Chapter 6: The Son Who Knew Too Much

The words on the screen refused to make sense.

*Project Inheritance.*

*Architect: Nathan Carter.*

Evelyn stared at the document as if looking at it long enough could change the letters.

But they remained.

Her son’s name.

Her own child.

The person she had spent decades protecting.

The person she had believed was being framed.

Robert stood beside her, silent.

Claire looked down.

Nobody wanted to speak first.

Because sometimes silence was easier than accepting the truth.

Finally, Robert whispered.

“Mrs. Carter…”

Evelyn raised a hand.

“Don’t.””

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

Robert stopped.

Evelyn closed the document.

Then opened it again.

She searched for anything.

A mistake.

A false signature.

A copied file.

A trick.

Anything that could prove Nathan wasn’t involved.

But the deeper she looked, the worse it became.

There were emails.

Meeting notes.

Financial strategies.

A detailed timeline.

Someone had spent years preparing this.

And Nathan’s name appeared again and again.

Claire stepped closer.

“Evelyn…”

Evelyn looked at her.

“When did you find this?””

Claire swallowed.

“Yesterday.””

“Before or after the meeting with Marcus?””

“Before.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I wasn’t sure.””

Evelyn looked back at the screen.

“You had evidence my son might be behind an attack against my company, and you waited?””

Claire’s eyes filled with guilt.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“By hiding the truth?””

“No.””

Claire shook her head.

“By finding the whole truth.””

Evelyn said nothing.

She wanted to be angry.

At Claire.

At Marcus.

At Nathan.

But beneath all of that was something much harder to control.

Pain.

Because if Nathan really was responsible, this wasn’t a business betrayal.

It was a family betrayal.

Three hours later, Evelyn sat alone in her office.

The city lights reflected against the windows.

She remembered Nathan as a child.

A little boy running through the first dealership they ever owned.

A boy who used to sit in the driver’s seat of every new car and pretend he was making important decisions.

She remembered him saying:

“One day, Mom, I’ll build something even bigger than this.””

She smiled when she remembered it.

Not because it was funny.

Because she believed him.

She had believed in him before anyone else did.

When people said he was too young.

Too inexperienced.

Too emotional.

She defended him.

She gave him opportunities.

She brought him into the company.

And then, slowly, something changed.

Nathan stopped seeing the company as a dream.

He started seeing it as a machine.

Something that could always be expanded.

Something that could always make more money.

Their arguments became more frequent.

“You’re afraid of change,” Nathan had once told her.

“And you’re afraid of patience,” she had replied.

After that, Nathan left.

He said he needed to build his own path.

Evelyn thought time would heal things.

She never imagined he had been planning against her.

Her phone buzzed.

She looked down.

A message from Nathan.

*We need to talk.*

She stared at it.

Then another message arrived.

*You know now, don’t you?*

Evelyn froze.

Her fingers hovered over the screen.

How did he know?

She typed one sentence.

*Where are you?*

The reply came instantly.

*The place where you taught me everything.*

She knew exactly where he meant.

The first Carter Automotive dealership.

The one that started it all.

The old building sat on a quiet street outside the city.

It was no longer a functioning dealership.

Years ago, Evelyn had turned it into a private storage space for company history.

The place where everything began.

When she arrived, Nathan was already there.

He stood beside the old showroom window.

Older.

More serious.

But still unmistakably her son.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Nathan smiled sadly.

“You look angry.””

Evelyn stepped inside.

“I don’t know what I feel.””

“That’s worse.””

“Yes.””

Nathan nodded.

“I thought it would be.””

She looked at him.

“Did you create Project Inheritance?””

Nathan didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Evelyn’s eyes hardened.

“Answer me.””

“Yes.””

The single word hurt more than she expected.

The room seemed smaller.

“You planned this?””

Nathan looked away.

“I planned a transition.””

“A transition?””

“You were never going to step away.””

Evelyn stared.

“So you decided to force me?””

“No.””

“Then what would you call it?””

Nathan took a breath.

“Necessary.””

The word shocked her.

“Necessary?””

“Yes.””

He walked toward an old desk.

“This company is bigger than one person.””

“You mean bigger than me.””

“Yes.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“You didn’t want to protect the company.””

Nathan looked at her.

“I did.””

“You wanted control.””

Silence.

Nathan looked down.

And that was the answer.

“You always thought I wasn’t ready.””

Nathan’s voice changed.

Less like a businessman.

More like a hurt child.

“Do you know how many times people told me I only had opportunities because I was your son?””

Evelyn softened slightly.

“Nathan…”

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand more than you think.””

“Do you?””

He laughed quietly.

“When I suggested expanding internationally, you said I was moving too fast.””

“Because you were.””

“When I wanted to acquire competitors, you said we were becoming greedy.””

“Because you were.””

“And when I suggested replacing old management, you said I didn’t respect the people who built the company.””

“Because you didn’t.””

Nathan looked at her.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“You still think I’m a child.””

Evelyn stepped closer.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I think you’re someone who became so desperate to prove himself that you forgot what this company was built on.””

Nathan looked away.

“That sounds exactly like something you would say.””

“Because it’s true.””

His jaw tightened.

Then he pulled out his phone.

“Do you want to know the truth?””

“Yes.””

Nathan unlocked the screen.

“Marcus wasn’t supposed to be part of this.””

Evelyn frowned.

“What?””

“He was supposed to help with the transition.””

“Explain.””

Nathan hesitated.

Then he showed her a message thread.

Between him and Marcus.

The first message was dated three years earlier.

*We need patience. My mother cannot be pushed too quickly.*

Evelyn read it.

Her eyes moved faster.

Then another message.

*The company needs a younger leader. If she refuses, we move forward with the plan.*

Evelyn looked up.

“You.””

Nathan nodded.

“Yes.””

“But why the investigation?””

“I didn’t authorize that.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

Nathan looked hurt.

“I know how it looks.””

“Because it looks like you betrayed me.””

Nathan didn’t respond.

Because he knew she was right.

Evelyn continued reading.

More messages appeared.

Then she noticed something.

A conversation between Marcus and an unknown person.

The name was hidden.

But the messages were clear.

*She suspects Nathan. Good.*

*Keep them separated.*

*When the board sees the family conflict, they will remove both of them.*

Evelyn stopped.

Nathan saw it.

“That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you.””

She looked at him.

“Marcus changed the plan.””

“Yes.””

“He used you.””

Nathan’s face became serious.

“Yes.””

For the first time, Evelyn saw something she hadn’t expected.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Nathan wasn’t acting like a mastermind.

He was acting like someone who realized he had lost control.

“Who is he working with?””

Nathan looked at the floor.

“I don’t know.””

“You must know something.””

“I only know Marcus wasn’t the person in charge.””

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Then who is?””

Nathan hesitated.

And that hesitation frightened her.

“Tell me.””

Nathan looked at her.

“The person controlling Marcus…”

He swallowed.

“Is someone who has been inside this company longer than both of us.””

Evelyn felt a chill.

“Who?””

Nathan looked toward the old dealership.

Toward the walls filled with memories.

Then he said:

“The person who knows every weakness in this family.””

A sound interrupted them.

A phone ringing.

Nathan looked down.

It wasn’t his.

It wasn’t Evelyn’s.

It was coming from an old desk drawer.

Evelyn frowned.

“That phone hasn’t worked in years.””

Nathan slowly opened the drawer.

Inside was an old company phone.

The screen lit up.

One new message.

Nathan picked it up.

His face changed.

“What?””

Evelyn stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

Nathan turned the phone toward her.

The message contained only one sentence.

*You finally told her the truth. Now I’ll show her what you both still don’t know.*

Below it was an attachment.

A photograph.

Evelyn opened it.

And her entire body went cold.

Because the picture showed Marcus Vale meeting someone in secret.

Someone from her own family.

Someone she had not seen in years.

Someone who should have had no reason to return.

And beneath the image was a name.

A name that made Nathan whisper:

“That’s impossible.””

May you like

Because the person controlling everything…

was believed to be dead.
