Chapter 6: The Name Hidden in the Contract

I read the sentence three times.

Then a fourth.

Because my mind refused to accept it.

My father didn’t save the company because he was afraid of losing it.

He saved it because he was afraid I would discover who originally owned it.

The words didn’t make sense.

Not immediately.

The company had always been my father’s.

That was the story.

The story everyone knew.

The story I grew up hearing.

My grandfather started the business.

My father expanded it.

I inherited the ambition.

That was the family history.

But the envelope suggested something else.

Something hidden.

I brought the paper inside.

Clara was waiting at the kitchen table.

“You’re shaking.””

I looked down.

She was right.

I hadn’t noticed.

“I think everything I know about my family is fake.””

Clara squeezed my hand.

“Then find the truth.””

The next morning, Daniel arrived with another folder.

He looked exhausted.

“I found something.””

I placed the envelope on the table.

“Before you say anything, read this.””

He did.

His expression changed instantly.

“Where did you get this?””

“Someone left it outside our house.””

Daniel looked worried.

“That’s not good.””

“Why?””

“Because whoever sent this knows what I’m investigating.””

I sat down.

“Daniel.””

He opened the folder.

“Your father’s company records.””

I looked at the pages.

“Those are from twenty years ago.””

“Yes.””

“What am I looking for?””

He pointed.

“Ownership.””

I scanned the document.

Then stopped.

A name appeared.

Not my father’s.

Not my grandfather’s.

Another name.

My mother’s.

I looked up.

“What?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your mother originally owned the majority shares.””

The room went silent.

“That’s impossible.””

“It’s not.””

“Why would she hide that?””

Daniel looked at me carefully.

“That’s what we need to find out.””

I thought about my mother standing at my door.

Her fear.

Her apology.

Her confession.

Maybe she wasn’t just a bystander.

Maybe she was part of the secret.

Later that day, I went to see her.

She opened the door and immediately knew why I was there.

“You found it.””

I stared at her.

“You knew.””

She looked away.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She stepped aside.

“Come in.””

We sat in the same living room where I had spent countless holidays.

The same room where my parents had celebrated success that wasn’t real.

“My father told me he built everything.””

My mother nodded.

“He did.””

“But the company was yours.””

She looked down.

“It was.””

“Why give it to him?””

She was quiet for a long time.

Then she said:

“Because I loved him.””

I almost laughed.

“That’s the reason?””

“No.””

Her eyes filled.

“It’s the mistake.””

She explained everything.

Years ago, before my father became successful, my mother had inherited money from her family.

She invested it.

She created the foundation of the company.

But my father had always been the public face.

The speaker.

The businessman.

The person everyone noticed.

Over time, he convinced her that transferring control would make things easier.

She trusted him.

Then the company grew.

And so did his ego.

“When did you realize?””

My mother looked at me.

“When he started acting like he built it alone.””

I felt sick.

“So when the company collapsed…”

“I could have taken control back.””

“But you didn’t.””

She shook her head.

“I was afraid.””

The same word.

Again.

Everyone was afraid.

And I was the one paying the price.

“Why let me believe I was saving Dad?””

My mother wiped her eyes.

“Because he said he would tell you.””

“And he didn’t.””

“No.””

I stood.

“Does Vanessa know?””

My mother froze.

That was enough.

“She knows.””

My mother whispered:

“Yes.””

Everything clicked.

Vanessa wasn’t just trying to steal from me.

She believed she was reclaiming something.

A company she thought belonged to her side of the family.

Except she had one problem.

She had no idea what my father had done.

“What did Dad promise her?””

My mother looked terrified.

“He promised Vanessa ownership.””

“Of what?””

She hesitated.

Then answered.

“Your company.””

I left my mother’s house with one thought repeating in my mind.

My family had spent ten years pretending I was saving them.

But the truth was much darker.

They had been preparing to replace me.

That night, Daniel sent me one final message.

Arthur, I found the original agreement between your father and Vanessa.

I opened the attachment.

The document loaded.

At the bottom was a signature.

Vanessa’s.

And underneath it, a sentence that made my blood run cold.

Upon transfer of ownership, Arthur Bennett will be removed from the company he created.

I stared at the words.

Then my phone rang.

It was my father.

I answered.

For the first time in my life, I didn’t hear authority in his voice.

I heard panic.

“Arthur.””

I said nothing.

“Where did you get those documents?””

My heart stopped.

Because he wasn’t asking if they were real.

He was asking how I found them.

I looked at the contract.

Then I whispered:

“Dad…”

A long silence followed.

May you like

Then he said:

“You were never supposed to know.””
