Chapter 6: The Message Hidden in the Walls
The photograph stayed on the desk for almost a minute.
Nobody touched it.
Nobody spoke.
It was strange how something so small could make an entire room feel unsafe.
A picture of a sleeping baby.
A harmless moment.
Except someone had been close enough to take it.
Someone had been inside their home.
Someone had watched Emma sleep.
Clara felt a wave of anger rise through the fear.
She looked at Adrian.
“What are you going to do?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
His eyes remained fixed on the photograph.
The man who had once walked into every room with confidence now looked like someone searching through the pieces of his own life.
Finally, he picked up his phone.
“I’m calling security.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
“No?””
She stood.
“If Vanessa knows we have this, calling security will only tell her we’re moving against her.””
Adrian stared.
“She threatened my daughter.””
“I know.””
“Then I’m supposed to do nothing?””
“No,” Evelyn said.
“You’re supposed to think.””
The words were harsh.
But Clara noticed something.
Evelyn wasn’t trying to control him.
She was trying to keep him alive.
Adrian looked away.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Olivia quietly asked:
“Is Emma in danger?””
The question broke something inside the room.
Because everyone had been talking about evidence.
Secrets.
Lies.
But Olivia had reduced everything to the one thing that mattered.
A child.
Clara knelt beside her.
“Emma is not alone.””
Olivia looked at her.
“But someone hurt her.””
Clara swallowed.
“Yes.””
The little girl looked down.
“I thought families were supposed to protect each other.””
Clara had no answer.
Because sometimes the people who shared your last name were the people you had to protect yourself from.
Adrian refused to let Vanessa know Evelyn was still in the house.
They moved carefully.
Quietly.
Like they were inside someone else’s home.
Because in a way, Clara realized, they were.
The house she had known for years had changed.
Every room held a question.
Every hallway felt like it was hiding something.
Evelyn stayed in Adrian’s office while Adrian checked the security system.
Clara remained with Emma.
The baby was awake now.
Completely unaware of the chaos surrounding her.
She grabbed Clara’s finger and smiled.
The simple gesture almost broke Clara’s heart.
Because this was what mattered.
Not the lies.
Not Vanessa’s games.
Emma.
A child who deserved to grow up knowing the truth.
“Clara.””
She turned.
Adrian stood in the doorway.
“She’s asleep again.””
He looked at Emma.
Then at Clara.
“I owe you an apology.””
Clara didn’t respond.
Not because she didn’t hear him.
Because she had waited so long to hear those words that now they felt strange.
“I believed her,” Adrian continued.
Clara looked down.
“Yes.””
“I should have listened.””
“Yes.””
His face tightened.
“I know sorry doesn’t fix that.””
“No.””
The honesty surprised him.
But Clara couldn’t pretend.
Not anymore.
“You looked at me and believed I could hurt her.””
Adrian looked away.
“I was scared.””
“So was I.””
The silence between them was heavy.
Then Adrian nodded.
“You’re right.””
It was the first time Clara had seen him accept blame without trying to explain it away.
Maybe the truth was finally changing him.
Maybe.
A sudden sound came from downstairs.
A crash.
Both of them froze.
Adrian immediately moved toward the door.
“Stay here.””
Clara almost laughed.
After everything, he was still trying to protect everyone alone.
“I’m coming with you.””
They walked downstairs together.
The kitchen light was on.
The back door was open.
Cold air moved through the room.
Adrian checked the lock.
“It’s broken.””
Clara looked around.
“Someone was here.””
Then she saw it.
A small piece of paper on the counter.
Her stomach tightened.
Another message.
Adrian picked it up.
This time, his hands shook.
“What does it say?”” Clara asked.
He unfolded it.
His expression changed.
“It’s not a threat.””
“What is it?””
He handed it to her.
It was a list.
Names.
Dates.
Locations.
And at the bottom:
*Project Emma.*
Clara looked up.
“Project?””
Evelyn appeared behind them.
She saw the paper.
And all the color drained from her face.
“Where did you find this?””
Adrian looked at her.
“You know what it is.””
Evelyn didn’t answer.
“Evelyn.””
She closed her eyes.
“I was hoping I was wrong.””
Clara stared.
“About what?””
Evelyn took the paper.
“About why Vanessa needed Emma.””
The words felt impossible.
“She needed Emma?””
Evelyn nodded slowly.
“Vanessa didn’t marry you because she loved you.””
Adrian looked like he already knew.
“She married me because of my money.””
“That was part of it.””
“Then what was the rest?””
Evelyn looked at the list.
“She needed access.””
“To what?””
Evelyn looked at him.
“To your family.””
Nobody spoke.
The sentence sounded insane.
Until Clara remembered something.
The investigator.
The recordings.
The secrets.
Vanessa had been watching everyone.
Not just Clara.
Everyone.
“What is Project Emma?”” Clara asked.
Evelyn hesitated.
Then she said:
“A plan.””
“For what?””
“To create a perfect family.””
Adrian frowned.
“That makes no sense.””
“It will.””
Evelyn pointed at the names.
“Vanessa wasn’t working alone.””
Clara felt a chill.
“Who else?””
Evelyn looked toward the hallway.
Toward the bedroom where Vanessa was supposed to be.
“She had help.””
They found Vanessa gone ten minutes later.
Her bedroom was empty.
The closet was open.
A suitcase missing.
Adrian stood in the doorway, stunned.
“She left.””
Clara looked around.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
“She didn’t leave.””
Adrian frowned.
“How do you know?””
“Because she wanted us to think she left.””
Clara walked toward the dresser.
Vanessa was careful.
Always careful.
People like Vanessa didn’t run.
They controlled exits.
They created scenes.
On the dresser was a jewelry box.
Open.
Empty.
Too obvious.
Clara looked lower.
At the floor.
A small mark.
A scratch.
She moved the dresser slightly.
Behind it was a hidden compartment.
Adrian stared.
“What?””
Clara pulled it open.
Inside were several envelopes.
Documents.
A flash drive.
And a small old photograph.
She picked up the photograph.
Her breath caught.
It showed a younger Vanessa.
Standing beside Daniel Cross.
Holding a newborn baby.
The baby was wrapped in a pink blanket.
On the back of the photograph was a date.
The same date Emma was born.
Adrian took the photo from her.
His face collapsed.
Because he recognized something Clara didn’t.
A bracelet.
A tiny hospital bracelet around the baby’s wrist.
“What is it?”” Clara asked.
Adrian didn’t answer.
He looked at Evelyn.
“She knew.””
Evelyn whispered:
“Yes.””
“Knew what?””
Adrian’s voice was barely there.
“That Emma wasn’t the first child.””
The room went cold.
Clara stared.
“What?””
Evelyn looked at the documents inside the compartment.
“There was another baby.””
Adrian looked at her.
“Another baby?””
Evelyn nodded.
“A baby born before Emma.””
“Where is that child?””
Nobody answered.
Then the flash drive suddenly activated.
A small light blinked.
And a recording began playing.
Vanessa’s voice filled the kitchen.
Everyone froze.
The recording was not old.
It was recent.
“By the time you hear this, you’ll know too much.””
Adrian grabbed the flash drive.
Vanessa continued:
“I knew someone would eventually uncover the truth.””
A pause.
Then:
“But there is one thing you don’t know yet.””
The recording crackled.
And Vanessa said the words that made Clara’s blood run cold.
“Emma was never the child I came back for.””
The audio stopped.
Nobody moved.
Then a final sound came from the speaker.
A child’s voice.
A little girl.
May you like
Whispering:
“Mommy said I was supposed to replace Emma.””
