Chapter 3: The Hidden Investigation
The email remained open on Evelyn Carter’s phone.
For the first time since she entered Imperial Motors that morning, her calm expression disappeared.
Not completely.
Most people would not have noticed.
But Robert Hayes had worked beside her for fifteen years.
He knew the smallest changes.
The slight tightening around her eyes.
The way her fingers stopped moving.
The quiet pause before she spoke.
Something was wrong.
“Who sent this?”” Evelyn asked.
Robert looked at the screen again.
“The legal department forwarded it from an internal address.””
“That wasn’t my question.””
Robert hesitated.
“No. It wasn’t.””
The entire showroom watched silently.
Diana Brooks stood several feet away, still trying to understand how quickly her entire world had changed.
Minutes ago, she thought she was dealing with an embarrassing customer situation.
Now she was standing in the middle of a corporate crisis.
A customer whispered to her husband.
“Should we leave?””
The man nodded.
But before they could walk away, Evelyn raised her voice slightly.
“Everyone may continue with their day.””
The employees looked uncertain.
Evelyn turned toward them.
“This is not a performance.””
Her eyes moved across the room.
“Go back to work.””
Slowly, people began moving again.
But nobody truly returned to normal.
Everyone knew something serious had happened.
Robert stepped closer to Evelyn.
“Should we discuss this privately?””
“Yes.””
She looked at Diana.
“And Diana.””
The manager froze.
“Yes, Mrs. Carter?””
“Stay.””
Diana’s face became pale.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Evelyn held her gaze.
“Because whatever happens next, I want everyone who was present today to understand one thing.””
She glanced at the Ferrari.
“Sometimes the smallest moments reveal the biggest problems.””
Diana lowered her eyes.
For once, she had no argument.
Inside the private executive office above the showroom, the atmosphere was completely different.
The luxury decorations that impressed customers downstairs disappeared behind closed doors.
Here, everything was simple.
A wooden desk.
A few chairs.
A wall covered with photographs from Carter Automotive Group’s history.
The first dealership.
The first employee.
The first car Evelyn ever sold.
Diana had seen those pictures before.
But she had never paid attention.
Now she did.
Because she finally understood whose story she had underestimated.
Evelyn sat at the desk while Robert placed the tablet in front of her.
“Tell me everything.””
Robert opened the investigation request.
“Three days ago, the legal department received a request to begin an internal ownership review.””
“From whom?””
“That’s the problem.””
Robert tapped the screen.
“The request was submitted using executive authorization.””
Evelyn frowned.
“Whose authorization?””
Robert looked uncomfortable.
“The system shows your name.””
Silence.
Diana looked up.
“What?””
Robert nodded.
“That’s why this is unusual. The request appears to have come from your office.””
Evelyn leaned back.
“I did not authorize this.””
“I know.””
“Then someone used my credentials.””
“Yes.””
The room became colder.
Diana slowly looked between them.
“Someone inside the company?””
Robert nodded.
“That’s what it appears.””
Evelyn looked at the documents.
“What exactly are they investigating?””
Robert scrolled.
“Ownership records. Financial transfers. Company acquisitions from the last five years.””
“Why?””
“They claim there may have been irregularities.””
Evelyn almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was impossible.
“I built this company from nothing.””
Her voice was quiet.
“I know.””
“I signed every acquisition personally.””
“I know.””
“Every major decision went through my office.””
Robert nodded.
“But someone wants people to believe otherwise.””
Evelyn stared out the window.
Below them, Imperial Motors continued operating.
Salespeople walked between vehicles.
Customers admired cars.
Everything looked normal.
But beneath the surface, something had changed.
Someone had challenged her.
And they had done it carefully.
Quietly.
From inside.
Diana finally spoke.
“Mrs. Carter?””
Evelyn turned.
“Yes?””
“Could this be connected to what happened today?””
Robert looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
Diana hesitated.
For the first time, she looked genuinely nervous.
“I mean… I was rude to her.””
Evelyn said nothing.
Diana continued.
“But whoever did this must have known you were coming here.””
Robert’s expression changed.
That was a possibility they had not considered.
Evelyn looked at him.
“Find out who knew about my visit.””
Robert immediately nodded.
“Only three people had access to your schedule.””
“Names.””
“Me. Your assistant, Claire. And…”
He stopped.
Evelyn noticed.
“And who?””
Robert looked away.
“The regional director.””
“Name.””
Robert took a breath.
“Marcus Vale.””
The name changed the atmosphere.
Diana recognized it.
Everyone in the company knew Marcus.
He was ambitious.
Extremely successful.
And extremely focused on becoming the next person in charge.
He had spent years climbing the company ladder.
Some employees admired him.
Others were careful around him.
Evelyn looked at Robert.
“Does Marcus have a reason to do this?””
Robert didn’t answer immediately.
That was answer enough.
“Robert.””
“He has been requesting more control over company decisions.””
“How much?””
“More than you were willing to give.””
Evelyn nodded slowly.
“So he creates a situation where my leadership becomes questioned.””
Robert looked serious.
“That’s one possibility.””
Diana looked confused.
“Are you saying he’s trying to take the company?””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody wanted to say it aloud.
But the thought was already there.
An hour later, Marcus Vale entered Imperial Motors.
He did not rush.
That was not his style.
Marcus believed panic was a sign of weakness.
He was a man in his early forties, always dressed perfectly, always speaking calmly.
When he walked into a room, people noticed.
Not because he demanded attention.
Because he expected it.
He approached the executive office.
“Robert.””
Robert looked up.
“Marcus.””
Marcus smiled.
“I heard there was an issue.””
Evelyn stood by the window.
“You heard quickly.””
Marcus glanced at her.
“News travels fast.””
“Especially when it concerns me?””
A brief pause.
Then Marcus smiled again.
“I’m not sure what you mean.””
Evelyn turned around.
“An ownership investigation was opened using my authorization.””
Marcus remained still.
“I heard.””
“Did you?””
“Yes.””
“And you don’t find that unusual?””
Marcus walked into the office.
“I find many things unusual these days.””
Evelyn watched him carefully.
“You knew I was visiting Imperial Motors today.””
“Yes.””
“Who told you?””
Marcus shrugged.
“Your schedule isn’t exactly a state secret.””
Robert stepped forward.
“Only three people had access.””
Marcus looked at him.
“And?””
“And you were one of them.””
A small smile appeared on Marcus’s face.
“Are you accusing me?””
“No,” Evelyn said.
“I’m asking questions.””
Marcus nodded.
“Good.””
He walked toward the desk.
“Because questions are important.””
Diana watched him carefully.
There was something different about Marcus.
Unlike her earlier confidence, his confidence felt controlled.
Calculated.
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
“I assume this investigation has you concerned.””
“No.””
That answer surprised him.
“No?””
“No.””
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Concern comes when you don’t know what is happening.””
She looked directly at him.
“I know exactly what is happening.””
For the first time, Marcus’s smile faded slightly.
“And what is that?””
“Someone inside my company is trying to weaken my position.””
The room went silent.
Marcus looked at Robert.
Then back at Evelyn.
“That’s a serious accusation.””
“It is.””
“Do you have proof?””
Evelyn didn’t answer.
Because she didn’t.
Not yet.
Marcus smiled again.
“Then perhaps we should allow the investigation to continue.””
Robert frowned.
“An investigation you may have helped create?””
Marcus looked offended.
“Robert.””
He shook his head.
“I expected more professionalism.””
Evelyn watched him.
Every word.
Every movement.
Every reaction.
Then Marcus placed a folder on the desk.
“I actually came here because I have something important to share.””
Evelyn looked at the folder.
“What is that?””
“Information.””
“About?””
Marcus opened it.
Inside were several printed documents.
Financial reports.
Ownership records.
And a signature.
Evelyn’s own signature.
Her expression changed.
Marcus noticed.
“Interesting, isn’t it?””
Robert stepped closer.
“What are those?””
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
“Documents that suggest someone has been hiding financial transfers from the board.””
Diana covered her mouth.
Evelyn stared at the papers.
She recognized the documents.
But something was wrong.
The numbers.
The dates.
The signatures.
They looked real.
Too real.
Marcus leaned forward.
“Mrs. Carter, I think you should know something.””
Evelyn slowly lifted her eyes.
“What?””
Marcus lowered his voice.
“The investigation was not started to remove you.””
A pause.
“It was started because someone believes you were betrayed by the person closest to you.””
Evelyn’s face remained calm.
But Robert looked shocked.
“Who?””
Marcus smiled.
Then he pointed at the papers.
“At the bottom of the last page.””
Evelyn looked down.
And there it was.
A signature.
A name.
A name she never expected to see connected to this.
May you like
Because it belonged to the one person she had trusted with everything.
Her own family.
