then papers moved on his end.

“Arthur, the documents Vanessa created were not random.””

“What does that mean?””

“She wasn’t trying to buy a vacation.””

I frowned.

“Then what was she doing?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“She was building a financial identity.””

I walked toward the window.

“I don’t understand.””

“Your sister has been presenting herself to vendors and lenders as someone with access to your company.””

My stomach tightened.

“She doesn’t.””

“I know.””

“Then why would anyone believe her?””

“Because someone helped her.””

The room became silent.

“Who?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

“Arthur, I need you to prepare yourself.””

I looked at Clara.

She was watching my face.

“Who?””

“Your father.””

For a moment, I thought I heard him wrong.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

Daniel continued.

“I traced several approvals. Your father used your company accounts as proof of family wealth. He told people you had given him financial authority.””

I closed my eyes.

Ten years.

Ten years of payments.

Ten years of believing my father was ashamed of needing help.

But he wasn’t ashamed.

He was using it.

“What exactly did he do?””

Daniel sighed.

“He used your name to secure business arrangements.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“How many?””

“That’s what I’m trying to determine.””

After the call ended, Clara reached for my hand.

“Arthur.””

I sat beside her.

“My father knew.””

She didn’t ask what I meant.

She understood.

“He knew everything.””

I nodded.

And then something painful became clear.

The dinner wasn’t the beginning.

It was the moment I finally noticed what had been happening for years.

My family didn’t see me as family.

They saw me as a resource.

Later that afternoon, I drove to my attorney’s office.

Daniel had prepared a stack of documents.

He placed them on the table.

“These are copies of transactions connected to your father.””

I flipped through them.

My name appeared everywhere.

Guarantees.

Approvals.

Financial statements.

But I hadn’t signed them.

“I never gave permission.””

“I know.””

“Then this is fraud.””

Daniel looked at me carefully.

“Yes.””

The word sat between us.

Heavy.

Real.

I thought about my mother laughing while Clara stood there soaked.

I thought about Vanessa smiling.

I thought about my father cutting his dinner while destroying my trust.

“What happens now?””

Daniel folded his hands.

“Now we stop reacting.””

“And?””

“We make sure they understand exactly what they’ve done.””

That evening, I returned home.

Clara was sitting on the couch.

She looked at me.

“Well?””

I sat beside her.

“My family has been using my name.””

She closed her eyes.

“I knew something was wrong.””

“I’m sorry.””

She looked at me.

“Stop apologizing for their choices.””

I looked down.

“I brought you into this.””

“No.””

Her voice was firm.

“You loved people who didn’t deserve it. That is not the same thing.””

I wanted to believe her.

But then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man spoke.

“Is this Arthur Bennett?””

“Yes.””

“This is Michael from the Mediterranean travel company.””

My heart sank.

“Yes?””

“There’s a problem.””

“What kind of problem?””

A pause.

Then he said:

“We received a second cancellation request.””

I stood.

“From who?””

The man hesitated.

Then answered.

“From someone using your wife’s name.””

I looked at Clara.

She was staring back.

“What?””

The man continued.

“The request says Clara Bennett no longer wants the trip to continue.””

My blood went cold.

May you like

Because Clara had never canceled anything.

And whoever did this had just started a new game.
