Chapter 7: The Ghost From the Past
The old phone trembled in Nathan’s hand.
Not because of the device.
Because of the name displayed beneath the photograph.
Evelyn stared at the screen.
For several seconds, she couldn’t process what she was seeing.
The person in the picture.
The person standing beside Marcus Vale.
The person everyone believed was gone.
Was alive.
Nathan looked at his mother.
“No.””
His voice was barely a whisper.
“That can’t be possible.””
Evelyn took the phone from him.
She studied the image again.
The photograph was clear enough.
A man standing under the lights of a private parking area.
Older.
Thinner.
But unmistakable.
Her past had just walked back into her present.
“Your father,” Evelyn said quietly.
Nathan looked away.
“Yes.””
The name they had avoided for years.
The man who had disappeared.
The man who had left behind unanswered questions.
The man Nathan had spent his childhood trying to understand.
Thomas Carter.
Evelyn’s former husband.
Nathan’s father.
Twenty-eight years earlier, Thomas and Evelyn had started Carter Automotive together.
Before the crystal chandeliers.
Before the luxury brands.
Before the corporate towers.
There was a tiny dealership with cracked floors and a leaking roof.
They had no wealthy investors.
No famous name.
No powerful connections.
Just determination.
Thomas handled sales.
Evelyn handled operations.
Together, they built something from nothing.
At least, that was what Evelyn believed.
Until the night everything changed.
Thomas disappeared after a major company dispute.
He had wanted to take the business in a different direction.
More aggressive.
More risky.
Evelyn refused.
The next morning, he was gone.
No goodbye.
No explanation.
Only a letter.
A short message saying he needed to “start over.””
For years, everyone believed Thomas had left the country.
Some believed he had failed.
Others believed he had simply abandoned them.
Evelyn never spoke about him.
Not even with Nathan.
She told her son one thing.
“Your father made his choice.””
But she never told him how much that choice hurt.
Now he was standing in the middle of everything again.
“Why would he do this?”” Nathan asked.
Evelyn looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
That answer seemed to surprise him.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
She looked back at the photograph.
“I spent years thinking I understood him.””
A pause.
“Maybe I never did.””
Nathan sat down on the old chair near the desk.
His anger was mixed with something else.
Pain.
“I thought he was dead.””
“So did I.””
“Then why hide?””
Evelyn had no answer.
And that frightened her.
Because Evelyn Carter was a woman who solved problems.
She analyzed numbers.
She predicted markets.
She built an empire through decisions.
But this wasn’t a business problem.
This was a family wound that had never closed.
Nathan looked at the phone again.
“The message said he wants to show us something.””
Evelyn nodded.
“He wants us to follow him.””
“Or he wants to trap us.””
She looked at her son.
For the first time in a long time, they were thinking about the same thing.
Not against each other.
Together.
That realization felt strange.
Almost unfamiliar.
“Nathan.””
“Yes?””
“Did Marcus know your father was alive?””
Nathan shook his head.
“I don’t think so.””
“Why?””
“Because Marcus always acted like he was the one controlling everything.””
Evelyn looked at the photograph.
“Maybe he was never in control.””
The next morning, Robert arrived at the old dealership.
He walked inside carrying a laptop and several files.
“I checked everything.””
Evelyn looked up.
“And?””
Robert placed the laptop on the desk.
“The ownership investigation was created through an encrypted server.””
“Can you trace it?””
“Not easily.””
“But?””
Robert hesitated.
“But I found something.””
He opened a file.
A series of access records appeared.
“The person who uploaded the investigation documents accessed the system using an old executive account.””
Evelyn frowned.
“Old?””
“Yes.””
“How old?””
Robert looked at her.
“Twenty-eight years old.””
Silence.
Nathan exchanged a glance with Evelyn.
They both knew.
Robert continued.
“The account belonged to someone who was removed from the company records decades ago.””
“Thomas Carter,” Evelyn said.
Robert nodded.
“I thought you would know.””
Diana Brooks, who had been invited to the meeting, stood quietly near the wall.
After everything that happened, Evelyn had allowed her to remain involved.
Not because she trusted her completely.
Because she believed people should have a chance to prove who they really were.
Diana looked confused.
“But if Mr. Carter disappeared years ago…”
Robert nodded.
“That’s what makes this complicated.””
Evelyn looked at the records.
“Someone kept his access active.””
“Exactly.””
Nathan stood.
“So someone inside the company knew he was alive.””
Robert looked serious.
“Yes.””
The room became quiet.
Another possibility appeared.
A bigger one.
Thomas wasn’t just returning.
Someone had been preparing for his return.
That afternoon, Evelyn received a message.
No number.
No name.
Only coordinates.
Nathan looked over her shoulder.
“He wants us to come.””
Robert immediately shook his head.
“Absolutely not.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because this is exactly what he wants.””
“Maybe.””
Robert looked surprised.
“Maybe?””
“Yes.””
She picked up her coat.
“But if Thomas Carter has been hiding for twenty-eight years and suddenly appears when my company is under attack…”
She looked at the message.
“I want to know why.””
Nathan stood.
“I’m coming with you.””
Evelyn looked at him.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then she nodded.
“Okay.””
It was a small word.
But Nathan understood.
After everything that happened, his mother had finally allowed him back beside her.
Not as an executive.
Not as a successor.
As her son.
The location was an abandoned warehouse near the old harbor.
Rain fell heavily as Evelyn and Nathan arrived.
Robert stayed nearby with security.
They entered alone.
The warehouse smelled like rust and old wood.
Every step echoed.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
“I wondered how long it would take you to find the truth.””
Evelyn stopped.
A man stepped forward.
Older.
His hair was gray.
His face carried years of regret.
But his eyes were the same.
Thomas Carter.
Nathan froze.
“Dad.””
The word sounded strange.
Like something he hadn’t used in decades.
Thomas looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
Nathan laughed bitterly.
“Sorry?””
A long silence.
“You disappeared.””
“I know.””
“You left Mom.””
“I know.””
“You let me believe you were dead.””
Thomas lowered his head.
“I know.””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Why?””
Thomas looked at her.
And for the first time, she saw something she had never expected.
Fear.
“I wasn’t running from you.””
“Then what were you running from?””
Thomas looked around the warehouse.
“People who wanted what we built.””
Evelyn frowned.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“Yes.””
“After twenty-eight years?””
Thomas nodded.
“Because I spent twenty-eight years trying to stop them.””
Nathan stepped closer.
“Who?””
Thomas looked at both of them.
“The same person who is controlling Marcus.””
Evelyn crossed her arms.
“Then tell us.””
Thomas took a breath.
“Years ago, I discovered someone inside Carter Automotive was stealing from the company.””
Robert’s files suddenly made sense.
The investigation.
The documents.
The manipulation.
Thomas continued.
“I tried to expose them.””
“And?””
“They found out.””
A pause.
“And they threatened my family.””
Nathan’s expression changed.
“You left to protect us?””
Thomas looked at him.
“Yes.””
Nathan shook his head.
“No.””
“I know how it looks.””
“No.””
His voice became louder.
“You don’t get to disappear and call that protection.””
Thomas accepted the anger.
“I deserved that.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Who was it?””
Thomas became silent.
Too silent.
Then he said:
“The person behind everything was someone we trusted.””
“Who?””
Thomas looked at Evelyn.
His answer came quietly.
“Someone who was there when we built this company.””
The rain outside grew louder.
“Someone who knew every secret.””
Evelyn felt a cold feeling.
“Name.””
Thomas looked at her.
Then whispered:
“Your closest business partner.””
Evelyn froze.
“My partner?””
Thomas nodded.
“The person who helped you build Carter Automotive.””
Nathan looked confused.
“Mom never had another partner.””
Thomas stared at him.
“Yes, she did.””
A pause.
“Before you were born.””
Evelyn’s face changed.
Because suddenly, she remembered.
A name she had buried.
A name she had not spoken in decades.
A name that had disappeared from every company record.
Thomas continued.
“His name was Daniel Cross.””
Evelyn stepped back.
“No.””
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.””
Nathan looked between them.
“Who is Daniel Cross?””
Evelyn didn’t answer.
Because she remembered exactly.
The man who helped create the first dealership.
The man who knew every weakness in the company.
The man who vanished after a mysterious accident.
The man everyone thought was gone.
Thomas looked at them both.
“He never died.””
A pause.
“He’s been waiting.””
Evelyn stared.
“Waiting for what?””
Thomas’s expression darkened.
“For the moment when Carter Automotive would finally belong to him.””
Suddenly, the warehouse lights went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Then a voice echoed from the entrance.
A voice none of them expected.
“Well, Thomas…”
A slow clap filled the warehouse.
“You always did know how to ruin a surprise.””
The lights flickered back on.
A man stood at the doorway.
Older.
Confident.
Smiling.
And behind him stood Marcus Vale.
Evelyn’s heart stopped.
Because she recognized the face.
The man who had been erased from history.
The man who had returned from the shadows.
Daniel Cross looked directly at her.
“Hello, Evelyn.””
May you like
He smiled.
“It’s been a long time.””
