Chapter 6: The Night My Family Broke

I drove straight to Martha’s house.

Again.

It was becoming a pattern.

Every time I thought I had found the truth, another door opened.

Another secret waited.

She opened the door and looked at my face.

She knew.

“What did he tell you?””

I stepped inside.

“You knew.””

Martha closed her eyes.

“Daniel.””

“You knew Dad came back.””

“Yes.””

“You knew he contacted Sarah.””

“Yes.””

“And you knew Elena was involved.””

She looked away.

“I suspected.””

I laughed.

“You suspected?””

My voice cracked.

“You suspected while I destroyed my relationship with my son?””

She started crying.

“I was trying to fix things.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were trying to control things.””

She didn’t argue.

That hurt more.

“Tell me about the night Dad left.””

Martha froze.

“Why?””

“Because Richard says you weren’t the victim.””

Her face changed.

Not fear.

Pain.

“Your father didn’t leave.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

“He was forced out.””

I stared at her.

“By who?””

She looked at me.

“Me.””

I couldn’t speak.

“You made him leave?””

She nodded.

“Your father was not a good man.””

“Then why hide it?””

“Because you were twelve.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“Because the truth didn’t fit the story you wanted me to believe.””

Martha looked down.

“I wanted you to hate him.””

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid you would become him.””

I froze.

There it was.

The reason behind everything.

Fear.

My mother had spent my entire life fighting ghosts.

And she had turned me into a battlefield.

She finally told me everything.

Richard had cheated.

He had lied.

He had disappeared because he was ashamed.

But years later, he came back claiming he wanted redemption.

And Martha didn’t trust him.

So she buried him.

She erased every letter.

Every call.

Every attempt.

She controlled every piece of information.

Including Sarah.

Including me.

But then something happened.

Something she never expected.

Richard found Sarah.

And instead of giving up, Sarah fought back.

“She threatened to expose me,” Martha whispered.

“Who?””

“Sarah.””

I stared.

“She knew?””

Martha nodded.

“She found documents.””

“What documents?””

Martha looked terrified.

“Proof that I had been hiding information from you for years.””

My heart sank.

“So you worked with Elena.””

“I didn’t plan everything.””

“But you allowed it.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

That evening, I sat with Leo in the park.

He was running after pigeons while I watched.

A week ago, I had been standing at my wedding reception thinking I had finally built a perfect life.

Now I knew I had built it on missing pieces.

Leo came back holding a small flower.

“For Mom.””

I smiled.

“You picked it for her?””

He nodded.

“She likes flowers.””

I looked at him.

“Leo?””

“Yeah?””

“I’m going to make sure nobody keeps us apart again.””

He looked at me carefully.

“Promise?””

I swallowed.

Because promises had failed him before.

But this one mattered.

“I promise.””

He nodded.

Then he smiled.

A real smile.

The first one I had seen in years.

That night, I received an email.

No subject.

No message.

Only one attachment.

A video file.

The sender was unknown.

I opened it.

The screen showed a security camera recording.

A date appeared.

Two years earlier.

The night Sarah left.

My heart started racing.

I watched.

And there she was.

Sarah.

Standing outside my mother’s house.

Holding Leo.

Crying.

Then another person walked into the frame.

Someone I recognized immediately.

Elena.

My breath stopped.

Elena approached Sarah.

They spoke.

Sarah looked shocked.

Then Elena handed her an envelope.

Sarah opened it.

And her face changed.

The video ended.

A single sentence appeared below the file.

*You still don’t know the worst part.*

I stared at the screen.

Because I finally understood.

My mother wasn’t the only person who destroyed my family.

Someone else had been there that night.

May you like

Someone I married.

*And now I needed to know what Elena put inside that envelope.* :::
