Chapter 4: The Deal Behind My Marriage
For several seconds, I couldn’t move.
I just stood there, staring at the photograph on my phone.
Clara.
Daniel.
Together.
Years before I ever met her.
The two people I trusted most in the world were connected by a secret they had hidden from me.
My hands tightened around the phone.
“Start talking.””
Clara didn’t answer.
“Now.””
My voice echoed through the room.
She looked at me, and for the first time since I met her, she looked small.
Not powerful.
Not controlled.
Just afraid.
“Richard…”
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“I spent three years believing my wife died because of a random accident.””
My voice cracked.
“I spent three years raising Emma while thinking the worst thing that happened to me was losing Rachel.””
I held up the phone.
“And now I find out my brother knew my wife before she died, and my current wife was connected to him before she married me.””
I shook my head.
“Do you understand how insane that sounds?””
Clara swallowed.
“Yes.””
“Then explain.””
She looked toward the staircase.
Toward the place where Emma had fallen.
Then she whispered:
“Daniel hired me.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
I knew they were coming.
Some part of me already knew.
But hearing them made them real.
“What did he hire you to do?””
Clara closed her eyes.
“When I first met him, he told me he needed someone who could get close to you.””
My stomach twisted.
“Why?””
She hesitated.
“Because he believed you were hiding something.””
I stared at her.
“That’s impossible.””
“I know.””
“Daniel knows everything about me.””
“He thought you knew everything about him.””
The room went quiet.
I looked at the photograph again.
A younger Clara.
A younger Daniel.
Two strangers who had somehow built a plan around my life.
“What was the plan?””
Clara looked at me.
“I was supposed to learn about your finances.””
My chest tightened.
“My finances?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked down.
“Because Daniel believed Rachel had found evidence that could destroy him.””
I walked away from her.
My mind was racing.
Every memory.
Every conversation.
Every moment I had ignored.
Rachel’s questions.
Daniel’s sudden involvement in my company.
Clara appearing at exactly the right time.
None of it was random.
“How did you meet Rachel?””
Clara’s expression changed.
“I didn’t.””
I turned.
“What?””
“I mean… not the way you think.””
“Then what does that mean?””
She sat down slowly.
“I met Daniel first. He told me Rachel was suspicious of him. He said she was unstable after Emma was born.””
My jaw tightened.
“Rachel was never unstable.””
“I know that now.””
“You knew nothing about her.””
Clara looked hurt.
“No. I didn’t.””
A long silence followed.
Then she said something I didn’t expect.
“But Rachel knew about me.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She found out I was working with Daniel.””
I stared at her.
“When?””
“Three weeks before she died.””
The room felt colder.
“How?””
Clara looked at the floor.
“Because I confessed.””
I blinked.
“You confessed?””
“I couldn’t continue lying.””
She looked at me.
“I started the arrangement because Daniel offered me money. At the time, I didn’t know what he was planning. I thought he wanted information about your business.””
“And then?””
“Then I met Rachel.””
Her voice softened.
“And I realized Daniel had lied to me.””
I didn’t say anything.
“Rachel wasn’t paranoid. She wasn’t unstable. She was smart. She noticed things everyone else ignored.””
“What things?””
Clara looked at the fireplace.
“Daniel wasn’t just moving money.””
My heart sank.
“What was he doing?””
“He was building a way to take control of everything you owned.””
I laughed bitterly.
“No.””
“Richard—”
“No.””
I turned toward her.
“You’re telling me my brother spent years protecting me just so he could destroy me?””
Clara didn’t answer.
That silence was enough.
I walked to the window.
Outside, the garden was dark.
The same garden where Daniel and I used to play as children.
The same house where he promised me we would always look after each other.
“When Rachel found out,” I whispered, “what happened?””
Clara looked away.
“She wanted to tell you.””
“But she didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel knew she knew.””
I turned around.
“What does that mean?””
Clara’s eyes filled with tears.
“It means he was watching her.””
The words made my skin crawl.
“Watching her?””
“Yes.””
“How do you know?””
“Because I saw him.””
“When?””
“The night before Rachel died.””
My heart stopped.
“Where?””
“At your house.””
I stared at her.
“That’s impossible.””
“I know what I saw.””
“You’re saying Daniel was here?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Clara’s voice dropped.
“Because Rachel had proof.””
I felt dizzy.
“What proof?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“She never told me.””
I stepped forward.
“But you said you helped her.””
“I tried.””
Clara’s voice broke.
“I tried to warn her.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
She looked at me.
“Because Daniel threatened me.””
The room went silent.
“What did he threaten?””
She looked down.
“Everything.””
I waited.
“He told me if I went to you, he would make sure everyone believed I was a criminal. He had records showing I worked for him.””
I frowned.
“You were.””
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I was guilty of agreeing to spy on your family.””
She wiped her eyes.
“But I didn’t hurt Rachel.””
I wanted to believe her.
I hated that.
Because after everything, a part of me still wanted there to be an explanation.
“Then why marry me?””
The question came out before I could stop it.
Clara looked at me.
And the answer hurt more than I expected.
“Because I was trying to protect you.””
I shook my head.
“That makes no sense.””
“I know.””
“Then explain.””
She took a deep breath.
“After Rachel died, Daniel told me you would never discover the truth. He said you were too broken.””
My hands curled into fists.
“He said that?””
“Yes.””
“What else?””
“He told me you needed someone.””
A horrible feeling moved through me.
“Someone like you.””
Clara nodded.
“At first, I refused.””
“But you changed your mind.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with regret.
“Because I thought staying close to you was the only way to keep Daniel away from Emma.””
I stared at her.
“Keep him away?””
She nodded.
“Richard, Daniel wasn’t interested in your company.””
My heart pounded.
“Then what was he interested in?””
She looked directly at me.
“Your daughter.””
The words were barely a whisper.
My entire body went cold.
“Emma?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Clara didn’t answer.
And that scared me more than anything.
“Why would my brother care about Emma?””
She looked at the staircase.
“Because Rachel discovered something about Emma’s birth.””
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
Clara reached into her purse.
Slowly.
Carefully.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this because I didn’t know who to trust.””
I stared at it.
“What is it?””
“Something Rachel gave me the night before she died.””
My heart slammed against my chest.
“You had something from Rachel?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you show me?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of Daniel?””
She nodded.
I took the envelope.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
Inside was a single page.
Only a few sentences.
But the first line was enough to destroy everything I thought I knew.
*Richard, if anything happens to me, you need to know the truth about Emma’s father.*
I stopped.
My eyes moved over the words again.
Then again.
Emma’s father.
Not me.
Not the man who raised her.
Not the man who held her when she cried.
The paper slipped slightly in my hand.
Clara whispered:
“Richard…”
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Her face was full of fear.
“Rachel found out Daniel wasn’t just trying to steal your company.””
A cold silence filled the room.
“He was trying to take Emma away from you.””
I looked back at the letter.
The next sentence waited beneath my fingers.
A sentence I wasn’t ready to read.
May you like
Because it would reveal the one truth I had never questioned.
*The truth about who Emma really belonged to.*
