Chapter 5: The Truth Hidden In Emma’s Name

I couldn’t read the next sentence.

Not because I didn’t want to.

Because I was afraid.

There are moments in life when you already know the truth will hurt before you discover it.

When the door is already open, and you’re standing there deciding whether to walk through.

That was me.

Holding Rachel’s final letter.

Standing in the house where my daughter almost died.

Listening to my wife reveal secrets that had been buried for years.

I looked at Clara.

“Tell me.””

Her eyes filled with sadness.

“Richard…”

“Tell me what Rachel found.””

She looked at the letter in my hand.

“I don’t know everything.””

“But you know enough.””

She didn’t argue.

That frightened me more.

I unfolded the paper.

My eyes moved over Rachel’s handwriting.

Richard,

If you are reading this, then I failed to tell you the truth myself.

I’m sorry.

I wanted to protect you.

I wanted to protect Emma.

But I ran out of time.

I stopped reading for a moment.

My fingers pressed against the paper.

Rachel had known.

She had known something was coming.

Something bad.

I continued.

Emma is not the only thing Daniel wanted from us. He knows something about her birth that could destroy our family if it gets into the wrong hands.

I stared at those words.

Her birth.

The phrase felt strange.

Because Emma’s birth had always been one of the happiest days of my life.

I remembered holding her for the first time.

The tiny fingers wrapping around mine.

Rachel crying with joy.

Me promising both of them I would protect them forever.

I kept reading.

Richard, there is something you deserve to know.

But before I could finish the sentence, Clara spoke.

“Maybe you should sit down.””

I looked up.

“Why?””

“Because after this, nothing will be the same.””

I almost laughed.

“Clara, nothing has been the same since my daughter fell from that staircase.””

She lowered her eyes.

“You’re right.””

I looked back at the letter.

Then I saw the next line.

Emma’s biological father is—

The sentence ended there.

The ink stopped.

I turned the paper over.

Nothing.

The rest was missing.

“What happened?””

Clara looked away.

“Rachel never finished it.””

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe she just stopped writing?””

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

“I think someone interrupted her.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Daniel.””

Clara nodded.

I walked away from them.

The room suddenly felt too small.

My entire life was built on things I believed were true.

Rachel loved me.

Daniel loved me.

Emma was my daughter.

Clara betrayed me.

But now every piece had become uncertain.

I looked at the staircase.

At the place where my daughter had fallen.

“Did Rachel know?””

Clara looked confused.

“Know what?””

“That I wasn’t Emma’s biological father.””

The silence answered before she did.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“And she still let me raise her?””

Clara looked at me.

“Richard, you are her father.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

She stepped closer.

“Emma loves you.””

“But did Rachel?””

The question escaped before I could stop it.

Clara’s expression softened.

“More than anyone.””

I looked down.

Because that hurt.

Rachel trusted me enough to raise a child who wasn’t biologically mine.

But she wasn’t brave enough to tell me the truth.

Why?

My phone rang.

I looked at the screen.

Daniel.

For a moment, I considered ignoring it.

Then I answered.

“Richard.””

His voice sounded normal.

Too normal.

“Where are you?””

“At home.””

“Is Emma okay?””

The question made my jaw tighten.

“You already know she’s okay.””

A pause.

Small.

Almost invisible.

But I noticed.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you’ve been asking a lot of questions lately.””

Silence.

Then Daniel laughed softly.

“Your wife told you.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She finally told you.””

I looked at Clara.

She looked terrified.

“How did you know?””

Daniel sighed.

“Because Clara has always been terrible at lying when she feels guilty.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“You knew she was going to tell me?””

“I knew eventually she would.””

“Who are you, Daniel?””

The silence on the other end lasted longer than normal.

Then he said:

“I’m the person who has spent years cleaning up your mistakes.””

My heart pounded.

“What mistakes?””

“You really don’t know, do you?””

His voice changed.

Not angry.

Not sad.

Disappointed.

Like he was talking to someone who had failed him.

“Rachel told you lies.””

“Don’t talk about her.””

“Why? Because she’s dead?””

My blood ran cold.

“Be careful.””

“No, Richard. You need to be careful.””

I looked at Clara.

“What did you do to Rachel?””

Another silence.

Then Daniel answered:

“I didn’t kill her.””

The sentence made my entire body freeze.

Because I never said she was killed.

I only asked what he did.

“How did you know that was what I meant?””

Daniel didn’t respond.

And that was all the answer I needed.

I ended the call.

For a moment, I just stood there.

Clara whispered:

“He knows.””

I looked at her.

“Knows what?””

“That you’re searching.””

I grabbed my jacket.

“I need to see Emma.””

“Richard—”

“No.””

I stopped at the door.

“I need to hear the truth from my daughter.””

I returned to the hospital.

Emma was awake.

The moment she saw me, she smiled.

But the smile disappeared when she saw my face.

“Daddy?””

I sat beside her.

“I need to ask you something.””

She nodded.

“About Mommy?””

“Yes.””

Her fingers tightened around the blanket.

“She told me not to tell anyone.””

“Who?””

“Mommy.””

My heart sank.

“What did she tell you?””

Emma looked toward the window.

“She said if anything happened to her, I should give you something.””

My breathing stopped.

“What?””

She slowly reached into the drawer beside her bed.

And pulled out a small wooden box.

I stared at it.

“Where did you get that?””

“Mommy gave it to me before she died.””

My hands shook.

“Emma…”

“I was supposed to give it to you when I was older.””

“Why didn’t you?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because Clara found it.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

“She took it from my room.””

“When?””

“Before I fell.””

I felt anger rise inside me.

“What was inside?””

Emma looked down.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“She took the paper out.””

My heart stopped.

“Paper?””

Emma nodded.

“Mommy said it was important.””

I stared at the wooden box.

Another missing piece.

Another secret.

I opened it.

Inside was a small photograph.

A photograph of Rachel holding newborn Emma.

And beside them…

Daniel.

But not the Daniel I knew.

A younger Daniel.

Holding baby Emma.

With tears in his eyes.

On the back of the photograph was a message.

My hands trembled as I read it.

*Daniel, this is the last chance you have to tell Richard the truth. If you refuse, I will.*

I looked at Emma.

Then at the picture.

And suddenly, everything changed.

Daniel wasn’t just hiding something.

Rachel had given him a chance to confess.

A chance before she died.

A chance he never took.

My phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*“Ask your daughter who was there the night her mother died.””*

I stared at the screen.

Then slowly looked at Emma.

“Sweetheart…”

Her face became pale.

Because she knew exactly what the message meant.

“Daddy?””

My voice shook.

“Who was there that night?””

Emma looked terrified.

May you like

Then she whispered the name I never expected.

“Uncle Daniel.””
