Chapter 3: The Man Who Was Paid to Watch

Adrian stared at the name glowing on his phone screen.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The dining room felt frozen.

The kind of silence that came right before something broke.

Vanessa looked at the phone.

Then she looked away.

Too quickly.

Clara noticed.

She had learned something during the years she spent caring for children.

Adults often believed their faces hid the truth.

They didn’t.

A baby couldn’t explain fear.

But a baby’s body could.

And adults were no different.

The smallest reactions revealed the biggest secrets.

“Who is calling?”” Adrian asked.

His voice was quiet.

But everyone heard the suspicion in it.

Vanessa forced a small smile.

“Adrian, I think you’re overreacting.””

He didn’t answer.

The phone continued ringing.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then Adrian pressed the answer button.

“Hello?””

Nobody could hear the person on the other end.

But they could see Adrian’s expression change.

His shoulders stiffened.

His eyes moved toward Vanessa.

“What?””

A pause.

“No, that doesn’t make sense.””

Another pause.

Then:

“You’re sure?””

Vanessa stood.

“Adrian.””

He raised one hand.

A silent request for her to stop.

Clara watched Vanessa carefully.

The woman who had spent the entire morning pretending to be innocent suddenly looked nervous.

Not because someone accused her.

Because someone knew something.

Finally, Adrian ended the call.

Nobody spoke.

Then Olivia whispered:

“Dad?””

Adrian looked at his daughter.

“Go upstairs.””

Olivia frowned.

“But—”

“Please.””

The sadness in his voice made her obey.

She picked up her tablet and walked away.

Clara watched until Olivia disappeared up the stairs.

Then Adrian turned back.

“The man who called was Marcus Reed.””

Vanessa’s face lost color.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Clara saw it.

“Who is Marcus?”” she asked.

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

“That’s what I want to know.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“He’s someone I hired.””

The room became silent again.

Clara’s eyes narrowed.

“You hired a private investigator?””

Vanessa looked irritated.

“I was worried about my daughter.””

“No,” Adrian said.

Everyone turned toward him.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“You hired someone to investigate Clara.””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

That was enough.

The truth had already answered.

Clara felt something heavy settle in her chest.

She had suspected Vanessa disliked her.

But hiring someone?

Watching her?

Collecting information?

That was different.

“That’s insane,” Adrian said.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Don’t make this sound worse than it is.””

“You secretly hired someone to watch a woman who takes care of our child?””

“I hired someone because I didn’t know her.””

Clara almost laughed.

Almost.

Because for two years she had been there.

Every morning.

Every night.

Every emergency.

And Vanessa was saying she didn’t know her.

“I trusted you with Emma,” Adrian said.

Vanessa’s eyes hardened.

“You trusted everyone except me.””

The sentence landed differently.

For a moment, Clara saw something real.

Not fear.

Not guilt.

Pain.

A wound.

Then it disappeared.

Vanessa looked back at Adrian.

“I’m her mother. I have a right to know who is around my daughter.””

Adrian rubbed his forehead.

“What did Marcus tell you?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That silence was louder than anything.

Clara stepped forward.

“What did he find?””

Vanessa looked at her.

And for the first time, there was hatred in her eyes.

Not hidden.

Not disguised.

Pure.

“You really want to know?””

Adrian immediately interrupted.

“Vanessa.””

But she ignored him.

“He found that Clara spends more time with Emma than anyone else in this house.””

Clara stared.

“That’s because you’re rarely home.””

The words came out before she could stop them.

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Adrian looked uncomfortable.

Because it was true.

Vanessa was often gone.

Meetings.

Events.

Trips.

Appointments.

Clara had never judged her.

She knew some parents struggled.

But now she wondered if Vanessa had always seen Clara as a replacement.

“He found that Emma reaches for Clara first,” Vanessa continued.

Her voice became bitter.

“He found that she calls Clara when she’s upset.””

Clara felt her heart ache.

Because she understood.

This wasn’t really about the bottle.

It never was.

This was about jealousy.

But jealousy didn’t explain everything.

It didn’t explain switching bottles.

It didn’t explain the lie.

“And what else?”” Adrian asked.

Vanessa looked away.

“That’s all.””

Clara knew she was lying.

But before she could say anything, Adrian’s phone buzzed again.

A message.

From Marcus.

Adrian looked down.

Then his face changed.

“What does it say?”” Vanessa asked.

He didn’t answer.

Clara saw his hand tighten around the phone.

“Adrian?””

Slowly, he turned the screen toward them.

There was a photo.

A screenshot.

From a security camera.

A timestamp.

Yesterday afternoon.

The kitchen.

Clara standing near the counter.

Vanessa entering behind her.

And below the image was a message:

*I found the footage you asked me to delete. I kept a copy because I thought you might need it later.*

Nobody breathed.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Give me that phone.””

Adrian pulled it back.

“No.””

The word was simple.

But it changed the entire room.

Vanessa stared at him.

“Adrian.””

“What footage did you ask him to delete?””

“I didn’t.””

“You just admitted you hired him.””

“That doesn’t mean—”

“Answer me.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked like she had nowhere to go.

Clara watched as the perfect story began collapsing.

Not because someone accused Vanessa.

Because Vanessa had built a lie with too many pieces.

And lies were fragile.

One missing piece could destroy everything.

“Play the footage,” Clara said.

Everyone looked at her.

Adrian hesitated.

Then he opened the file.

The video loaded.

The kitchen appeared.

The same kitchen.

The same afternoon.

But this angle was different.

Higher.

Clearer.

Clara saw herself preparing Emma’s bottle.

She saw herself leave.

Then Vanessa walked in.

The room went quiet.

Vanessa looked away.

Adrian watched the screen.

No one spoke.

Vanessa approached the bottle.

She picked it up.

She looked around.

Then she switched it.

Exactly as Olivia said.

Adrian’s face changed.

“Vanessa…”

She immediately shook her head.

“No. You’re misunderstanding.””

The video continued.

Vanessa did something else.

Something Olivia’s recording hadn’t shown.

She took out her phone.

She typed a message.

The camera zoomed slightly.

The words became visible.

Clara leaned closer.

Adrian froze.

Because the message wasn’t to Marcus.

It wasn’t to a doctor.

It wasn’t to anyone trying to protect Emma.

It was sent to a contact saved under one name.

*Evelyn.*

The message said:

*It worked. Adrian finally sees her as the problem.*

The room went silent.

Completely silent.

Even Vanessa stopped pretending.

Adrian slowly lowered the phone.

“Who is Evelyn?””

Vanessa looked at him.

Her face had changed.

The fear was gone.

The performance was gone.

And Clara realized something.

The bottle incident was never the whole plan.

It was only the beginning.

Vanessa had not just wanted Clara gone.

She wanted something else.

Something bigger.

Something that involved a person nobody in the house had mentioned.

“Vanessa,” Adrian said again.

His voice cracked slightly.

“Who is Evelyn?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked toward the stairs.

Toward where Olivia had gone.

And Clara saw the fear return.

But this time, it wasn’t because they discovered the truth.

It was because Olivia might know more than they realized.

Then Adrian’s phone buzzed one more time.

A new message.

From Marcus.

Adrian opened it.

And this time, the color drained completely from his face.

Because beneath the message was another photo.

A photo taken three days earlier.

Inside Adrian’s own house.

And standing beside Vanessa was someone Clara recognized immediately.

Someone she never expected to see.

May you like

Someone who should have been impossible.

Because the person in the picture was supposed to be dead.
