Chapter 5: The Child Nobody Knew About
For several seconds, nobody understood what they had just heard.
The words were simple.
Clear.
Impossible.
*Vanessa isn’t Emma’s mother.*
Adrian stared at Evelyn as if the woman had spoken another language.
“What did you say?””
Evelyn’s eyes moved to Emma.
The baby had stopped crying.
She was staring at the unfamiliar faces around her, holding her stuffed rabbit tightly in her tiny hands.
A child who had no idea that the adults around her were watching a family fall apart.
“I said Vanessa is not Emma’s biological mother,” Evelyn repeated.
Adrian shook his head.
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
Too automatically.
“No, that’s not possible.””
Evelyn looked at him sadly.
“You always did that.””
“Did what?””
“Believe the version of the story that hurt less.””
The sentence hit harder than Clara expected.
Because she knew what it meant.
Adrian wasn’t just denying a fact.
He was protecting the life he thought he had.
The family.
The memories.
The years.
Vanessa.
Clara looked at Adrian.
“Is there any chance she could be wrong?””
Nobody answered.
That silence was enough.
Adrian slowly walked toward the crib.
“Emma was born nine months after Vanessa and I got married.””
Evelyn nodded.
“Yes.””
“She was pregnant.””
“Yes.””
“Then explain.””
Evelyn took a deep breath.
“She was pregnant when she married you.””
Adrian froze.
The room became painfully quiet.
“With whose child?”” he whispered.
Evelyn didn’t answer immediately.
She didn’t need to.
The look on her face already said enough.
Adrian stepped back.
“No.””
Clara watched his reaction.
Not anger.
Not yet.
Just disbelief.
A person trying to hold onto something that was already breaking apart.
“Who?”” Adrian asked again.
Evelyn looked toward the door.
“Not here.””
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“You come into my house. You tell me my wife lied about my daughter. And now you won’t tell me?””
“I’m trying to protect Emma.””
“From who?””
Evelyn looked at him.
“From the same person who switched that bottle.””
The room went silent.
Clara felt her stomach tighten.
Because everything connected.
The bottle.
The lie.
The investigator.
The secret.
Vanessa wasn’t simply trying to remove Clara.
She was trying to hide something about Emma.
But what?
Twenty minutes later, they gathered in Adrian’s office.
It was the one room in the house Vanessa never entered without permission.
Clara had always thought that was strange.
Now it felt important.
Adrian stood behind his desk.
Evelyn sat across from him.
Olivia stayed beside Clara.
Nobody wanted the little girl involved.
But nobody wanted to send her away either.
Not after what Vanessa had done.
“Start from the beginning,” Adrian said.
Evelyn looked down at her hands.
“I left because I discovered something about Vanessa.””
Adrian frowned.
“When?””
“Before Emma was born.””
Clara watched his face carefully.
Every new piece of information seemed to hurt him.
“You knew Vanessa before I married her?””
Evelyn nodded.
“We met through a charity organization.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“You never told me.””
“Because I didn’t trust her.””
“Why?””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Because she lied.””
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“That’s a little late to say now.””
Evelyn accepted the anger.
“You’re right.””
“What happened?””
Evelyn leaned forward.
“Vanessa told me she was pregnant. She told me the baby’s father was someone who abandoned her.””
Clara listened carefully.
“But that wasn’t true?””
“No.””
“Who was the father?””
Evelyn looked toward the window.
“A man named Daniel Cross.””
The name meant nothing to Clara.
But Adrian reacted.
His face changed.
“You know him?””
Adrian slowly sat down.
“Daniel was my business partner.””
The room went still.
Clara looked between them.
“Your business partner?””
Adrian nodded.
“Years ago.””
“What happened to him?””
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“He disappeared.””
Evelyn spoke quietly.
“He didn’t disappear.””
Everyone looked at her.
“He was killed.””
Olivia gasped softly.
Clara immediately placed a hand on her shoulder.
Adrian stared.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying Vanessa was connected to Daniel’s death.””
“No.””
This time, Adrian’s voice was louder.
“You can’t just say something like that.””
“I’m not saying it without evidence.””
Evelyn reached into her bag.
She pulled out a folder.
And placed it on the desk.
Clara watched Adrian open it.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Reports.
Messages.
Evidence collected over years.
Vanessa’s name appeared again and again.
Adrian’s hands trembled slightly.
“Where did you get this?””
“I spent years trying to prove it.””
“Why didn’t you come to me?””
Evelyn looked away.
“Because Vanessa convinced you I was unstable.””
Adrian went quiet.
Clara remembered.
Seven years ago.
The story everyone knew.
Evelyn Hale had disappeared after suffering a breakdown.
That was what people said.
But now Clara wondered.
Who had started that story?
Adrian looked through the documents.
Then stopped.
His eyes locked on one page.
“What is this?””
Evelyn didn’t answer.
Adrian lifted the paper.
A DNA report.
Clara saw the words from across the room.
A paternity test.
Her heart began beating faster.
“No,” Adrian whispered.
He looked at Evelyn.
“You had this?””
“Yes.””
“And you knew?””
“Yes.””
His voice cracked.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because when I tried, Vanessa threatened me.””
The room became silent.
“What did she threaten you with?”” Clara asked.
Evelyn looked at her.
“Your family.””
Clara frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Evelyn looked at Olivia.
The little girl immediately became uncomfortable.
Clara understood.
There were still pieces missing.
Pieces involving the children.
“What did Vanessa do?”” Adrian asked.
Evelyn took a breath.
“She knew about my past. She knew things that could ruin me.””
“That’s why you left?””
“Yes.””
“You let everyone believe you were dead?””
Evelyn nodded.
“Because Vanessa made sure nobody would believe me.””
Adrian covered his face.
The man who always seemed in control looked completely lost.
Then his eyes moved to Emma’s baby monitor.
A tiny screen showing his daughter sleeping peacefully.
“What does this have to do with Emma?””
Evelyn became serious.
“Everything.””
She pointed at the DNA report.
“Emma’s father is Daniel Cross.””
Adrian looked like he had been hit.
“But Daniel is dead.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did Vanessa marry me?””
Evelyn’s answer was quiet.
“Because she needed someone to raise a child who wasn’t yours.””
Clara felt a wave of anger.
Not just because of the betrayal.
Because Emma was innocent.
That little girl had been used as a piece in someone else’s plan.
Adrian stood suddenly.
“I need to talk to Vanessa.””
Evelyn grabbed his arm.
“No.””
He looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because she knows I’m here.””
“What?””
“She knew I came back.””
Clara’s eyes widened.
“How?””
Evelyn looked toward the office door.
“Because someone told her.””
Nobody moved.
Then Olivia spoke.
“Dad…”
Everyone turned.
The little girl was staring at the hallway.
“There was someone outside.””
Adrian frowned.
“When?””
“Before we came in here.””
Clara felt uneasy.
“Who?””
Olivia pointed toward the door.
“I don’t know.””
A shadow moved beneath the gap.
Someone was standing outside.
Listening.
Adrian walked toward the door.
Slowly.
Carefully.
He opened it.
Nobody was there.
Only a small envelope on the floor.
No name.
No address.
Just a handwritten message on the front.
Adrian picked it up.
His face changed as soon as he read it.
“What does it say?”” Clara asked.
He didn’t answer.
“Adrian?””
Slowly, he handed the envelope to her.
Inside was a single photograph.
A photograph of Emma.
Taken while she slept.
On the back, someone had written:
*You should have left the past buried.*
Clara looked up.
Because there was something else.
A second line.
May you like
A warning.
*The next person who tells the truth won’t get another chance.*
