Chapter 3: The Night Everything Changed
I drove to the coffee shop where Claire agreed to meet me before sunrise.
The city was still waking up.
People walked past carrying cups of coffee, never knowing that my entire world had collapsed inside a quiet corner booth.
Claire looked nervous.
She kept checking the window.
When she saw me, she stood.
“Daniel.””
I recognized her immediately.
She had been my mother’s assistant for nearly ten years.
She was the person who always answered the phone at Martha’s office.
The person who mailed documents.
The person who knew my family better than I realized.
“Tell me what happened.””
She sat down slowly.
“Your mother told me never to contact you.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew I knew.””
“Knew what?””
Claire looked at me.
“The truth about Sarah leaving.””
My hands tightened around the coffee cup.
“Sarah didn’t leave.””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
She took a breath.
“She was forced out.””
The words felt impossible.
“By who?””
Claire didn’t answer immediately.
She pulled an envelope from her bag.
I recognized the handwriting instantly.
Sarah.
“This was the last letter she wrote.””
I opened it.
Daniel,
I came to your mother’s house tonight because I needed to talk to you. I wanted to tell you I was pregnant again.
I stopped.
Again?
My eyes moved faster.
But your mother met me at the door. She told me you had chosen your career over us. She told me you said you regretted marrying me.
I felt my chest tighten.
That wasn’t true.
None of it.
I never said those things.
The letter continued.
She told me if I loved Leo, I would stop fighting. She said you would never believe me because she had already shown you proof.
Proof.
I looked up.
“What proof?””
Claire’s face went pale.
“She showed you fake messages.””
I stopped.
“What?””
“Messages pretending Sarah was asking for money.””
My heart dropped.
“She created them?””
Claire nodded.
“I saw her do it.””
The coffee shop noise disappeared.
All I could hear was my own breathing.
“She destroyed my family.””
Claire looked down.
“She thought she was saving you.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“She saved herself.””
I found Martha at home.
She was sitting in the same chair where she had watched me open the box.
But this time, she didn’t look afraid.
She looked tired.
“You talked to Claire.””
I stared at her.
“You knew she would tell me eventually?””
“No.””
“Then why didn’t you destroy the evidence?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because part of me hoped you’d find out.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I heard.
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because I knew I was wrong.””
The anger inside me burned.
“Knowing you were wrong doesn’t undo what you did.””
“I know.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You don’t know.””
My voice broke.
“You stole two years from my son.””
She cried silently.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
“Of losing you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You didn’t lose me.””
I looked toward the hallway.
“You made sure I lost everyone else.””
That afternoon, I went back to Sarah.
This time, Leo was there.
When he saw me, he didn’t run.
He didn’t smile.
He just watched me carefully.
Like he wasn’t sure if I was staying.
I knelt down.
“Leo.””
He looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
He said nothing.
“I should have listened to you.””
His eyes moved to the floor.
“Grandma said you wouldn’t believe me.””
My heart broke.
“I should have.””
He looked up.
“Are you mad at me?””
The question shattered me.
“Mad?””
I shook my head.
“No, buddy.””
I pulled him into my arms.
“I’m proud of you.””
He hugged me tightly.
And for the first time in two years, I felt like I had my son back.
But when I looked past him, I saw Sarah standing in the doorway.
She wasn’t crying.
She was watching.
Waiting to see if this was real.
I walked toward her.
“I want to fix this.””
She nodded slowly.
“You can’t fix everything.””
“I know.””
“But?””
She looked at me.
“But you can start.””
My phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
From Elena.
I opened it.
One sentence.
May you like
And every bit of peace I had found disappeared.
*Daniel, you need to know what your mother did after Sarah disappeared. Because she wasn’t the only person who lied to you.*
