Chapter 8: The Plan That Stole My Family
I couldn’t hear anything after those words.
Not the rain hitting the broken windows.
Not the distant sound of cars outside.
Not even my own breathing.
Only one sentence kept repeating in my mind.
*I’m Emma’s biological father.*
Daniel.
My brother.
My best friend.
The man who stood beside me when Rachel died.
The man who held my daughter and called her his niece.
He was the one.
I looked at him.
“Say it again.””
His face tightened.
“Richard…”
“Say it again.””
He lowered his eyes.
“I’m Emma’s biological father.””
My hands curled into fists.
I wanted to hit him.
I wanted to scream.
I wanted to erase every memory of the last three years.
But then I remembered Emma.
My daughter.
The little girl who called me Daddy.
The little girl who reached for my hand after falling from the staircase.
The little girl who believed I was the person who would always protect her.
And suddenly, anger wasn’t the strongest thing I felt.
Fear was.
“Does Emma know?””
Daniel looked at me.
“No.””
“Does she know you’re her father?””
“No.””
“Good.””
The word came out cold.
Everyone went silent.
Daniel looked hurt.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“I understand perfectly.””
“You don’t.””
“You lied to me.””
“Yes.””
“You lied to Rachel.””
His face changed.
“Yes.””
“You let me raise your daughter without telling me.””
A tear formed in his eyes.
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“And you still expect me to listen to your excuses?””
“No.””
His answer surprised me.
“I don’t expect forgiveness.””
For a moment, he looked like the brother I remembered.
The one who protected me.
The one who loved me.
Then I remembered the secrets.
The lies.
The missing years.
“What happened?””
Daniel looked at Victor.
Then at Clara.
Then back at me.
“Before I explain, you need to know something.””
“What?””
“Rachel didn’t hate me.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She was angry. She was hurt. But she understood.””
“Understood what?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Why Emma existed.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
He looked away.
“Rachel and I made a mistake.””
The words felt like a betrayal.
Not just of me.
Of Rachel.
“She cheated on me?””
“No.””
Daniel answered immediately.
“She never betrayed you.””
“Then explain.””
He took a breath.
“Before Emma was born, you and Rachel had been trying to have a child for years.””
I remembered.
The doctor visits.
The disappointment.
The nights Rachel cried when another month passed.
Daniel continued.
“The doctors told you there was a very low chance you could have children.””
My chest tightened.
I remembered that.
I remembered the doctor’s words.
But then Emma was born.
A miracle.
That was what everyone called her.
“A miracle.””
Daniel looked at me.
“That’s what you believed.””
I stared.
“What are you saying?””
He looked down.
“I was Rachel’s donor.””
The room went silent.
My mind struggled to process the words.
“What?””
“Richard…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Victor watched silently.
Clara looked away.
Daniel continued.
“Rachel didn’t want you to know because she was afraid it would destroy you.””
“And you?””
“I wanted to tell you.””
I laughed.
A broken laugh.
“When?””
“After Emma was born.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Because Victor found out.””
My eyes moved to Victor.
The man standing quietly in the corner.
The man who had controlled my family from the shadows.
“What did he have to do with it?””
Victor smiled faintly.
“Everything.””
I looked at him.
“Explain.””
Victor adjusted his coat.
“Your company was growing quickly. Daniel believed you were making decisions based on emotion rather than logic.””
My anger rose.
“So he wanted control.””
“No.””
Victor smiled.
“He wanted stability.””
I almost laughed.
“You destroyed my family for stability?””
Victor ignored the question.
“When Rachel discovered Daniel’s involvement with the company accounts, she threatened to expose everything.””
“What accounts?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Victor convinced me to move money.””
My eyes moved to him.
“Why?””
“Because the company was struggling.””
“You told me it was doing well.””
“It was.””
“Then why?””
Daniel looked at the ground.
“Because Victor created the problem.””
Silence.
I turned to Victor.
“You sabotaged my company?””
He smiled.
“I created opportunities.””
The way he said it made my skin crawl.
“You manipulated us.””
“Yes.””
No denial.
No shame.
Just honesty.
And somehow, that was worse.
“Rachel found out.””
Victor nodded.
“She discovered the financial records.””
“And she threatened you.””
“She threatened to go to the police.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What happened then?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“I tried to fix it.””
“You tried?””
“I went to talk to her.””
“The night she died.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
My heart sank.
“What happened?””
Daniel looked away.
“Rachel had already written the letter.””
“The one she left for me.””
“Yes.””
“And?””
“She told me she was going to tell you everything.””
“What did you do?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I begged her not to.””
“Why?””
“Because I was afraid.””
I stepped closer.
“Afraid of what?””
“That I would lose Emma.””
The anger returned.
“You mean lose control.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice broke.
“I loved her.””
I stared at him.
“You loved her so much you let me believe I was her father while you stayed in my life pretending nothing happened?””
He had no answer.
Because there was none.
Then Clara spoke.
“He wasn’t the only one who made mistakes.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“Rachel’s accident wasn’t an accident.””
The words froze everyone.
Daniel looked at Clara.
“What are you doing?””
“Richard deserves the truth.””
Victor’s expression hardened.
“Be careful.””
Clara ignored him.
“The night Rachel died, she left your house because she had proof.””
My heart pounded.
“Proof of what?””
“That Victor was planning to take control of your company.””
I looked at Victor.
“He wanted everything.””
Victor smiled.
“Everyone wants something.””
Clara continued.
“Rachel was going to meet someone.””
“Who?””
She looked at Daniel.
“Him.””
I stared.
“You?””
Daniel nodded.
“She wanted to give me one last chance to tell you.””
“What happened?””
Daniel’s face became pale.
“She never arrived.””
I frowned.
“But she died.””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“On the road.””
The old explanation.
The one I had believed.
But now it sounded different.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
Daniel looked at Victor.
And for the first time, Victor looked nervous.
That was when I knew.
The truth was bigger than even I imagined.
Daniel whispered:
“Rachel wasn’t driving alone.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“She was forced off the road.””
The warehouse became silent.
“Who was there?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
“Someone knows.””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Daniel’s eyes moved slowly toward Victor.
And Victor finally lost his calm expression.
“Daniel.””
But it was too late.
I saw it.
The fear.
The guilt.
The truth.
“You did it.””
Victor stepped back.
“Don’t be ridiculous.””
“You were there.””
“No.””
“You knew where she was going.””
Victor’s silence answered.
I turned to Daniel.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
His eyes filled with tears.
“Because Victor threatened Emma.””
The name made me freeze.
“What?””
“He said if I exposed him, he would destroy every chance I had of protecting her.””
I looked at Victor.
“You used my daughter.””
Victor’s face hardened.
“I used what mattered.””
The words made my stomach turn.
A sound came from outside.
Sirens.
Victor looked toward the broken window.
His expression changed.
“You called the police.””
Detective Harris stepped into the warehouse doorway.
“I did.””
Victor’s face darkened.
But before anyone could move, he pulled something from his coat.
Everyone froze.
Daniel stepped in front of me.
“Richard, get down!””
The next few seconds happened too quickly.
A loud crash.
A scream.
People moving.
And then darkness.
When I opened my eyes, I was on the floor.
The warehouse was empty.
Daniel was gone.
Victor was gone.
Only one thing remained.
A phone lying beside me.
The screen was open.
A new message.
From Daniel.
*Richard, I found the person who was really there the night Rachel died.*
I stared at the words.
Then another message appeared.
*It wasn’t Victor.*
My blood ran cold.
May you like
A third message arrived.
*It was someone you still trust.*
